I'm back... but I'm very lost

Hello everyone, it's been a while but I think I'm going to come back to playing Magic for a while. I stopped right when khans of tarkir rotated out, came back for a short while with kaladesh and haven't played since. I ended up selling all of my cards so I hardly have any. I've been thinking about going to an FNM soon since they lend decks out, but I honestly have no idea how to even get started with that. What should I do to smoothly get back into it without getting clapped on my first day playing again?

Download Magic Arena if you can! Completely free, just have to grind for the cards you want! It’s a great place to play standard.

You can go to https://www.mtgtop8.com/format?f=ST for info on what the top decks are currently so you will better understand the deck you're playing with, or at least know what kind of decks the competition will be playing.

Also, I'd read up on the current cards and abilities. As per usual, there are several new abilities with each set, so since Kaladesh there have been tons of changes.

Limited (draft/sealed) is also a great way to get back into Magic. You can learn the new abilities and have the same chance of success as the person to your left/right! Magic Arena also has limited for free.

Welcome back!

Forget Standard; play Commander. Ask your LGS if they have a Commander league for FNM and if they do join it. You can use any cards that you have left over from your days playing before you quit in a Commander deck. You can't use any of them in Standard.

Cards in a Commander deck don't rotate out; cards in Standard all rotate out. If you build a Commander deck and then leave the game again. If you decide to return you can then play that same deck when you return. You can't do this with a Standard deck since cards rotate at the Fall set each year and cards of each set are only legal in Standard for two years.

There are only two kinds people who play Commander. Those who run degenerate combos, and those who get mad at degenerate combo. Commander is undeniably un-fun. It’s all politics and the games last 4 hours if you’re playing with more than 3 people because everybody takes 20 minutes to take their turns.

Standard is where you want to be if you like a competitive element to your games, and like them to go quickly and smoothly. Also, Arena is completely free and supports Standard. Commander has to be played with other people.

Daveslab2022 I think you need a play group. Commander is decidedly the MOST fun of all formats. Its the only place you can play the deck of your dreams, possibly win, and have fun doing it. You just playing with the wrong crowd bro.

Man, I’ve played with several different play groups. Before college, 3 separate during, and after. All have been the same. Either I get hated on for attacking somebody “too early” or I get targeted because of the commander I’m playing (It was Zuurgo Helmsmasher w/ a token theme because I didn’t have the voltron cards). And they all targeted me first every single time. I had that deck for years. It doesn’t even make sense. One dude was playing friggen Oloro, Ageless Ascetic and didn’t get attacked once.

Some of the newer deck builders kits are helpful to get back into MTG. I strongly recommend the Ravnica Allegiance Deck Builders Toolkit(I think that's what it's called)
