How do I create custom categories for my deck? I see the option on the edit page to default custom categories, but can't figure out how to create them. I want to break my deck down by ramp, card draw, removal, etc.

After the card name put a # and then the tag you want. Using an underscore _ makes a space between words in a tag. Like #Mana_Rocks #Removal etc. Cards can have multiple tags and its case sensitive too.

Rzepkanut you mean in the box where you enter the card and quantity?

Right in the deck list box. Like this:

4x Evolving wilds #Land

1x ravenous chupacabra #Dog_Fight

Coming from the #1 ranked helper on the whole site... don't, it makes it a pain in the ass to offer help. Just because your custom categories make sense to you doesn't mean it will to whoever is considering helping.

Well coming from somebody else who was the reigning number one helper on this site for a few months earlier in the year (me), I couldn't possibly disagree more with your opinion on using custom categories. It's the reason I like this website in general and specifically decklist that have them are easier for me to dissect and make worthwhile suggestions for.

Rzepkanut & Last_Laugh This is really more for my own purposes of constantly tweaking my decks. I actually agree when looking at someone elses' deck it's easier when broken down with normal categories.

Last Laugh Custom Categories(hereafter referred to as "CCs") are extremely helpful for looking at deck lists, in my humble #2 helper opinion.

The fact that CCs make sense to the builder and not you is the POINT. They allow a window into the mind of the deck builder, allowing you to quickly see the reasoning behind every card decision in the deck. This focuses suggestions, allowing you, the helper, to make better suggestions without stepping on their theme too much.

What CCs a builder uses can tell you EVERY thing you need to know about how experienced of a deck builder they are, what they care more about, and how they classify and plan to use particular cards when playing.

CCs are also a crucial part of the deckbuilding process itself, mainly making cuts. As a builder, being able to see how many of each thing you need is very helpful. Tthe builder can say, "oh, I have 10 board wipes and 3 card draw spells. I should switch that. I also have 45 gimmick cards, I should cut that too 25." In my opinion that is critical to becoming a better deck builder.

Finally, if you don't like CCs, you can group a deck however you like using the "Group" dropdown on every deck page. I generally go back and forth between CCs and card type, if available. Two clicks of the mouse. Hardly a "pain in the ass".

Sorry I got kinda long winded... felt this was important. I hope this helps you help others :)

Lol, ok all boils down to personal preference. I sort my own cards by function wbecausehen looking for cuts and they're paper lists but there are too many cards that fit in 2+ categories in a list online so I list my own decks by card type and prefer reading lists by card type (only a little overlap there). I typically end up suggesting something that's already in the list when categories are customized.

And sorry to throw the whole #1 rank nonsense out there lol... I am still kinda stoked as I got that rank recently and didn't think I'd actually get past #2.

Haha all good! Congrats! :)

Yeah, personal preference trumps all, however you prefer to help usually yields the best help. I just find CCs to be very helpful in conjunction with card type grouping. That produces my best help, which is what I always want to give. Cheers!
