Aether and energy sucks

Standard forum

Posted on Nov. 19, 2017, 4 p.m. by masterpeez

I just started looking at magic cards after not playing for a couple years. And I see this "energy" mechanic. Cmone, that's stupid. Mana already represents energy. And this "energy" is used just like mana, except its not mana, and you can only get it by buying new "energy" cards. And it implies that cards that don't use energy, somehow don't have energy or any way to use energy, which doesn't make any sense. Pokemon has energy, Magic has mana. This is not the Pokemon card game. This is the Magic card game. Energy is also already represented by tapping creatures. When a creature is tapped, it is spending its energy for the turn. If they wanted to do the energy thing right, they would have just made a bunch of cards that let you untap cards more easily.

My point is that the wizards of the coast are not real wizards. They no nothing about real magic. They are just milking players like cows for all they're worth. They are wasting the money that magic players faithfully gave them for the magic cardboard by making BS mechanics, like "energy". I say we boycott wizards of the coast by printing our own cards and playing the game without their approval.

Energy was just a mechanic in kaledesh... With a set about technology and such... Kinda like ninjustu in kamagawa, Isn't exactly evergreen like flying or something though not impossible for it to return. Though I will nod and agree I too didn't care for the energy mechanic.

_Delta_ says... #4

Isn't this a bit much? Like Icbrgr has already said, energy for now just was a one time thing with the kaladesh block. Sure it will return at some point, but it doesn't at all mark any change with regards to most other sets releasing.

I personally didn't mind energy, I wouldn't want to see it too much, but I would be interested to surely see it again at some point.

Educate yourself before you spout childish drivel.

Energy was a mechanic in Kaladesh, representative of mechanical power supplied by Aether, which was separate from mana. It was logical for the block because it was very technology-oriented in terms of both story and design. It simply offered a new mechanic to play with, an entirely optional one, mind you. There are no cards that punished you for not using energy, and decks that don't use energy were and are still played just fine.

Mana is natural magic derived from leylines. Energy represented power derived from Aether for use in machinery; magic used non-magically, as Kaladesh lore-wise had an aversion to mages. That's why, if creatures did use or give you energy, they either had some connection to Aether, such as Aether whales, or they used that energy for machine purposes, like making artifact tokens. Other creatures don't use energy because they don't have a natural link to those things in that way; that's not to say they aren't powerful in their own right, though.

Really, its not a complicated reasoning for the coexistence of Energy and Mana. You're just a wolf-crying fool.

Why did you delete my comment? I wasn't saying anything offensive. I wasn't insulting anyone. And I haven't played magic in a long time. I did not lose to any new mechanic. Why can't I just make a simple point?

Meanwhile, that guy called me a fool? Isn't that kind of a mean thing to say? Some other guy said, "I don't give a fuck." I thought swearing was not allowed on this website. But you didn't delete any of those guys' comments.

So, [whoever deleted my comment], fuck you, I'm going home.

No one deleted a comment, and why me specifically? Other people expressed the same sentiment. You are publicly whining, how did you expect that to go?

I have been watching this thread all day since it was created and not once did I see a comment from you until this point. So unless it was instantaneous there was no comment deleted. Secondly I think you will find that people are upset with you for the tone you used and the calling for a boycott doesn't help either. Just as well, making a statement without knowing the entirety of the mechanic or what it is you are commenting on can be seen as "whining" and an uninformed person making claims. That is not an insult just an observation that I have made. I don't think you should be insulted in any way as we should have respect for one another whilst using this site. So yeah those are my two cents on the matter.

Energy may share the same name as a game mechanic in Pokemon but it is really different in some awesome ways.

Energy does not cease existing between game phases. It doesn't attach itself to any one thing. Instead it is in a centralized pool that can get redistributed immediately the turn you have it. It has no color identity making it supremely versatile. Once you use it, it is gone. It never refreshes, untaps, or unattaches or anything.

Maybe a better name for that could have been found.

The one omplaint that I do agree with is that in MTG, there is usually an answer for everything. The fact that it disappears after use seems like the point of balance. Things like Fog work really well against it.

How do you know nobody deleted a comment? Are you a mod and can see what comments are deleted? If so, then I would have been right to accuse you, but do not worry, as I redacted your name from the accusation in my former post. And why presume you, well that's because people named Jay are all the same! To quote this is the end, Danny Mcbride says, "What? Then of course, there's Jay,the self-righteous, cock-sucking,two-faced backstabber."

And later Danny says, "Tell you what, why don't youfucking go, Mr. Self-Righteous?You're constantly saying whatassholes we are, how good you are."

To quote a former co-worker I had, "People named Jay are assholes." He said this, because as a child, he had a fellow school-mate named Jay, who was an asshole.

The evidence is overflowing.

There is Jay-Z, the rapper, whose latest album was criticized by nearly every important rapper for being bad. 50 Cent called it "golf course music."

And a comment I wrote did get deleted. Its in my browser history. That means, if you are a mod, and are able to see removed posts, you are lying.

I'm not whining, I'm complaining. I have the right to complain about mechanics in a game I have invested hundreds of dollars in over the years, so long as it is in the appropriate venue. If the founding fathers didn't complain about taxes, would there be a United States of America? Complaints lead to action, and I made a clear proposal for action. Stop buying cards from fake wizards, and make your own cardboard cards. And I'm not forcing it on anyone, just those that might agree with me that the wizards are fake, because they made a bogus mechanic called "energy".

You've been watching this thread all day? Really? I don't believe that. This thread is not very interesting. Do you really find this thread that interesting, that you are constantly refreshing the page? I find that unbelievable, yet again, anything is possible, and I may be wrong.

I have been been watching it all day because I wanted to see the responses to the claims that you were making. I thought it would be interesting to see how people responded to what you had said. I wasn't constantly refreshing the page because that would be silly however I have been refreshing it quite often. I find people's reactions to things fascinating. So maybe don't assume things next time there friend, and maybe don't insult people just because their name is Jay. I know some very nice men whom are named Jay.

After some thought, I've determined that masterpeez is nothing but your average internet troll. The evidence being: a negative, click-bait title, an over the top argument of what could be a legitimate issue, a ridiculous call for a boycott, a (so for) unfounded claim that a comment was of theirs was deleted, accusing others of lying, and some random hate on everyone named "Jay". Pretty standard stuff here.

And again, it's sad, because this could be a legitimate conversation. I personally don't like Kaladesh/Aether revolt on an aesthetic and mechanical standpoint, and the Energy mechanic is included in that.

But good lord. There's a much better way of going about discussing this than spewing out endless hate.

I will add that I too have been watching this thread, and while I still could be wrong, I never did see any other post by you that was subsequently deleted.

I just want to add something else anyways, if you think what Wizards of the Coast is doing with Magic is bad (Im only going off of what you have said rather than my own thoughts, as I actually think they are a good company) you should rather see video game companies like Activision. Go look up the game Destiny 2 (a video game that was developed for Xbox, PlayStation, and now PC gamers), made by the company Bungie, and their publisher Activision. I will try not to go into too much detail here, but you should see what they did with this game series. One which people came to love after the 2014 launch of the original Destiny (1) and its 3 years of updates up to the present with Destiny 2. They have gutted so many things that were well received in the first game back in 2014, and after 3 years of working on Destiny 2, the game feels like such a massive step backwards for the game. They changed and simplified too much, removed too much, all to appeal largely to new players as Activision I feel is greedy for profits, while angering many longtime players of the game. Bungie cant keep up with the publishers (Activision)demands and has had to make too many sacrifices and too many shortcuts, to deliver a game that feels hollow and lacking replayability.

Wizards of the Coast by comparison is much, much better I feel is what I wish to say in summary.

@Delta-117

Don't get me started on video game companies. I only play dwarf fortress, counter-strike, and nethack. All free games, except for counterstrike, which is 15 dollars. All the game companies are trash companies that make trash games. Every expensive game I've bought was trash and I stopped playing after a couple hours.

Of course I am exaggerating when I say that wizards is entirely evil and shit. But they need to be on top of their game, because millions of people give them billions of dollars, and I'm not happy when I see them making bogus mechanics like Energy. What are they doing? Someone needs to be fired. Seriously, they could hire 100 designers to come up with mechanic ideas if they wanted to, and all they could come up with was "energy/aether"? (They probably do have 100 designers).

@Suns_Champion your right the title of the post is too general. I didn't think it through. But I'm not a troll. I see myself more as a viking or mongol. And someone DID delete one of my posts.

All that needs to be said is that the energy mechanic is absolutely broken in standard, Wizards made some bold moves with Kaladesh and tried some risky things and sadly those risky decisions were in fact overpowered and has reduced a format to a one block standard season. With that said I know Wizards R&D team have admitted there mistake and are working to creating a powerful standard that is more balanced!

November 19, 2017 9:13 p.m.

multimedia says... #26

The current Standard team keeps admitting their mistakes, one after another and saying they're working to correct the problem, but the problem hasn't been corrected since Battle for Zendikar. It's now a pattern of mistakes that started all the way back with BFZ and continues today. The key point here is the current problems have become a pattern and just hoping that a pattern goes away is wishful thinking because it doesn't without major changes.

Reality is too many mistakes are being made by the current Standard team. It seems like every new block brings with it more mistakes. At what point is enough, enough? The current Standard team can't balance mechanics of a single set or block (delirium, energy) then how in the hell can we expect them to be able to balance mechanics that spread out over six sets or three blocks? We can't expect them to be able to do this they've shown they're not capable and that's a huge problem for Magic.

The removal of Core sets was a huge mistake as these sets were a buffer between blocks which could be used to print cards that will help to balance Standard at the time. The very notion that Wizards thought it would be okay to remove Core sets is just baffling. Just think if we had a Core set after Shadows Over Innistrad block. In the set could of been good balancing cards: graveyard hate, needle, anticipating that both energy, +1/+1 counters, Vehicles and tribal will be good in future sets. Even if they aren't good mechanics still print answer cards just in case they're good. Cards can be printed that are answers without revealing what the future mechanics are.

I hope for Standard's sake next year things are different starting with Dominaria. No more defined blocks of sets and sets can be arranged differently for example spread out with two or three sets on the same plane or a single set on only one plane. Core sets are back lets hope they're used to balance mechanics. Lets hope that mechanic philosophy is also changed spread out over sets even planes not just confined to one set. Wizards recently created a dedicated playtest team and my hope is this team of oldschool professional Magic players can finally balance Standard and most importantly R&D listens to them. These are all good changes, but that's the point they're changes which is the only way that Standard can be good again.

I really enjoy the mechanic.

StuBi and I have been mucking around with it since it first came out, and it is interesting to work out both how you're going to keep making new , and how to get the best value out of spending it.

I wasn't keen on Delerium.

I absolutely LOVE Vehicles. They are my favorite recent mechanic; MAYBE even my favorite mechanic of all time.

Standard is getting a little bit more balanced these days. I see a couple of different decks being played, rather than just the same two.

I agree that more work needs to be done on keeping it balanced, but I actually think the dominance of the Pro Tour is more damaging to the game than Wizards R&D.

I don't agree with the idea that we are being milked like cows. Cows give birth and then are hooked up to machines against their will to produce baby cow growth formula for humans to drink (in the hopes we turn into cows?). Magic is more of a product we buy because we enjoy the game. I myself play Aethertide Whale, and Aethersquall Ancient in my Kami deck.

Maybe we should take this time to tell tales of the good that the energy mechanic has brought into our lives.

Its way worse. I'm supposed to fish for potential future competition, players that have the know-how to create a trading card game that could actually take our business, and I'm supposed to sabotage his progress. Termination is encouraged if other means are not sufficient. I'm sorry. God, what have I become. Please forgive me, and perhaps we can take down the monstrous company once and for all. It is the least I can do, to help you all.
