I did predict that some people would go back to playing Snek Deck.

Disappointed to see Marvel decks dominating. Hardly a new archetype.

Am surprised that Control hasn't done better.

Some wag said this in the chat:

Well that Marvel vs Marvel semi was pretty much Snoozemalog.

I can't believe it. That was actually an interesting game with lots of interactions between Zombies and Energy.

Already mostly foiled the WB list I am running(down to Fatal Push Really). Bought out the Foil Zombie tokens at LGS last week. Love being ahead of the curve on this set. For Once

Argeaux NOLAMOG is the best meme! Just stopped by to say: WOTC gives us Gods, annnnnnd they aren't worth playing =(

WOTC gives us a new mechanic AND!!!!! ...nope it isn't worth playing either.

I didn't see any Gods get played.

Coz they are basically crap. Apart from the Green one, you have to do so much work to use them. Not a patch on the Theros Gods.

To be honest, there wasn't much that was particularly Amonkhet-flavoured.

Most of the Zombie cards were from Eldritch Moon, the Marvel decks have been around for ages, and then there was Mardu Vehicles.

If you release a set and then the majority of the cards played at the following Pro Tour are barely being used? I'd say that's a bit of a failure.

My prediction for my local meta is that most of them will play Temur Marvel, just like most of them played Green White Tokens.

It's the safest option.

tfw u placed all ur bet in mardu but none of them reached top 8

To be fair, A. Hating out Mardu (its Public Enemy #1) is pretty easy,B. The deck did fine, most of its pilots faltered in Draft rounds, andC. If you invested in Mardu last season, and the season before, like most people. You have gotten more than your money's worth of play time out of that deck.

Unlike Zombies, it took 5 Sets (SOI, EMN, KDH, AER, AKH) to get the pieces to play it and we lose most of it in a couple months. when SOI and EMN get rotated.

Wyrmweird and Argeaux,
I know the Gods didn't get any airtime, but Patrick Dickmann's Jund Gods (7-2-1 at PT AKH) did all right. And frankly, compared to some of the marquee cards from recent sets (cough, Emrakul, the Promised End, cough), I'm OK with them not totally being totally OP :-)

Argeaux,
Against a meta full of Marvel decks, I recommend Alex Stok's BW Control (7-3 at PT AKH). It earned a 5-0 record vs. Marvel last weekend.

noxusmachine,
Yeah, but Mardu will still be a thing for sure. Two copies made 8-2 and 11 went 7-3, so not making Top 8 is more about the pilots needing to practice Draft than the deck suddenly being bad. Plus a 50% overall PT win rate -- especially when everyone is gunning against you -- is still pretty great.

I still can't believe not a single Mardu Vehicles/Ballista/Aggro did good

Snivy__,
But Mardu did do good.

A 7-3 record in Standard was good enough to make Top 8 IF the pilot also did well in Draft (that's how both Ken Yukuhiro and Yuuya Watanabe got there). And as I mention above, two Mardu decks made 8-2 and 11 went 7-3.

Like I also mention, Mardu has a 50% overall win percentage at the PT (source), despite the fact that everyone was gunning to beat them. Now that people have to be gunning to beat Marvel and Zombie as well, I expect Mardu will do even better.

Argy says... #22

clayperce you should know by now that I dislike playing decks built by other people.

A lot of eople will follow the meta set by the top 8.

As a result I would expect to see less Mardu Vehicle decks, and more Marvel and Zombie decks.

Argeaux,
I just noticed your comment about UR Control in the original post. I was surprised to not see more too. I wonder if they were maybe too tilted towards Mardu and not enough towards Marvel or Zombies. One deck -- Peter Vieren's UR Control (8-2 at PT AKH) -- seemed to find the right balance though, and it will be very interesting to see if the archetype gains traction moving forward ...

Argeaux,
Oh, I know ... I can't imagine you playing Alex Stok's deck any more than I can imagine him (or her?) playing Minotaurs!

But that doesn't change my recommendation :-)

Argy says... #25

Zaraeleus a lot of the Zombies used in those decks also come from SOI and EMN.

I hope people who might invest in those decks realise that they won't have a lot of their key pieces, after rotation.

Argeaux,
Following up on your comment, "If you release a set and then the majority of the cards played at the following Pro Tour are barely being used? I'd say that's a bit of a failure" ...

That is SO true. I just noticed list of Day 2 cards near the bottom of this article. Turns out Dread Wanderer is the ONLY Amonkhet card to make the list ... and it's at #25. At least it's a Rare, so Wizards can sell SOME boxes to stores/folks needing to crack one. Imagine if Magma Spray had been the only card on that list, at Common ...

Zaraeleus says... #27

Argeaux Not sure most people know that, I do for sure as I have a lot invested in it. Fortunately before Zombies were a thing I had most of the crazy expensive (now) cards from SOI and EMN.To be fair, Crypt is amazing, but we have no idea what the next sets might bring with em to keep tribal archetype alive. For now, I will have to just enjoy my summer and 2x gamedays I will get out of this deck.

I am hoping WB gets overlooked a little. That's what I run, I feel like the answers are generally better than Mono b. what WB gives up in land base consistency it gets back in long game and answers.
