Kaladesh Playability

Standard forum

So with a new standard comes new cards and a new meta. Here are a few questions I've already come across in testing that have to be answered in building a competitive deck for Kaladesh Standard.

  1. Spell Queller seems to have died down for a moment but it is still a force to be reckoned with.

  2. Do you have enough disruption to stop a Johnny from comboing out with Aetherflux Resevoir?

  3. Can your swarm of creatures survive a well-timed Radiant Flames? (I believe this will become the main low-cost sweeper in non-eldrazi decks now)

  4. Can your deck survive a Lost Legacy? A lot of decks lose their power without certain cards.

  5. Can you deal with artifacts effectively? (Fragmentize has been doing a lot of work for me).

  6. Can you stop a planeswalker before they ultimate? Super Friends is definitely looking like a major player.

  7. Do you have enough instant speed removal to not be ruined by a Nissa, Vital Force's +1?

  8. Can you stop Aethersquall Ancient from wrecking your board state?

  9. Are you weak to Emrakul, the Promised End? She is still a very big player in Standard.

  10. Can you answer an Aetherworks Marvel before it consumes you with big eldrazi?

These are just a few things I've noticed about the meta so far. Let me know if there's anything else you guys have noticed so we can all build better decks as a result. Happy brewing!

Zaueski,
A few quick thoughts:

  • Aether Hub makes Converge spells good again.
  • By the way, folks don't need Instant speed removal to deal with Nissa, Vital Force's +1. The Lands are Elemental creatures "until your next turn" so a chump block and Sorcery-speed removal work just fine.
  • That said, folks will need either Instant-speed removal or some serious Artifact Hate to deal with Vehicles.
  • Servos everywhere = Flying matters even more than normal.
  • Creature-heavy decks have to be able to deal with Authority of the Consuls and Fumigate.
  • Izzet Machine-gun survives rotation almost completely intact, so will likely be all over the place early.
  • Aggro's almost always strong early in a format. But it looks really strong here.

I'm brewing a simic deck that basically brings out Verdurous Gearhulk out and make a bunch of copies of it with cards like Altered Ego and Saheeli's Artistry
