I just thought I'd post this here.

Grand Prix Memphis has FIVE Abzan Control decks in the Top 8.

Control? What happened to midrange?

February 22, 2015 7:43 p.m.

@ VampireArmy

They're calling all of it Abzan Control even though some of it is aggro and midrange.

Ah. Rhino wrecking the meta game too hard?

It's control because they cut the Sylvan Caryatid for End Hostilities and Bile Blights. They only play four Coursers, four Rhinos and 1-2 Tasigur. It also goes big enough (Ugin generally is somewhere in the 75) that it's a control deck rather than a midrange deck.

Unrelated but it super duper irks me when folks make vague forum titles. No hate to you man but a little specificity is nice :p

The only silver lining, is that none of the Abzan decks made the Finals.

@Jay Sorry 'bout that :)

It's all good homie

This week's SCG open has one Abzan deck in the top 8. It also has a Naya midrange deck. Local metagames matter. So do the skills of the pilots.

Any realistic deck has a shot in the current metagame. Abzan is just the posterchild "good stuff" deck.

Looks like Sultai is going to be on the way back.

Kung fu tokens tier viable?

February 22, 2015 8:40 p.m.

Ascendancy tokens is a real deck.

February 22, 2015 8:43 p.m.

I actually still believe that Jeskai Tokens is the best deck in the format. I've never been in a game with it where I just was just flat drawing dead. I once clawed back from 4 Rhinos and 2 Elspeths resolving on my opponent's side in a game one. The deck occasionally feels like it's a Modern deck in Standard.

On the other hand this is currently happening on SCG. The player on the left was at 2 when coverage joined the game.

This is also a thing apparently.

I've played against a guy at FNM running something very similar.

Works for me, did you try clearing your cache? because usually that solves most 404 errors :3

Might just be my phone. Oh well sorry for derailing the thread

The decks are sweet though. Looking the Abzan decks over, they agree on 55 maindeck cards. The rest are a toss-up and let you tune to beat RW Aggro, the mirror, etc.

Awesome deck.

I need to get my hands on that Waste Not/Dark Deal list. I'm trying to get a friend of mine back into competitive magic and he's just waiting for something like 8rack in Standard.
