Could Saporlings actually be a good deck???

Standard forum

In my Dominaria prerelease I built a very fun saporling deck and went 3-1 with it. After that prerelease I tried to build a standard saporling deck but I realized how many board wipes are in standard right now that could completely ruin the game plan.Ive basically given up on the saporling deck since then but if anyone has any suggestions please post them. Thanks!!

Well you'll need to think of some other way to get value out of your Saprolings when they die, then.

Where did you try ? At prerelease?

If that was the only place that will NOT give you an idea about how well Counter spells will work. You have access to so many more of them in Standard.

You wouldn't splash for

You'd go full on

Which Control decks were you testing it against?

I would play it as BG so as to get access to removal, and play Heroic Intervention to protect your hordes. In the case you do get wiped, you can easily sac your creatures, as it is a deck with many sac outlets, and leave the board wipe dead.

with saproling you want to play mono green or Black/Green

If you went you could use Journey to Eternity  Flip to bring Creatures back.

You could also use Vraska, Relic Seeker higher up your curve. She's very good at closing out games.

Vraska dosent go along with the aggressive strategy of the deck but Journey to Eternity is a good idea.

Look we can all agree that there are many "wrath" type cards in standard right and it's good that we look ahead on whats countering our deck...

but the most important thing in an token deck is that you can keep up the pressure and swarm the field even if you've got "wrath"ed.

If they wrath then use the other tokenmakers in your hand, dont overextend is what im trying to say.

"Don't put all your eggs in one basket" is all i'm really saying.

A aristocrat styled saporling deck seems sweet in my opinion, well we got the legendary aristocrat himself Slimefoot, the Stowaway and Vraska, Relic Seeker as a powerful planeswalker sooo im brewing :)

Fungal Plots is a way for you to not really care if they board wipe your Saprolings.

"You're gonna board wipe me? Fine. I'll just draw three thousand cards and gain six thousand life."

true and Fungal Plots a free sac outlet not like Hidden Stockpile where you need 1 mana to activate the ability but i suppose this is why Abzan is a powerful Token combination.

I had same thoughts with prerelease. I'm going to try and break the fungus/saproling tribal with a Yahenni and Torgaar. Both provide a decent sac mechanic and can help avoid some board wipes.

Trainreck101: Torgaar, Famine Incarnate doesn't help avoid a board wipe.

Argy: not only is your example extremely exaggerated, but you couldn't draw 3000 cards without losing

buckeyetron I was joking.

That's very clear.

this deck should go Black green saproling tokens, this deck is kinda bad honestly, its like something you would see at a casual open house, if your new im sorry but if your not then you should know how to build decks, this deck is going so many directions

buckeyetron Torgaar, Famine Incarnate has a big enough body and is legendary for new board wipes such as Urza's Ruinous Blastand The First Eruption not to mention the already in play token hater Sweltering Suns. And potential to only play two black makes him something to look at for a stronger threat. Never said all board wipes.

I'm just gonna mention Vraska, Relic Seeker again because I believe it was knocked on the head too quickly.

It gives you another win con all on its own. You should have enough Creatures to protect it.

It also give you an edge in the mirror match, so at the very least it should be Sideboard tech.

Not all games are gonna be over by Turn 6. Even Ramunap had the late game strategy of using Hazoret.

I'm hoping something at least FNM worthy rises to the top and sticks. In any case, TappedOut just added a Saproling hub to put all the brews in!!
