Help Wanted: New Combo Database

TappedOut forum

Posted on Jan. 8, 2017, 1:39 p.m. by Epochalyptik

As some of you may be aware, we've experimented with a database that would automatically track and link card combos, such as Deadeye Navigator + Palinchron. In the past, we opened the system up to allow any user to tag a combination of cards using "card + card" syntax, but we quickly realized that people were tagging non-combos with regularity.

We've since tweaked the system. Now, you can propose a combo by going to a card page and clicking the green Suggest button under the "Combos" section. Proposed combos will be reviewed by mods before being approved for addition to the database. (EDIT: It appears that this feature is limited to upgraded users only for the time being. Other users can list notable missing combos in this thread if they'd like someone else to submit them in their stead.)

The "Add combo proposal" form has the following fields:

  1. Category: One of infinite, lock, or synergy.
    • Infinite should be used if the combo creates an infinite (or repeatable, self-sustaining) loop. For example, Palinchron + Deadeye Navigator is an infinite loop that produces infinite mana by allowing you to soulbond the two cards, bounce Palinchron using its new soulbond ability, untap seven lands with Palinchron's triggered ability, and tap those lands again for mana (using some of the mana to activate the bounce ability again).
    • Lock should be used if the combo creates a series of effects that prevent other players from doing anything. For example, Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir + Knowledge Pool is a combo lock that prevents other players from casting/resolving spells. When an opponent casts a spell, it's exiled by Knowledge Pool's second ability. The player is then instructed to cast another spell "from" the pool, but can't because Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir's ability prevents them from casting a spell at any time other than when they could cast a sorcery. Because Knowledge Pool's ability is still on the stack while it's resolving, no player can cast a sorcery, and players are therefore able to cast spells into Knowledge Pool, but not out of it.
    • Synergy should be used if the cards simply create additional advantage by working together, but don't form an infinite loop or lock. For example, Venser's Journal + Necropotence is a synergy. It doesn't lock anything up or allow you to "go infinite," but you're able to take as many cards as you like with Necropotence and provides life to fuel that ability.
  2. Hub: Ignore this for now.
  3. Description: Use this field to describe how the combo works (see my examples for the category field). Be sure to give a detailed, accurate description, especially if the combo isn't obvious.
  4. Cards: Use this field to list the cards involved in the combo. Separate card names using the "|" character (usually located on the "\" key).

Want to help?

So here's the call. We're looking for people to volunteer to add combos as they use the site. You don't need to try to list every combo yourself, but, if you see a combo that's missing, feel free to add as you see opportunities.

Rules:

  1. Focus on infinite combos and locks for now.
Having too many synergies and non-combos was part of the problem with the original combo database. For now, just focus on the more traditional combos. We'll experiment with synergies once we get the true combos moving.
Also, don't add joke combos like Storm Crow + Island. These proposals have to be reviewed and approved for a reason; we want the combo database to be valuable to everyone. Adding non-combos or joke combos just makes more work for the mods and doesn't end up helping anyone.
  2. Keep it to 3 cards max.
Although some combos exist that use more than 3 cards, they get very complicated and generally serve impractical/niche purposes. Stick to the 2- or 3-card combos for now.
  3. Add accurate combos.
Make sure that the combo is legal and that the cards you list do something together. If you're unsure about whether a combo works (as in, whether the rules allow it to work as you think), feel free to ask a question about it in the Rules Q&A..
  4. Focus on the core combo.
For things like infinite mana combos (using again the example Palinchron + Deadeye Navigator), we want the core combo, which is just Palinchron + Deadeye Navigator. We don't want a slew of things like P+DN+Fireball or P+DN+Exsanguinate because the win conditions in those cases are very numerous and interchangeable. Unless the win condition is actually part of the core combo, don't include it.
  5. Feel free to discuss different perspectives and changes to the system.
Again, we add/modify features based on what's useful to the community. If you see opportunities to improve on things, tell us below.

For this feature please add a way to edit or remove the combo proposals by the poster as sometimes it is necessary to make spelling corrections or remove false combos

One i'm using in my frontier deck although it is standard and modern legal is Greenbelt Rampager + Longtusk Cub + Paradox Engine then all you need are two non-land mana sources E.G Sol Ring + Elvish Mystic or even just two creatures and Cryptolith Rite. Infinite Mana and infinite counters on Longtusk Cub

If you want these combos to be considered click the card, go to its page and click the "suggest" button under the combos header. But first check if that combo is already listed through the "see combos" button.

I'm not sure if these are in the database yet but here are some of my favorites:

Helm of Obedience + Rest in Peace/Leyline of the Void = exile target player's library

Splinter + Liquimetal Coating/Myr Landshaper = exile all cards with the same name as target card from that player's library hand and graveyard (it doesn't have to be an artifact in zones other than the battlefield)

Maxpphire says... #7

Infinite: Helm of Obedience+Leyline of the Void Instantly Exile entire Decks, you can also do the same if you replace Leyline of the Void with Rest in Peace

Rashmi, Eternities Crafter + Jori En, Ruin Diver

It's a great commander pair for Temur players and I love it. With both of them out, you get major card advantage just by casting your first and second spell each turn. (goes under synergy)

February 3, 2017 3:07 p.m.

BattleDragon says... #9

Madcap Experiment + Platinum Emperion

Get an 8/8 Creature with "Your life total can't change" for 4 mana and just one card. (The only requirement is having no other Artifacts in your deck)

February 3, 2017 9:37 p.m.

TheRickDecks says... #10

Chaos Orb and Prototype Portal lets you hit your opponent with a pillow every turn, but i assume that's synergy...and impolite

February 4, 2017 9:17 a.m.

Naksu says... #11

BattleDragon I think Platinum Angel is better for the job, but it's probably just preference. Theres so many synergistic cards for Madcap, that I wouldn't wan't to start listing them separately :p

February 4, 2017 9:26 a.m.

BattleDragon says... #12

Naksu, the problem with Platinum Angel is when it dies, and is probably will, your left with a huge amount of life loss. With Platinum Emperion, no risk is ever taken once the spell resolves. Also, 8/8 Power vs 4/4 Power is a huge difference, allowing it to beat down much more effectively, not dying to other larger creatures, and evading cards like Dismember, Languish, Lightning Axe and many more.

Another 'one card combo' is Congregation at Dawn, which actually benefits from Glittering Wish the turn before, and Skill Borrower the turn after (eventually revealing Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker for the win)

similar combo works with Labratory Maniac+Puresight Merrow+Paradise Mantle = infinite self exile

Omnath, Locus of Rage+Elemental Mastery+Intruder Alarm = infinite haste tokens that die for infinitex3 damage, but the combo works similarly with any other token making engine.

I just want to let you know that this implementation is still way to slow to be useful. I just looked up Zada, Hedron Grinder. Instead, the combo page is just empty. I would be so happy if I was able to see all the things people have paired it up with.

Can't we have both?

Just a little update here, I'm not going to be accepting any submissions due to just how time consuming it is to edit submissions to make them acceptable, and that there's a new system in the works to account for numerous potential iterations of a combo under one file and description.

February 15, 2017 1:50 a.m.

crowbby says... #24

I haven't seen this combo around too often.

Living Death + Eternal Witness + Phyrexian Altar and four more creatures allows you to cast Living Death infinite times. If you add a creature like Gray Merchant of Asphodel or Kokusho, the Evening Star into the mix of sacrificees, you'll drain your opponent's life infinitely.

(My buddy Chris helped me come up with this for my Mimeoplasm EDH deck so shouts out to Chris)

Check essentialmagic.com for a combo database system that worked pretty well while it was active. The system is still there, but the users stopped posting on that site years ago. Still, it could inspire tappedout.net.

Smokestack + Sundial of the Infinite: add counter, pass the turn before second ability resolves - opponent sacs and has to draw, you don't. The win happens eventually because your opponent draws and you skip the draw.

Mycosynth Lattice + March of the Machines: makes all lands 0/0 creatures. Also Mycosynth Lattice + Null Rod disables all mana sources...total lockdown, need to build a deck that can actually profit from that, lol.

Helm of Obedience + Leyline of the Void or Rest in Peace

Mechanized Production + Tangle Wire or Sphere of Resistance

Humility + Moat to completely disable creature based actions (one of my favourites)

And again I would have loved to see what people have tagged together with Bazaar Trader... but the combo page is blank...

Seriously, why can't we have the old system back additionally? Wouldn't hurt anyone.

February 22, 2017 9:14 p.m.

yeaGO says... #34

well, the old one filled up pretty quickly with a lot of things that were kinda not that great. That said, anyone (upgraded) is free to submit them now, so...

February 22, 2017 10:42 p.m.

Atanar says... #35

So the solution of the problem of me not finding synergies other people found is me already knowing those and submitting them?

Let's face it, it's been 1 1/2 months and the submission rate is abysmal. And people are adding shitty combos like Helix Pinnacle+Palinchron (as if there weren't hundreds of cards that could win with infinite mana) anyway.

February 23, 2017 1:50 p.m.

yeaGO says... #36

Why do you think the old system was much better? It included a lot more junk, and plenty of things that weren't combos. What about the old system did you like?

February 23, 2017 2:02 p.m.

Atanar says... #37

Because it made deckbuilding so much easier on the sub-competitive level. Want to know what cards works well with some card you want to build around? Just click on this link, and there are some select possibilities.

Now I have to comb though endless janky edh-decklists to find cards that might fit.

And don't try to make "a lot more junk" sound like it made it unusable. That's not even remotely true. Even if half of them were wrong, it was still a hundred times more useful.

February 24, 2017 1:05 a.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #38

No Atanar, the problem was that it was impossible to manage on our end, and that it is something that I'm trying to formulize an idea for, hell this is just sort of a 0.2 version as it can still be better to make the back end more easier for those of us with only a few hours each day to attend to our databases, if that.

February 27, 2017 4:40 p.m.

yeaGO says... #39

Atanar are you just interested in browsing highly correlated cards to some card? That to me is a similar but different thing.

February 27, 2017 5:03 p.m.

Atanar says... #40

No, that's just what I have to resort to now, but it's not ideal. What I really want is when people specifically pointed out in their deck description that [This Card+That Card] does something.

Is there a way to edit some of the descriptions to these combos? Or will that just be absolute chaos?

I've stumbled across some that have had typo errors, simple descriptions, and ridiculously large fonts. It is more of a consistency/aesthetic question, but will that be an option?
