Only three people turned up for FNM

Tonight FNM didn't fire because only three people turned up to play.

Magic has really dropped off in my area.

Some of the other local shops no longer run FNM because there aren't enough people interested in it.

Has this been happening in your area?

At my local shop, Standard and Modern are definitely out of vogue. Standard will fire probably sixty percent of the time, but with maybe a dozen people on a good night. Modern usually only fires twice a month or so usually with around ten-twelve players.

That said, Commander and Draft fire every single weekend. The Commander room is usually full which would be a minimum of twenty four players. The Drafters play next door and there are at least a dozen, though it has grown substantially in the last few months. Most of the new growth is from people who used to play Modern or Standard. I'd say on an average Friday the shop gets 40-50 people playing up until close.

I asked my LGS if they had any Modern nights/tournaments and they said they are in the process of making that happen... then followed up with trying to sell me on showing up on fridays for an active Draft/Standard community that usually has 6-12 players on any given night.

I have asked about 5 different stores about Modern and basically the same thing gets said to me every time with a couple of them saying they have an EDH league with similar numbers.

Hmmn, that's not happening in my area. Typically 15-20 people show up. Haven't been there for a couple weeks though, so maybe somthings changed? It dosen't seem altogether too likley though.

Standard is basically nonexistent at the LGS I work at. People only show up when they know we have Standard Showdown packs, which isn't helping to grow the community. When we don't have the packs we get like 4 people.

yea, my LGS only gets 8 or so people for FNM anymore, but at least we fire it. We used to get 16 easy. Now, the reason for this is probably because there's about 5 other LGS's within a 30 minute drive of my LGS that are "better", which get 16-24 person FNM's easy.

@Jimmy_Chinchila: I haven't played Standard on paper since Theros-Khans, and even then I hated the format.

Since Arena, I've been playing a bunch of Standard because of the amount of meme decks I can build digitally for little to no money. The fact Teferi, Hero of Dominaria costs the same as Tezzeret, Cruel Machinist is a major plus.

But I think the real reason FNMs, especially Standard, are seeing lower turnouts is A) the price of Standard; and B) the meta has been garbage for years.

Most of the tier-1 decks are $400+ and sometimes hitting even $600. This is especially terrible because the smaller meta increases the demand of good cards. Playable mythics have destroyed the entire reason Standard was created in the first place.

Jimmy_Chinchila the owner of my regular LGS said he found numbers way down for the recent prerelease and thought that was due to Magic Arena.

sylvannos when I think about why I haven't been playing Standard much lately it has been due to the fact that everyone is playing the same deck and, if they don't, they are guaranteed to lose.

Which means you either have to spend $$$, or play against the same deck over and over.
