Altered Ego

I'm so frustrated with the ruling of Altered Ego not copying counters, ONLY because of the wording. It says 'X ADDITIONAL 1/1 counters'. Is this a grammatical error that contradicts the ruling or am I going crazy? And does anyone know some sweet standard decks that work with altered ego? I made a standard deck that ramps like crazy and had 10 mana on turn 4 (2 were for creature spells only), but since I don't want big eldrazi I can't think of anything cool to dump the mana into. Any suggestions? Preferably something that works well with altered ego; OR a low mana creature I can copy with Altered Ego and dump the mana into for counters? like unblocking for example (standard legal please).

Side note: I was playing without Second Harvest or Cryptolith Rite and using scion tokens to ramp (I know scion tokens have summoning sickness and cannot be effected by CR right away). I feel adding one or both could push the ramp of scion tokens over the top.

I'm fairly sure that none of the clones have ever copied counters. The 'additional' is probably just there for if you're copying a creature that gets counters as an ETB.

I have Altered Ego in the sb of my GU ramp deck, That's an awfully nice Ormendahl you got there.... Works beautifully against midrange or control and is hands down standards best answer to Dragonlord Silumgar, as well as being nice vs other fatties such as Atarka or Ormendahl.

is a pretty neat deck using Ego as an infinite combo starter

If the ETB thing was the reason why then that makes complete sense.

I am trying it out in Edric edh to copy my wimpy unblockable creatures (or the best creature out there). I might consider something similar with infect creatures but that deck doesn't tend to build up Mana resources quite as steadily.

The abundance of great cards that have "When you cast" puts a damper on the usefulness of this card. I did however once get to copy an activated Shambling Vent my opponent controled. Altered Ego entered the battlefield as a non-creature land with 2 +1/+1 counters on it. I happened to have access to white and black mana, so I was able every turn to attack with a 4/5 lifelinker who doesn't die to Ultimate Price, Grasp of Darkness, Anguished Unmaking, Ruinous Path, Languish, Sorin, Ob Nixilis. I think Murder (or blockers) was the only possible out to that card.

Since this thread just got semi-necroed anyway, I'd like to point that that Altered Ego is currently standards best answer to Brisela, Voice of Nightmares. (I'm fairly sure you can copy it anyway)

If you can get the mana that fast, I would say awaken part the waterveil. I would also look into mind's dilation; I think the card is more powerful than given credit for, and yes they can just remove it with a dromoka's command or something, but it works off of their cast, so you get at least one trigger no matter what. They want to use their CoCo? you get dibs on at least the first card. I figured if you are playing a deck that copies things, why not just use their cards outright. and Planeswalkers. you have the mana to cast them and protect them in the same turn, I would go hog wild with it.
