Foils and Foreigns and Altereds, Oh my!

For most of my decklists, I don't worry about representing which printing or if a card is foil or not, but I'm at a point now where I'm getting alters of cards, or foiling out key cards, etc.
I'd like to use TO's deck pricing tool to see what my decks are accurately valued at, but I don't know if other users find the annotations and foil stickers to be distracting when viewing a decklist. What are your thoughts? Is it worth the time to signify running a full art killing wave instead of the DTK printing, or is that distracting?

I don't find it distracting. I usually mark my foils/alternates as such unless I'm running a playset that's mixed between the two, because I also use the price guide to value my decks.

Personally, I'm always on the hunt for good EDH deck ideas. I spend more time on this site than probably anyone else besides the admins, and I know that when I'm looking at a deck I'm thinking about running, I like to see every little detail, including promos/foils/altered arts/whatever, because if I'm going to drop a hefty chunk of change on a deck, I want to make sure that I'm going about it 100 percent.

I typically find them distracting because I use deck lists only to read what's in the deck, not to check what versions of cards the player owns.

Yeago is currently considering putting in an altered artwork function. It will probably be one where you input the image url into the syntax of the card title, sort of like this:

3x Restoration Angelimagelink.jpg

And it will pop-up as an altered card. This also works REALLY well in bypassing the need to have a card in the database for spoiler seasons, as people can just input their own cards.

Finally, this is awesome for making custom sets, allowing people to draft custom sets here on T/O. Remember that community set project that was made many years ago? Well, we would be able to use it on the site!

That is just me advocating this though, don't know when or if it will be implemented.

I think what I will do is give you a separate Alters section to show off things, and then allow you to do *A* to auto-link them.

Okay, so like we each have an individual user's alter section in which we can upload our own images and it'll only apply to our decks and cubes? Perhaps even posts?

That's an awesome idea!

its not that i ignored previous requests for this, its just i don't always have a clear and simple vision for it that's ready to be worked on. stuffing the image into the card line always seemed freaky to me.

......now how to handle it if people have two alters of the same printing :P maybe alternate syntax that includes an id as well. asterisk A20492 asterisk

Why don't people just do it manually? There is nothing difficult with replacing the current popover(for any card) with a custom image.

I'm sure it's not hard Blind_Guardian but it's also not common knowledge. If you wanted to do up a tutorial and yeaGO could add it to the list o' tutorials, I'm sure that would make it a more accessible option.

well i think a repository of altered cards would be fun too. it would help binders and such as well. sure, it could be done with javascript hackery.... so could lots of things :P

yeaGO, why not look into how untap.in does it? Because I basically just suggested their method of functioning.

As for a repository of altered cards, I've got an entire collection of alters up and running. Oh, and don't forget, numerous different cards will have tonnes of alters. Specifically, EDH staples like to have alters.
