This Standard format sure has a lot of banned cards...

Personally, I utterly dislike this. I am not much of a standard player but I think this is a case of too much too late.

  1. Too much - there are now 8 cards banned in standard. Deckbuilding is super weird and more importantly, this means that no deck is safe from the banhammer - I do not want to do well in FNM, so that my deck doesn't get banned.

  2. Too late - Wizards cant test for s**t. They missed 2 card infnite combos within the same block, 1 card combos like Marvel and incredibly oppressive stuff like Emrakul. But they did drop the ball in terms of the power level of Kaladesh. Energy has been consistently the best deck since the mechanic was first available and 3-4 color energy Midrange decks have ravaged standard since a few months after the ban of saheeli.

RR decks are strong but it is more of a factor that other strategies are weak, like control. There is no viable boardwipe, no cheap counters, few good removals and overall nothing impactful.

Well, this will make me more inclined to come back down to FNM as I didn't want to play energy, nor did I like having to play against it constantly.

Hopefully this produces a healthier meta with more interesting decks.

I saw the Attune ban coming a mile away. I wasn't sure they were going to pull the trigger on Rogue Refiner.

Banning two key elements of RR however; that caught me completely by surprise.

I think this is a good thing however.

Now; I forsee an upsurge of GPG decks

Definitely a fan of this banning, energy was fun for a while but things got a little ridiculous. I feel Ramunap Red was also too strong so this should make for a more diverse standard environment. Give some other brews a chance!

Did ramunap really need the bans? Guess you gotta push weak tribes somehow

I read Rogue Refiner's flavor text again just now and had to laugh a little bit

I'm honestly shocked to see so many people disliking these bans. Ignorance abounds.

Is there anything even remotely close that could teplace ramunap ruins? Or is the land base for the deck now completely screwed

I'm going to miss Attune with Aether for color fixing, but Renegade Map should work in its place.

Maybe Path of Mettle  Flip will replace the ruins in a boros shell

I think these bans are ok.

My only concern is with Rampaging Ferocidon gone...

GPG decks, UW Control. With Regal Caracal, and Angel of Invention.

yeah...

I personally like Renegade Map better because what if you attune to get a forest that you need, then draw into a forest next turn? You don't have to immediately use Renegade Maps ability and it helps you get the city's blessing faster if you don't ever need to crack it, if that matters.

The Ramunap ban does nothing. Red has gotten a plethora of amazing aggro cards this expansion and still has many more from the old decklists that are staying around. Do not expect tribal to gain any foothold over it.

Is Rekindling Phoenix a viable replacement for the Rampaging Ferocidon?

FNM was becoming a LOT less fun to play if you brewed.

There was just no way to beat the top decks so netdecking ALWAYS won.

I can't remember that happening for a while.

It was part of the reason I gave up playing.

If it's possible now to win through building, then FNM looks more interesting to me.

dthoreson813 Mountains work for colour, but aren't a great replacement for Ramunap Ruins as they don't give you the late game direct damage.

They aren't actually a good replacement, for that reason.

Unsure as to whether you were just trying to be funny. If so, carry on.

Alot of people are saying that Approach and God's Pharaoh Gift are going to be the top tier decks.

I say bring it. Bolas is ready for prime time now.

The Attune with Aether banning makes sense as the two energy T1 is pretty backbreaking. I even agree the Ramunap Ruins banning as it basically lowered your opponent's starting life total with viable answer (Field of Ruin is just too slow), but the banning of Rogue Refiner and Rampaging Ferocidon just seem like too much. Neither were that oppressive and could be easily interacted with.

I love their reasoning behind the banning of the Rampaging Ferocidon: They designed it to combat the Saheeli-Cat combo (which they accidentally missed in R&D), but then banned the combo anyways. Now they have to (undeservedly) ban the card because it suppresses counter strategies to Red Aggro. I absolutely love Wizards forethought on this...

Rogue Refiner had too much going for it. For a 3CMC it gives you a pretty nice beater; energy producer, and it replaces itself in your hand. Alot of times it's T3 Refiner, T4 Hydra. You get a hub down between T1 and 4 you have the energy to shield your Hydra from removal before ETB trigger; without the energy from Attune.
