MUD Still Alive?

Standard forum

RTR block had all the good stuff to make Mono-Blue Devotion a thing.

With KTK, we have almost no good replacements but I still think the idea of an aggro deck in blue is viable, at least for FNM's.

Hm. I'm not convinced. Any evidence to support this claim?

It's dead right now because it has no devotion enablers for Master of Waves or Thassa, God of the Sea. There are two creatures with more than a single blue mana symbol right now that cost three or less.

Mindreaver which is honestly not that much better than Goblin Piker, and Wall of Frost which isn't winning any damage races without Doran, the Siege Tower and Wakestone Gargoyle along as well.

Maybe once the next set comes out which looks to see the return of hybrid mana.

MUD is dead for now, but there have been a few blue aggro decks gloating around, which are Mono Blue Fliers and Mono Blue Artifact Aggro with Juggernaut and Ensoul Artifact

Viable indicates a deck that can be successful. I see no success in blue weenies. Cards like Thassa and Master of Waves are great cards, but Master is dead now, and Thassa can just go into other decks that have blue in them, but not ever be active.

Mono U Devotion =/= MUD. Holy crap.

But Standard players know nothing of Mishra's Ultimate Domination so I am unsurprised. As a matter of fact this isn't the first time I've seen Mono-blue Devotion called "MUD" so I find it a weird place to see it pointed out for the first time.

@ Gidgetimer

I was so prepared to throw down the new MUD brew for Legacy. I was so confused and then sad.

I was excited too. But I noticed this was in the standard forum slightly after I clicked the link, so I was prepared for blue devotion talk.

Mono Blue is pretty dead right now. I'd say to wait until Fate Reforged, with the hybrid mana symbols coming then devotion is going to be a whole new card game. I have high hopes for several good blue cards.

I get confused when people talk about MUD as well, expecting legacy speak.

I'm not sure if people should get their hopes for hybrid mana up just yet. That there is hybrid mana in general doesn't mean that there is hybrid mana in casting costs.

@ Legacy players: which other abbreviation would you like people to use for Mono BlUe Devotion?

Servo_Token says... #16

I had thought that the legacy version was just called Mud, not MUD, because old artifacts are the color of, well, mud.

November 25, 2014 12:07 p.m.

How about Mono- and Mono-? Is that so hard guys?

November 25, 2014 12:16 p.m.

And to answer the question, yeah. Mono- is dead.

November 25, 2014 12:17 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #19

julianjmoss - no, MBD was Mono Black Devotion which was a deck in its own right.

The problem with saying Mono- or Mono- is that that doesn't denote what kind of deck it is. How do you differentiate between Mono- Aggro and Mono- Devotion? Same case for blue should it present itself.

TheHroth says... #21

I wasn't aware of the Legacy deck that shares the name. Sorry for the confusion guys!

While I certainly don't think any type of Mono- deck will be winning any tournaments right now, I think some version of it could do well at my DNM, provided it has a way of dealing with Abzan.

I've been testing with Mindreaver and it isn't all that bad. 2 devotion 2 power is decent.

Illusory Angel is quite good too.

RussischerZar: UD works for me for a blue devotion deck. I'm unclear on why the "Mono" is necessary at all. Devotion as a mechanic encourages mono-color decks and as such the outlier would be multi-color.Other options could include:

  • Smurfs (little blue guys)

  • MoW (Naming it after Master of Waves seems fine.)

  • U Dev (for the lazy that don't want to type or say "devotion")

  • Blue Crush

And I'm not even good at creating names. Anything except something that already exists as a deck name.

ThatBlueMage: Nope the Legacy/Vintage deck is MUD which is an acronym for Mishra's Ultimate Domination.

November 25, 2014 1:28 p.m.

Umm, ThatBlueMage, you kindof already made the distinction... "Mono- Devotion" and "Mono- Aggro". Or maybe MD and MA.

I've been working on a mono blue control deck that I suppose you could say splashes devotion for master. It is for sure slower, and I Don't think I would call it top tier like most of my decks. I just really missed windmill slamming Master of Waves. With some work and possibly with some FRF additions it may climb the tower to be a more viable sleeper deck. Don't lose hope just be creative with your build and think outside the box even dropping a master for 3-4 devotion is value
