Investments In Standard

Standard forum

When it comes to standard there's one aspect you have to you always have to keep in count for. Rotation. If you really think bout it there are some decks that are really gonna loose their stuff such as sultai. I know a lot of people don't run sultai with reaper of the wilds or nemesis of the mortals. But even at that sultai is prolly still taking the biggest hit of all. With courser, caryatid, downfall, eidolon, doomwake, and pharika leaving rotation next format. There isn't really much staple monsters in kahns of tarkir block for sultai to run. So with that said which one of the decks would you guys say is a more sound investment. To me it would have to be Jeskai it's keeping seeker, mantis rider, narset, hordeling outburst, monastery mentor, and maybe even soulfire grandmaster even if that's more of a RW card. Which would you say abzan? Mardu? Temur?

It really depends on what usable cards will be seen in DTK and origins. But Abzan will lose its early game, but could survive if it can replace that. Jeskai will be losing less cards, but ramblemaster is still a big lost. I would try a non clan deck if afraid of losing cards to rotation, as its still 3 releases away.

The question is will those cards still be good after rotation? Look at Thassa, God of the Sea and Gray Merchant of Asphodel

Pskinn abzan still has some early game in heir of the wilds and rakshasa. Although the fleecemane hit is a pretty major one. Good bye hexproof indestructible. I wonder if murderous cut is the only kill spell... Well that and that new black card that destroys monsters with one or more colors.

Planeswalkers always seem to go up after rotation, look at Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver. I think alot of people will default to straight clan decks so the cycle of clan rares like Siege Rhino and Savage Knuckleblade especially might should go up as well. Temur aggro won't be losing a whole lot so it will probably be one of the better decks right off the bat after rotation and for block play. Mardu colors might be good for block too since it will have all the boardwipes and Sarkhan, so right there you have a decent start for a midrange-control deck

Both Gray Merchant of Asphodel and Thassa, God of the Sea were huge cards in their respective archetypes in the previous standard, being mono-black devo and mono-blue devo. As for decks that will not be affected by rotation, I think the R/W builds and a lot of decks in the R/W/U region of colors. B/G lose so many cards.. You've named quite a few of them. In my opinion though, I don't think that these decks will leave, I just think there will be stuff to replace the cards. Standard is ever shifting, and they always make sure to replace the old cards(except for good sweepers and counterspells- I think they just hate control players, honestly). So, there will be a lot of change, but I think U/W/R is really isn't losing many cards.

So switch to mardu would be a good move?

Why would you need more than one board whip? They do the same thing....

February 26, 2015 3:54 p.m.

You don't need more than a single type of board wipe... but a good board wipe is good. And there really are not any on standard right now. End Hostilities is decent, but is a far cry from Day of Judgment.

Just having access to them, if you really wanted to drag a game out having 8 boardwipes would certainly do the trick against any creature based deck. You don't necessarily need them, but there have been some random Mardu W/x/x control popping up randomly, not as many as of late though. Plus, if you're playing with any dragons in your deck Crux of Fate won't kill your own guys, making it a one sided wipe. Which is very desirable

Lol which just coast one less

Crux might be a little better

Lol good read math

Dude imagine making a control deck with 8 board whips only problem I see happening is those damn planes walkers... Who really can thrive off a creature board whip...

Want something that is safe after rotation? B/W Warriors, all the cards are KtK. Cant speak for how good any deck will be when we get a new block so I don't think it's worth worrying to much. Mono Red Sligh is always a good deck and wont cost you to much.

February 26, 2015 4:16 p.m.

Well lol I did see one deck that I took a liking to in warriors!

Yeah man the point of the thread is just basically saying I thnk I only wanna pick up ktk cards from here on..

Oh yeah I've seen mono red but most of those cards are in theros

Titan streagthFire drinkerRabble masterEdiolon of great revThe one ugly troll

All theros block cards :/

Depends on how you build it. RDW is what I'm running and if you drop the 3 Eidolons in the SB you can get the deck for around 30$ and still win FNMs with it. I am and it's really solid right now.

If your looking at a BW warriors deck I'd recomend having a look here: http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/article.asp?ID=12387

There are some easy swaps to make it better, like adding more Valorous Stance and Gods Willing over cards like sorin, Banishing Light and some of the SB cards. Run Scoured Barrens over Temple of Silence and 2 of the Mana Confluence to keep down the cost of none KtK cards.

Honestly, I would invest in a playset (or more) of Grim Haruspex. With Exploit being a new mechanic, and since it already has synergies with current cards, it's a very safe investment. At most, you are looking at a $4 gamble? I'd say it's worth it.

I see where you're coming from with Grim Haruspex but I don't think it's going to see a whole lot of play. Exploit seems more like a mechanic that would be used more in draft or EDH instead of standard or modern.

I heard sacing and dying are two different things man :/

March 3, 2015 10:09 p.m.

Actually I can see sidisi getting play time with exploit. It looks pretty good as a tutor

Dying is if something leaves the battlefield and goes to the graveyard. Sacrificing falls under the category of dying so it would work that way. But it just seems like a lot to get some card draw when you could just run blue/black and run digs.

Asked judge chat a couple of days ago they ruled it another way
