"Playtest against" feature idea

I'm obviously far from being the only user who play tests his decks against others in multiple tabs.

Now, I believe that if there existed a feature that made this visible, there'd be an additional source of feedback for decklings. Sort of like:

"I play tested your UW control deck against mine, mine being Burn, and I won 2-1 because you got mana draught two times in a row. Think of adding couple more lands!"

And, you know, comments more intelligent and insightful than this one.

It'd also help us progress faster, as we share the testing workload other decklings.

You could add a "playtest this deck against one of your own" tab.

Sounds cool?

I'm not really sure why such a system would need to be automated. Isn't it sufficient to conduct the playtest and post a comment with relevant information?

Or are you just suggesting that we promote the option of playtesting one of your decks against one of someone else's?

We could give it actual feature form, in order to promote the practice and stimulate the exchange of impressions among decklings. It would help differentiate T/O from other deck sites by providing actual experiences from potentially savvy players, who could in turn earn recognition for insightful advice.

What is being encouraged with this tab is to provide deck help through evidence in having playtested that deck. This kind of evidence and help is actually the most viable as it shows that the player took time with the deck. However, it can also demonstrate that the player may not have understood your deck.

Basically, having a feature that encourages people to playtest decks before they post feedback on a deck and to utilize the playtester to properly analyze decks.

In fact, just like you said, this tab would enable decklings to better differentiate between uninteresting visitors (read comments) and interesting ones. Those who playtest and understand write interesting stuff, and vice versa.

We'd be rising the bar.

Plus, they get a taste of the deck's flavor, that's specially interesting for those of us who care for that.

I don't think a tab is the best of methods to use to encourage this however. There's a large portion of the people here on T/O who don't know what most of the buttons do, and don't want to press them for fear of something happening. There is however, a plethora of methods we could use to encourage this.

  • Have a button right by the "Preview your comment" button that says "playtest this deck".
  • Have a "# of times playtested" counter on the deck page.
  • Have a "# of users who've playtested" counter on the deck page.
  • Have a "# of other's decks playtested" counter on the user page.
  • Grant some points (helper rank most likely) to the user for the first time they playtest someone else's deck.
  • Have a button on the playtest page that says, "leave feedback on this deck" that brings you back to the deck page straight to the comment section.

Other methods are certainly out there, I just haven't thought of them yet.
