Deckcycling Idea

TappedOut forum

I was greatly amused by the whole jace,-the-jace-jacer deck saga, and it made me think- what if users could use their deckcycles on OTHER PLAYERS' decks? I think it could lead not only to viral hilarity, but perhaps greater consideration and examination for worthy decks.

maybe have it as an upgraded only thing

I do like it but I need a mechanism in place for restricting people from making puppet accounts.

Perhaps if I list who last deck-cycled a deck, it can easily be traced by looking at the profile (and looking for users with no decks or usernames like aaafbfbbc)

Maybe you could keep track of IP addresses, if that's legal. Possibly make it so one address can only deck-cycle for one account every deckcycle period, that way they can cycle other decks, but only within reason? Hope this helps.

I kinda like the idea of it being restricted to those who've upgraded their profile. It's another incentive to donate that way, and I think most people who would abuse things that way aren't going to want to spend money to do so.

Though having some sort of backup monitoring system would be a good idea...because there's a "THAT guy" or two in every crowd. =p

Hmm... fair enough. Upgrade only does solve the problem and in fact I do like the whole idea.

One complaint I have, though, is that I don't want to give users the impression that TappedOut is pay-to-play. I don't want a chaste of people to form who suck up a majority of the attention on the site.

Maybe upgraders can deckcycle other non-upgrader decks? Please bare with me in solving this, because its a slamming idea.

No, we understand. And I agree with (and appreciate) the desire to keep it from feeling like a rich kid's club. =p

I'm not certain I like that solution, though, because first off a lot of the really clever decks are liable to come from those who've donated (by no means all!); if they're interested in donating to an MtG site, they probably play or deckbuild a lot, and so they have more experience, etc.

Second off, it doesn't seem to solve the lopsided problem. In some ways it might feel worse...it's not only a power only upgraded accounts wield, but it's a power that only affects non-upgraded people.

Your idea might work well for a different goal. With the right spin, it'd be a method to encourage the probably-more-experienced donating users to help support newer players, by giving them a tool they can use to tangibly interact with decks made by (probably) newer players.

That's a good goal, but I think it's a different spirit than what KrazyCaley suggested, which is along the lines of "bump awesome decks that we find on here". That's less 'encouraging new players' and more...promoting social interaction, I guess.

It's less supportive, and more fun. jace,-the-jace-jacer does not need bumps to encourage the deckbuilder that he's doing well, it needs them because it's awesome and funny.

Of course...the two are similar actions, if not necessarily similar intents. I'm probably over-analyzing all this. =p

Heh. I apologize for the wall of text. I become even more verbose than normal when I'm tired. =p

No apology at all. We've simply churned up a lot of ideas and I want to make sure its all back in sync with the original spirit.

The puppet account thing is something I haven't considered, and it's a good point.

Still, so far on Tappedout we've been relatively free of the kind of user abuse that you might expect, and perhaps we can expect TO users to wield their power responsibly. I'd say just let anyone deckcycle in this way, unless it becomes a problem.

If it does, then I'm with Magnor. If IP-limiting is too complicated or difficult, just let only upgraded folks deckcycle other decks. I think that's hardly a huge feature that's being missed out on if you're not upgraded.

The core feature of this site is the best deckbuilder on the net and the community to help you with it. Access to that by all registered users is fine; little perks like the deckcycling thing aren't critical to the process. Again, though, I like more features for more people to the extent possible, so maybe try it out for everyone first? Plus then if you switch later, everyone will have gotten a taste of other-person-cycling to whet their appetites.

personally like the whole concept of being able to deck-cycle other decks. :) i dont like the whole udgraded vs. non-upgraded account aspect of it (just because i'm not upgraded xD) but it does seem necessary.

just a different way to approach it:

upgraded accounts: get their regular deck-cycles plus the ability to deck-cycle other (maybe only non-upgraded) decks without any drawbacks

while,

non-upgraded accounts: have to pick between deck-cycling one of their own decks or another deck.

just a thought.
