Moderators and Private Messages?

TappedOut forum

Posted on Aug. 23, 2015, 10:39 p.m. by DemonDragonJ

I have only recently joined this forum, so I wish to inquire about two very important features that I hope that this forum has.

I shall presume that this forum has moderators, as do most online forums, but how does one identify a moderator from a normal user?

Also, does this forum have a private messaging feature, in the case that a user wishes to say something to another user that they would prefer that the general public not see? Thank you very much.

Well hi!

We've got a couple of mods: one is the site creator yeaGO, Epochalyptik does a lot of the dirty work, VampireArmy moves threads (maybe he has other privs I'm not sure) and ChiefBell helps out too.

There is a private messaging feature. You have to go to the user's wall and click on "enable chat" and once they enable it back you'll be able to talk. You can also go into your settings and allow chat with everyone.

Welcome to tappedout, enjoy your stay.

No the moderators do not have any identifying marks. But what tibs said in the above post is correct.

Moderators are few and limited. This community is more self regulated than most, and the community itself will answer a lot of questions or handle some issues when they can.

A reason why we have few moderators here is because of the small community. Forums aren't used too heavily as with other sites because of all the other places we have for discussion.

Anyways, top moderators that a majority of the community knows are as follows:

  • yeaGO: He runs the site.
  • Epochalyptik: He maintains order in the site and solves numerous other issues like trading disputes and closes discussions when people don't know how to be civil.
  • ChiefBell: Does general maintenance.

There are numerous other users who can do "general maintenance" like moving a thread when it is posted in the wrong forum and what not, but I can't remember all those users. There are others who particularly run the articles section of this site, and some who try and manage the absolute gong-show that is the combase. And then there's me, who tries makes sure the card, token and alter database is up to date (when I have the time), even if I don't have any admin privs for that.

The mods are purposefully not segregated from normal users. Our philosophy here is that a mod is, first and foremost, a regular user. After that, he or she merely has extra privs that allow him or her to help with maintenance tasks.

It also helps to keep mods look like actual people with lives, and not trolled or hated on like in forums on other sites

It's a good thing too, as I probably wouldn't have my poster image of oh-so-fuckable-Epoch if he didn't occasionally share a bit of himself to the community ♥

Femme_FataleI don't even know what to do with this info... lol?

Hey Femme, I have Epoch on my Facebook :P

The mods here are amazing people who, essentially, work for peanuts. They put in hours and hours just to keep this community on track. Sometimes with not much success lol.

I'd just like to take a minute to thank all mods no matter how slight their job.

To OP. Welcome to T/O, while you are here remember:

Just one big happy, crazy, cool group of people interested in MTG XD

Ohthenoises, that image is probably the most true picture I have seen that is related to this site.

So true, and as FW says we are a group of people interested in MTG, just with a twist, as Fem Showed us earlier in this thread

Welcome to TappedOut! If you ever see a thread with me commenting on it, run the other way. Lol

I'm recovering from surgery so not as active as I used to be. Apologies.

Welcome to the site.

The reason that I am asking about moderators and private messages is that I may find myself in a situation where I wish to say something, but first wish to ask a moderator if that course of action is wise. On other forums of which I am a member, I ask a moderator privately if an idea I have for a new thread is wise, and if they advise me to not start such a thread, I do not.

Is there any person here whom I can speak to privately, if I ever have doubts about making a post or new thread?

August 30, 2015 8:46 p.m.

The site does have a private chat function. Just enable chat with one of the site admin and message them that way.

August 30, 2015 8:54 p.m.

I'll clarify now that I don't enable chat except for specific cases. If you have some general question, just post it on my wall.

ChiefBell says... #19

Yeah, myself or Epochalyptik will be good bets.

Edit: I'm free with my chat enabling. Don't mind who it is.

ChiefBell: thank you very much; if I ever need any advice, I shall definitely ask you, but I likely shall not be doing that at any time soon, since I do not wish to take any risks just yet, being a relatively new member of this forum.

August 30, 2015 9:42 p.m.

I really don't know what you consider "risky." This site isn't exactly anal about what users can do.

Though the user base can certainly be incredibly immature about topics that encroach upon morals or heavy material, so best to ask Chief or Epoch. If you need a third voice, I'm available too and will freely enable chat whenever possible, though recommended to discuss with the other two as I've frequently been unable to get a clear head these days.

DemonDragonJ says... #23

After I enable chat with a user, do I simply post a message on their profile, as I normally would, or is there some other way to send them a message?

August 31, 2015 9:14 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #24

Click the envelope in the top right corner, and click on "All Chats". Do be aware that they need to enable the chat from their end too.
