A question about deck viewabiliy.

TappedOut forum

Posted on July 21, 2014, 7:17 p.m. by RemarkableOaf

I'm just wondering how to get people to see my deck. I posted a standard deck a little while ago and so far the only views have been myself.

I'm not asking for a bunch of feedback or +1s, I just want people to SEE it.

Anything I'm doing wrong?

Have you been deckcycling?

It can be difficult. If traffic on the site is really high, there's a low chance your deck will get picked up. Try tagging your deck with multiple tags (although they should still represent your deck) so that when you deckcycle your deck appears under multiple deck hubs. This might sound like a cheesy pitch, but donate. Donating gives you more than 1 deckcycle per day. That can triple the opportunities for others to see your deck.

Another thing you can do that I didn't see in the article when I scanned it, is find decks like yours and make a comment on the deck. Either some small suggestion that you think would help or even just a compliment, and then link to your deck asking them to take a look at it. A lot of people will at least look at decks that are similar to their own to see what other people are doing with the same idea and maybe find an idea that they hadn't thought of. I know that I at least am more interested to look at decks with the same commander as one of my commander decks or the same archetype as one of my 60 card decks.

@Gidgetimer That's a good tip. However, I've seen too many comments that just say, "cool deck look at mine link" without even bothering to give a constructive comment, +1 or even use punctuation.

Make sure that you actually help people before you ask them to help you. That makes them more likely to want to do so in the first place. Posting in the deck help forum should also increase your chances of receiving helpful feedback.

Yeah I guess my upbringing is showing through, and I need to be specific about what I mean with "leave a suggestion or even just a compliment".

"Cool deck look at mine LINK" isn't a compliment it is a blatant plug of your deck in another's comment section. I'll go find a deck I commented on earlier and rewrite the comment multiple ways for what would be acceptable for trying to solicit views to your own deck, which I wasn't trying to do at the time (but will inevitably end up doing here, by virtue of an example).

OK the deck in question is Xenagod, Fatty Extraordinaire, some unacceptable ways to solicit views would be:

Some acceptable ways to solicit views:

  • Great deck, I love to see aggressive commander decks that just decimate the opponents' life total and don't give them the breathing room necessary to set up combos. Malignus is a great creature that I had never thought of putting into my deck. Please check it out and tell me if you see anything else I can improve Xenegos, God of "You're Swinging with a HOW BIG?"

  • I have both Primal Rage and Gruul War Plow in my Xenegos, God of "You're Swinging with a HOW BIG?" deck in addition to Nylea and the archetype. I feel they would be good additions to your deck as well, even though you have considerably more evasion than I do. I can only find one card that I would recommend taking out for one of them, and that is Swiftfoot Boots with an indestructible commander I feel that the boots are a little less good than they normally are.
I like your deck list a lot and I will probably be adding a few of the creatures you have into mine. Please check it out and tell me if you have any suggested improvements. (This is an edited version of my actual comment to add a link and a solicitation for a view)

  • I feel as if your creature count may be a little high for a commander deck. I agree that all of your creatures have great abilities, but this looks as if it is a little too all in on the creature front. There are a good number of synergies in the enchantment and artifact front that can help you be just as aggressive without loosing ALL of your work to Wrath of God . Check out my Xenegos, God of "You're Swinging with a HOW BIG?" for ideas.

Both sets of examples have a complimentary, neutral, and aggressive comment. But the second set all show that you took the time to look at their deck and understand it before commenting, and people will often return the gesture. Again the deck I looked at was Xenagod, Fatty Extraordinaire and everyone should check that deck out, not mine, even though mine got linked more.

Thanks to everyone! You guys were all really helpful!

I was already dropping comments on similar decks to mine, but i wouldn't promote my own because I wasn't sure if the site had any rules against that.

I'll be sure to try the rest of these things out as well!

No there are no rules against it, but try to stick closer to my second set of examples than the first. You want to make it clear that you looked at their handy work and appreciate their deck before you ask for them to take the time to look at yours. It may take a minute or two to leave a comment with some substance instead of 10 seconds to leave spam, but a comment with substance will give back way more than 12 times the results.

Plus if people start making good comments on decks similar to their own then eventually we will get to a point where looking at one deck will lead you TV Tropes style to a deck that you didn't even know you were interested in. (Feel free to blame me for the hours subsequently wasted on TV Tropes)

@Gidgetimer Quite possibly the best written recommendation on how to comment on a deck constructively I've seen in a long time. It seems a majority of comments are either a single barely legible sentence or a shameless plug for their own decks. I blame the Twitter. /shakes stick at kids on the lawn.

Thank you, I also shake my cane at all these kids on my lawn that can't string together a coherent sentence, and don't realize that the better they present themselves the more likely people are to help them. I would suggest a article series on how to communicate on the internet. However; I don't want to suggest a series for someone else to write, and unfortunately I haven't put the time into my profile page, nor the description on all the decks I have, to author such a series as a credible source.
