TappedOut forum

Hi there

I am new to this site and new to magic in general but really like the idea of deck building and as no one i knows plays (I play mtgo) I am looking for help and advise in my newb decks...

I hope this is the site for that.

Anyway. I am in the middle of posting my 1st effort... and I was wondering what "EDH General" box is in the deck creation page? Do I just leave that blank? I googled and found a custom format call "Dragon Highlander" - http://www.dragonhighlander.net/rules.php is that what this option is for?

Anyway.. Hi and this site looks cool.. if way old school looking forum :)

Chat soon

also what is the acquired board?

August 18, 2010 3:22 p.m.

EDH stands for "Elder Dragon Highlander" so it's the same thing as what you found on Google. It's apparently a ton of fun to play, although I have not played it myself. It's played with 100 card singleton decks. Each deck though you have to choose a "general" a creature that is kind of the basis for the deck. You can only cast spells that are the same colors as the casting cost of your general, that's what the option is for in the deck creation page.

yup, that's the EDH website. if you're not making an EDH deck you can just leave it alone. the forums are kinda mashed-together, but they work fine.

the acquireboard is for cards that you don't own and want to put in the deck but are working towards acquiring - $100 dollar bills for your UW control, for example.

so, if you are "building a deck" and it is not yet finished I should use prototype instead of newb? To get best beginner feedback?

Also is there a area to add "cards being considered" ?

no, prototype is for unfinished (not up to 60 cards) decks. newb will prolly get you more comments.

that's the maybeboard.

Just curious on peoples opinion Magma Jet. As far as two mana instants go I think its one of the better options, 2 damage combined with the two scry can really save you from getting too much or too little mana or any other draw issues. Is there a better two mana instant option avliable?

I think it is amazing. The Scry on it has saved my ass many times from drawing dead cards. In this format, 2 damage isnt a lot of damage, but it is still a very powerful option.

It's not THAT powerful of a card but it's definitely a very good card in standard. Smooths out your draws while still putting pressure on your opponent and helps to close out games.

Honestly, it really depends on what you want it to do. As far as straight up burn goes, Lightning Strike is better, BUT the ability to set up your next turn or two with Scry makes up for its minor lack more often than it doesn't.

Let's be honest, Magma Jet certainly isn't a bad card, but it looks a lot better right now because of the lack of decent 2 mana removal. The 2 damage is enough to trade with some threats and mana dorks, and the scry helps to offset when you need to 2-for-1 something bigger.

Its good as long as you understand its bad in this meta full of corseir of kruphix and sylvan caryatid , the two best things you will get with it are rabblemaster and maybe an elvish mystic. Agaist other weenie or heroic decks you might get something but wont slow them down. I loved magma jet in RTR block with Red Devotion and rode that horse till it died. So don't write this off even if you like the card, because I am a magma jet fan and would jam it if it were decent removal + scry. Problem is nobody is running a 1 ,2 or 3 drop worth running this card ,except rabblemaster. If it can just be a lit match to the face scry 2 in your deck then play it.

Really depends how fast you want to go through your deck. I personally find Searing Blood to be more useful

1 mana for 2 damage is fine for standard. 1 mana to scry 2 is pretty poor.

The power level on this card is average to good, but definitely not high.

In my RW Burn deck, Magma jet is one of the all stars. It takes out Elvish Mystics and Rattleclaw Mystics for days, and in other matchups, it just helps me find the other win conditions that I need.

It's a very good card right now, mostly because it's the best option for things that want what it offers. However, it isn't good enough to be splashed for or put into a shell that doesn't regularly need it.

Magma Jet is good or bad depending on what you're trying to accomlish and what else is available. Some other cards that rival Magma Jet include Searing Blood, Magma Spray, and Lightning Strike.

Searing Blood has the same mana cost and deals the same damage TO A CREATURE and gives a bonus if you kill it, the overall damage is higher but it requires you to kill a creature to get the full use

Magma Spray is great for killing small stuff that your opponent can constantly bring back AKA Bloodsoaked Champion, if black is giving you trouble with that guy then just burn him and exile him, once again this card lacks the ability to target a player which might be what you want to do so that's the downside, other than that it's only one mana!

Lightning Strike is pretty basic damage that can go anywhere, no cool effects, just straight burn, the extra damage over Magma Spray is cool, but it's a pretty vanilla burn spell

Magma Spray is good in my opinion because of the versatility, you place 2 damage for 2 mana wherever you want AND you get to scry 2! The double scry is so much better than two single scrys because you get to look deeper and at the same time. Card cycling and advantage is huge! So if you get to set up your next two turns potentially, then this card is rock solid

TL;DR Magma Spray is good because you target what you want and get to scry 2 all at a decent mana cost

November 17, 2014 12:48 a.m.

It's good in fnm and against jeskai decks, boss sligh, monob aggro, abzan aggro, and heroic decks as well as all the random fnm deck techs and budget decks with mana dorks that aren't Sylvan Caryatid.

It's bad against abzan midrange, sidisi whip, temur decks not running many 2 toughness creatures (maybe just Heir of the Wilds or just Rattleclaw Mystic), and mardu control decks.

Basically it's good if your opponent has 2 toughness or less targets to kill and bad otherwise. And it tends to be worse vs expensive decks.

In the long run, scry 2 is like drawing .8 cards if your deck has all the lands it needs.

November 18, 2014 2:21 p.m.

eatyourbabes says... #24

obesechicken13 how do you figure its worth .8 cards?

November 19, 2014 9:52 a.m.

eatyourbabes says... #25

What I've collected from everyones' input is that Magma Jet is a pretty good card in a vacuum; however, in the current standard format, it does not provide a sufficient answer to the threats that are commonly provided by opponents so it falls short.

I like the card and I want to see it do well, but right now is not the time for that. Currently the best burn spell in the format is either Lightning Strike or Stoke the Flames because they just put out more damage for the same cost, if you include the convoke reduction.

Side note, Crater's Claws is also REALLY good in a green devotion deck that can just float massive mana.

November 19, 2014 10:25 a.m.

I figure about 40% of a deck is lands, so if you're at the point where you don't need any more lands and you just want to scry them away, scrying 2 lands away means that in 2 turns you'll have more chances to draw 2 spells. 40% chance * 2 = .8

My math may be flawed though since the next 2 cards aren't necessarily spells. You might have 4 lands in a row.

November 19, 2014 9:47 p.m.

It depends on what type of deck you are playing, for burn decks its a huge card, for midrange control decks its also good.I run 4 magma jet in my temur control, why ?

  1. Helps you defend early against creatures like, rabblemaster, seeker of the way, swiftmono spear, elvish, rattle, weenies.
  2. SCRY 2 at instant baby, do i have to say more? Yes? Okey
  3. You can combine it with other burn or damage spells to kill bigger threats- like, my temur control, you play chandra pyromaster, deal 1 damage with her on a creature with 3 toughfness , and finish it with magma jet on.Or by mixing it with hornet nest, opponent attacking, you wait then magma jet your own hornet nest, and voila, making 2 flying deatchtouch baddies. ;-)
