I like mill. I like the new Disciple of Deception. I really do not like Phenax, God of Deception . And yet, Phenax is the natural choice for UB. Please help me learn to like Phenax.

And for Wizards to "waste" the U/B god on milling--nobody likes it.

Milling, as far as theme goes, is incredibly strong. Regardless, it's one of the worst ways to manage your resources in MTG. It's just silly. I hope WotC lets milling go already and stops trying to pigeonhole dimir into it. It makes for terrible limited play and has no relevancy outside of kitchen table magic. It sucks that two colors that were made for each other like U/B get the short end of the stick so often. Dimir and Golgari just get the worst stuff sometimes.

Agreed. Phenax, God of Deception is terribly boring - hell of a shame, since he's aesthetically one of the cooler gods, in my opinion - and House Dimir can do a lot with its infowar theme that isn't milling.

I'm gonna go with Black Oak of Odunos and Hidden Strings etc and see how that goes.

Wall of Frost along with Triton Tactics is fairly potent with Phenax.

I wouldn't say mill NEVER works, I remember ye olde Sanity Grinding and Mind Funeral . You can still run a mill deck, I mean, Jace, Memory Adept is M14. If you're running Phenax alongside him, he'll at least benefit from plenty of blockers! He'll have pretty decent synergy with King Macar, the Gold-Cursed ? Ya IDK man he sucks.

As far as limited, it doesn't bother me toooo much. I've shot the moon a couple of times with Tome Scour decks.

I watched a Star City Games commander match on YouTube, with David McDarby, and he was playing with Phenax, God of Deception as his commander. In one game he had the God out and activated, and equipped with a Umbral Mantle activated him, held priority, untapped him with +2/+2, tapped him again for effect, held priority again, untapped him with mantle and +2/+2 tapped him again and did it again, for a total of 30 card mill in one go.

In game 2 with Eater of the Dead out he cast Phenax, and the game ended that turn.

ChiefBell Umbral Mantle only costs 3 to untap, and as far as he was through his matchup in Commander not unusual at all.
