PSA: Missing decks on profile pages

TappedOut forum

Posted on May 31, 2016, 10:17 p.m. by enpc

Hi all,

Recently there have been a lot of threads about decks missing from profile pages. Yes, this is a thing and yes, this is deliberate.

The maximum number of decks you can now show on your profile is seven (source).

(EDIT: Some people have mentioned that they can display eight decks as opposed to seven. The thing to take away from this is that there is now a limit to the number of decks that you can display and the actual number is more of a side note.)

Don't worry, your decks aren't deleted. You can still access them through the folder icon in your toolbar menu or through the "decks" link on your user page.

If people have questions, please feel free to post them here rather than starting a new thread.

Thank you.

How do we change what decks are shown on our profiles?

May 31, 2016 10:44 p.m.

Thank you for featuring this!

Click on the Person icon at the top right of your screen. Under "Settings," there is an area to change which decks are displayed on your profile.

Can I unarchive decks ?

June 1, 2016 12:32 a.m.

Yes. Go to the deck and uncheck the archive option under that deck's settings.

You mean 8, not 7? Mine shows 8 decks?

June 1, 2016 11:23 a.m.

enpc says... #7

Just going by YeaGO's comment. The point is that it's now a fixed number.

I don't mind this change, makes sense but sheesh the notifications tab is horrendous now. Takes forever to load, sometimes it doesn't even load. Tends to notify you when you post in a thread as well which is kinda pointless and misleading. Can we go back to the old one?

This wouldn't bother me so much if I could arrange them in the order of my choosing... and it would be great if you could make it simple, like a drag and drop list or even if you could just show all the decks I have in an editable list and I can use an up/down arrow next to them to move them around.

Also, can you make it so I don't have to go into the deck edit to show a deck on my profile? Maybe in the same place I can select the order, I can put a check in a box to have them show in the profile?

June 1, 2016 2:30 p.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #10

Fairly sure there is an option to arrange decks in the order you want in edit settings.

Yes, I'd really like to be able to choose the order they appear in.

I tried ordering my 8 profile decks on the settings page but it had no effect - they still appear on my profile in the order I added them to T/O.

what about just deck-cycle order?

June 1, 2016 4:02 p.m.

I find it interesting that even with such few decks on a profile, users still want to be able to order them in their own way. Guess some people have their things. (This was an observation, not a criticism).

Regulus1010 says... #14

yeaGO - just so you know, with these changes, any deck marked as "private" cannot be seen on a person's profile. Even after changing the decks that are viewable in my profile under "settings," I was unable to view them until I made my private decks public.

June 1, 2016 4:58 p.m.

yeaGO says... #15

You can mark them as private and access them either through the folder icon up top, or the All Decks link on your profile. The ones on your profile aren't really for reference, they're to show off to people visiting.

Go to your deck, on the left hand side there is a button that says Edit (sorry, wording mix up). It is the fifth down, the first under the blue buttons.

In that menu there is a check box that says "Archive." It is the fourth check box down from the top, after the Name/Format/Share fields.

archive button

June 1, 2016 7:20 p.m.

On the left hand side of the deck Edit menu, there is:

  • Name
  • Format
  • Hubs
  • Share List
  • Appears on Profile
  • Needs Help
  • Is Private
  • Is Archived
  • Is Prototype
  • etc
June 1, 2016 7:28 p.m.

magicfanzzz says... #23

I don't have that button.

June 1, 2016 7:46 p.m.

How did you archive your deck originally? Are you using the term Archive loosely?

June 1, 2016 7:55 p.m.

magicfanzzz says... #25

I archived it through the mass update option

June 1, 2016 8:02 p.m.

Where are you finding the deck currently? Do you see all of the other boxes I listed?

June 1, 2016 8:39 p.m.

magicfanzzz says... #27

I see my decks by deck folders and all decks but not in my showcase. On the list I see everything except archived and shared list.

June 1, 2016 8:42 p.m.

Ok. Archived decks won't show up on your user page.

yeaGO: Are Archive and Sharing members features? I ddin't think Sharing was.

Forkbeard says... #29

I really like the idea of deck-cycle ordering. As in, when you deck-cycle, the freshly cycled deck appears at the top of your profile page deck list, bumping the others down/off the list of 8.

Idea! Your most recently cycled deck becomes a showcased 'featured deck' on your profile page, similar to the top of site deck ad. Gives a vanilla profile page a little flourish and may encourage further site activity. Shrug.

June 2, 2016 6:51 p.m.

Romer says... #30

Oooh, yes! I like Forkbeard's suggestion of deck-cycle ordering. It means a user's most "active" decks become the ones featured on their profile.

June 2, 2016 7:09 p.m.

Harbynger says... #31

I would prefer being able to select the order myself, because doing deck cycle order would mean I would have to cycle my decks in a specific order to list them how I want. I just want to be able to number my decks 1-8 so they show up the way I want at any time I want to change them.

I do really like the idea of having your most recently cycled deck showing like a featured deck on your own page though, that would be great!

mine is showing 8...

June 6, 2016 6:42 p.m.

enpc says... #33

CheeseBro: sever is the number that YeaGO listed on the link. But regardless of the number, the point is now that there is a limit and you can't have as many as you would like (unless you'd only like 7 or 8).

I agree that we should be able to order our decks the way we want. I like looking at users profile pages if I know they list their new decks there, just to see what they're working on. I take old decks off my profile and just leave the new decks listed. Now I don't have room for newer decks.

Perhaps the profile page could be reorganised a little? It doesn't have to be anything fancy, but just a bit more ability to arrange things. I usually visit profiles of people at my LGS to check out their decks lists when we're talking about them. I find that, like myself, they often have 1-4 of their favourite decks from formats like Modern, Highlander or Commander permanently 'pinned' to the page, because they're always playing and talking about those decks. And then the rest of the decks are their current decks they are brewing, standard decks, or whatever.

I don't really understand the need to limit the decks that are shown on the profile, I'd rather that the page could auto-load more decks if the user scrolled down, or something (if it's an issue with server load having to access and parse in a bunch of deck data).

But yeah the ability to order the display of decks is something I've always wanted. I want to leave my commander decks at the top since people in my play group look at them if we're playing, and have my other stuff below that - don't want to have to cycle things on the site just to re-arrange them!

June 12, 2016 12:54 a.m.

Is it possible to display however many for the user, and everyone only sees the first 8? And then we get to choose which are the 8?

June 12, 2016 1:03 a.m.

yeaGO says... #38

That makes me think that people are using their profile as a reference dashboard and they're kinda two different things but I guess that could be done

June 12, 2016 1:33 a.m.

enpc says... #39

It seems like a lot of the resistance to having a deck limit is that people don't really know about the menu system or not liking to use it.

Maybe it might be worth looking at making the menu system provide more features depending on what users want to do. But it also seems like education on a) the fact that it exists and b) on how to use it might be another thing worth looking into. I know that the second "user education" comes up though that it's a point of contention.

June 12, 2016 2:57 a.m.

Now that it's mentioned, there has been a lot of resistance towards using the Folder Icon > Decks menu but near zero explanation as to why. Could this just be poor adaptation to a change?

June 12, 2016 11:33 a.m.

somsoc says... #41

I do use it like a dashboard for editing recent decks, even if that isn't the intended purpose. I have my decks in folders so I could load up a folder page but I just find that is not as easy. But mostly for linking people to my profile, so they can see the most recent x decks.

I don't honestly know of any way to find users recent decks if they're not showing on their profile page. Perhaps their most recent edited/added decks should show on their profile separate to this list of 8 decks? (unless they make them private of course). That's basically why I visit people's profile, to see what they're working on.

June 12, 2016 5:49 p.m. Edited.

enpc says... #42

When you go to a user's profile and click "all decks" it gives you a list of every deck that user has (not private ones) which I believe shows up in order of most recently created/modified.

If people are linking decks though, they should just send an actual deck link. Multiple times I've had people post "check out my so-and-so deck" with no link. So then you go to their profile page, only to find that they have 30 decks displayed. And just like that I've lost interest. And I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in that boat.

June 12, 2016 5:58 p.m.

This is my opinion, so feel free to disagree or point out flaws in my logic:

I find it hard to confidently say that someone is putting a lot of time into more than a handful (5-10, let's say) of decks at any given time. Hell, I max out at 3-4. That's what I see the profile for - quick access (in addition to the Folder Icon > Decks menu) to what I've been recently working on, and a way to showcase my most time consuming projects.

If I go to another user's page intending to browse decks, I'll use that as a guide to see what formats they play, how competitive they are, and their preferred style and to see if it matches what I'm interested in. It's not always that easy, but I'd say that you can usually get a feel from those handful of decks. Should I be interested in seeing more, the Deck Folders or Decks pages are easily linked above. But again, if I'm looking for the most recently worked on projects, I assume that they are on the user page itself.

I believe I accidentally archived the decks that I would want to show on my profile. How would I unarchive these decks so they can show up on my profile?

I think the way I archived it in the first place was by going into all decks from my profile and selecting archive from the pulldown menu. I tried to unarchive it by repeating the same steps, but it likely just archived it again.

June 13, 2016 11:01 a.m.

yeaGO says... #45

You can filter for archived decks on the all decks page

June 13, 2016 11:10 a.m.

finallegend says... #46

yeaGO, when I attempt to filter for archived decks it has a blank result when I filter for archived-true and archived-false. The format filter also shows blank results for all of my choices. Oddly enough, both of my decks that I have so far show up for both private-true and private-false.

So as of right now, I have only two decks that show up at all in my 'all decks' section (as it should), and zero on my profile itself. I also cannot cross reference these decks in my inventory (to show that their singles are in a deck).

EchoSi3rra says... #47

yeaGO, is there any chance of reverting this or increasing the limit?

I used my profile for easy access to the 14 or so decks I actually have built in paper. I know this isn't the intended purpose of the profile page and there are other ways to access your decks but I am a chronic deckbuilder and I have hundreds of decks in various stages of completion so having easy access to my current set of decks was very convenient.

In the interest of useful feedback I'm going to try and explain why this was my preferred method of accessing my decks. I don't like using the Folder icon > decks because it is sorted by recently edited which means I have to use ctrl+F to find the deck I want. I do have my decks sorted into folders but I don't like using that because I rarely need to see all my decks at once, just the ones I have currently built. Because of this I used my profile as a reference dashboard like you said and also because the decks I access most were also the ones I wanted to show off. Not to mention it simply takes less clicks to get to your profile.

Long story short, I don't like the change and I have found myself using this site less frequently lately because of it, which is why it took me so long to write this response.

June 23, 2016 12:38 p.m.

somsoc says... #48

@ EchoSi3rra I use(d) the profile page as you do, but to be honest it's probably just easier to bookmark your decks and put them in a folder on your browser toolbar. I guess not a lot of people have bookmark folders on their toolbar but it's incredibly handy once you get used to doing it.

But I agree that the profile page is probably used as much by the user themselves as other people, so it would be good to enable that.

Ideally users could pick what decks they wanted to show on their profile.. on the profile itself, by ticking some boxes, and then they'd show up there in a grid layout or something. Make it a tab and show it in front of the comment wall. Or go one further and let users pick whether decks or comment wall tab loads first.. whatever.

Don't really see a need to constrain the number of decks if people don't want to limit them. Just add left and right arrows to scroll the content, or auto load more decks when scrolling, if absolutely needed,

June 23, 2016 12:52 p.m. Edited.

yeaGO says... #49

a lot of people had profile pages with 20+ decks that were locking down the system.

i think based on feedback something will be changing, I am just in the process of deciding what :) don't worry, we'll get there.

June 23, 2016 1:09 p.m.

enpc says... #50

EchoSi3rra: So why don't you put an accordion in you description and stick links to the current decks you're working on there?

What might be good would be to have a pinned decks option for the folder menu. That way you could pin certain decks that you're working for quick access.

I just don't think upping the count is the right fix. Honestly, seeing a profile page with 15+ decks on it is one of the fastest ways for me to lose interest. And I know I'm not alone there. So while you're trying to showcase your decks, you actually end up doing the opposite. Just some food for thought.
