Hello eveyone, I know it has been a while since I was on the site and I wanted to give everyone the opportunity to ask me any Standard qustions to which I can reply. My credentials are on my account page. I will be getting back into the mix and playing at higher level tournaments very shortly as I had to take a hiatus for college and work. So please fire your questions away and I will try to include the answers on the forum and in an upcoming article I will write up :D

I am also testing a deck atm and am on Cockatrice a lot. Leave me a msg if you want to duel after 5:30pm EST.

Why has smuggler's copter and the vehicles archetype fallen out of favor in recent weeks? Is vehicles not a top tier deck anymore?

What top 8s in various tournaments exactly and how did you do in the GPs youve been to?

Cableguy says... #4

@Boza: I think Smuggler's copter is still prevelant and the archetype is still good but requires a good pilot. An example of this was how Reid Duke just won a Standard Classic with the deck. However recently U/W Flash has definitely shown to be on top and that is primarily because the current standard format is beginning to settle into place. When a rotation happens the first shift is always towards aggro and as time goes on it tends to lean more towards midrange, tempo, and control. This is because people learn what cards to use and what cards to counter within their builds and how to effectivel sideboard. R/W Vehicles has about the same popularity level right now as Mono White Humans did in the previous rotation. It wills till be one of the top 3 or 4 decks at any event but any deck with Black and access to Grasp is going to hurt the deck so long as the draws line up. It is an aggro deck and another point to add is that the red cards in Kaladesh wernt exactly anything exciting or very useful. Sure we got a better Chandra but it actually does not fit into an aggro role. I suspect with Aether Revolt comes out we will see RW Vehicles take controla gain assuming Ajani makes a return. I coudl go into a lot more detaila about this and I will attempt to do so in an article :D for now I hope I answered the majority of the question.

@EmblemMan: Star City classics, PTQ's, Fringe Touraments, GP Baltimore, GP Orlando, and a lot more! I currently live in Orlando but I was previously located in Roanoke Virgia aka The Star City.

Hello and welcome back! Do you feel there are still deck combinations out there to be discovered or do you feel the scene has found most of what it needs to? Also where did Cableguy come about? :D

November 17, 2016 1:01 p.m.

Cableguy says... #6

@Blood_Veteran: I think everything has been discovered by this point but I think we have potential cards set for their own decks but they need more help from future sets like Refurbish for example. Cableguy came about a LOOOONG time ago when the movie Cable Guy came out starring Jim Carrey. My name is Billy and there is a scene where he visits the main character in prison and presses his chest against the visitors glass and yells "OOOOH BIIIILLLY" and since then the name stuck with my friends .-.'

How do you view the build around cards in Standard right now (Metallurgic Summonings, Aetherflux Reservoir, Hedron Alignment etc.) Do such combo/control decks have a place in the meta?

November 18, 2016 2:22 a.m.

Cableguy says... #9

@Boza:At the moment I feel those cards are not good and if anything are fringe non-competitive decks. Strictly for funsies. However there is a chance that Aetherflux might see more play if it gets more support in the upcoming sets. I would say "NO" on a competitive level to the others.

I have decks that were built around Aetherflux Reservoir and Hedron Alignment.

The Reservoir deck I've been playing for weeks and it's truly exciting since it can burst out the win from as little as one health, and has. It does require a bit of setup, as expected, but I think it's a perfectly viable deck. It's built around itself and cheating out all four copies of Metalwork Colossus in the process which can win the game by themselves.

The Alignment was a challenge, but I paired it with Zombies and absolutely love it. I only put the finishing polish on it today, but I'm confident that it will play well since in testing it plays out incredibly consistent and hits either an aggro win or alignment win at the same exact pace with little variation. It's also quite fun and rebuilds itself just as fast as it gets torn apart. I think it'll be hard to contend with since it plays and does things from the hand, graveyard, and even exile and the Zombies themselves will take a lot of cards to keep off the table which draws fire away from you and if left unchecked they can absolutely swarm your opponent. In the background you are secretly piecing together the Alignment and it should prove too much to overcome all at once. Speed is the best way to overcome it but I think it's solid.

I also have a friend that built a very solid deck around Summonings that pairs it with Tamiyo as an incredible finisher. It's a little slow, but in casual formats like multiplayer and two headed giant it's an absolute bomb if you don't stop it.

Well, I didn't look hard enough to see that this post was not general discussion but specifically to ask Cableguy questions. I noticed the question about the Alignment as a recent comment about the card >.<

That said, I agree that these cards are for "funsies" and not competitive beyond home games and maybe placing at a local FNM. The Reservoir is the most likely to spill into more competitive play, so I agree with that too. Totally fun to build around them though as a building challenge, with all of them there are countless directions you could take it.

While I'm here I can ask my own question though: Three nearly broken abilities were all suggested during Kaladesh (i.e. Reservoir = Storm, Rashmi = Cascade, and Metalwork Colossus = Affinity) in altered and much more balanced forms. Do you think this hints towards more cards in those categories if they can balance it or do you think adding more of these effects are too easily exploitable and too powerful?

They certainly are fun to build around and play, but Affinity in particular nearly ruined the game way back when and caused a lot of people to stop playing.

Thanks, and sorry for not looking before posting, I would have handled that differently.

I haven't played Standard before but with Standard Showdown being a thing, I might give it a try. I want to hear your thoughts on SaffronOlive's "Budget" BW Fabricate deck and any advice you have on playing it, especially since I don't know what decks are in Standard right now. I would also like to say that I think this thread idea is great and thank you for posting it!

EDIT: I also have 4 empty spots in the SB because I'm too cheap to buy Gideon and Avacyn so any ideas on what to put there would be greatly appreciated :)

I've got a question regarding Gideon, Ally of Zendikar since he's in 65% of standard decks right now i figured mine should have a way to deal with him. the first thing i thought of was Murder but then i remembered indestructible so that was a no go, but then i thought Grasp of Darkness. not sure how it interacts bc idk if -4/-4 is considered damage or if its counters and if so, would it still die at 0? a ruling on this would help me a lot as i am new to competitive mtg, thanks.

TheRickRoller says... #15

i just realized Gideon is a 5/5 when he becomes a creature so I'm still gonna need to find a different card to deal with him but id still like to know how it would work if he was a 4/4 with indestructible and prevent all damage

Boza says... #16

He would still die for having 0 toughness. The best ways in standard to get rid of him is something like Stasis Snare, if he is attacking.

I will be going GP Portland and by then Hour of devastation will be out. I mostly play modern but I have this deck Text and a mono blue counterspell deck. I have fifty dollars to spend so do you think I should buy a new deck or improve one of those decks. Also what cards will rotate out.

Hey quick question,I'm building a G/W humans deck for armonkhetI have most of it ready, just curious about Champion of Rhonas and if I use its exert to bring Thalia's Lieutenant

Attacking: Champion of Rhonas and two other random attacking humans

Would Thalia's Lieutenant's ability activate before or after combat damage?

May 26, 2017 1:35 a.m.

Blard says... #21

I'm pretty sure before damage because you choose to exert champion of rhonas when you declare it as an attacker not when you resolve combat.

Does Protean Raider copy the targeted creatures flash ability in a way that allows it to be played as an instant during the Combat Phase?

2 Island, 1 Mountain and 1 Dire Fleet Poisoner are in play; Protean Raider in hand

Combat Phase begins and Dire Fleet Poisoner declared as an attacker.

Can I tap the necessary mana to cast Protean Raider during the Declare Attackers Phase and choose to copy Dire Fleet Poisoner in order to use the triggered +1/+1 from the Protean Raider copy of Dire Fleet Poisoner on the attacking Dire Fleet Poisoner BEFORE the Declare Blockers Phase begins?

Thank you!

Hello everyone! I am a "new" player and am looking for some assistance. I say "new" because the last time I played MTG was, well, quite some time ago. Anyone remember the Revised Edition magic cards? Yeah, it has been that long. Anyways, does anyone know where I can find decks for dominaria or a Rivals of Ixalan AND Dominaria deck I can use as a base deck to build mine off of? I've tried searching the web and every deck I have come across are a mix of multiple editions. Thank you in advance for any help

I think your best bet to get into standard quickly is look into Challeger decks. Sure, a big part of them rotate out in the fall, but hey. Otherwise, look into buil;ding your own - for example mono green aggro, featuring Llanowar Elves, Steel Leaf Champion and Ghalta, Primal Hunger is almost exclusive to rivals and dominaria, with a few choice inclusions from other sets - Blossoming Defense and Verdurous Gearhulk.

I just finished writing a long comment, but long story short I am here rewriting this comment. First things to note I am only 16 years old and have not been playing Standard until this year. I was always eying Green as one of the my favorite colors in Standard, when I was talking with my friend and he was running Red Black (he does not net deck so it was not exactly like the top decks but very similar.) and he said that green was not a powerful deck. So I set out to prove him wrong this is my current deck Rhonas's Monument. I went to my stores Championship this weekend and finished with a 3-1 record. I lost to a Constrictor deck 1-2 and won against Mono Blue Djin 2-1, Mono Red Agro (the one with Bomat courier) 2-0, and won against Esper control 2-0 overall my record was pretty good, However every time I go to a standard showdown or FNM I am asked why I don't play Steel Leaf Champion and This is the question I am here to talk about. If you want your deck to succeed in standard Then it has to do something well, if you want it to be a top tier deck it usually has to do that something better than any other deck. This is my problem with Mono Green Stompy in Standard right now. it is trying to be a powerful agro deck however results from tournaments have shown that Red Black agro just does that better. I think the problem is Steel leaf Champion because while a powerful card he is not fast/consistent enough to beat Red Black. He doesn't capitalize on the things Green does Best. This is why my deck does not have him. I think it is a big mistake to play him. If you have any thing to add about this topic please message me and if you take a look at my deck and have any suggestions please comment on the deck. I am trying to tune it and eventually I will probable splash blue or black.

June 25, 2018 7:42 p.m.

Boza says... #31

Well, Champion is a good answer to Goblin Chainwhirler and is the most efficient beater available to Mono G. In fact, it is only reason to be mono green.

Your deck lacks any interaction with the opponent game one, which is bad. You can reasonably substitute the 4 diviners, 4 wildgrowth walkers, 3 vezier with 4 steelleaf and 4 Blossoming Defense and 3 brontodont main.

June 26, 2018 10:51 a.m.

I am aware of this, and will, after tuning the deck, splash either Blue or Black. However I don't believe that Steel Leaf Champion is the only reason to play Green, or that it is a good against Goblin Chainwhirler, I will agree (because no one would disagree) that Steel Leaf is the most effective beater, but I don't agree with stompy as a strategy until rotation. My deck is able to beat Red and Red Black pretty easily. It also has a chance against control removal heavy decks. The reason for the janky explore cards such as diviners is because of Vizier of the Menagerie and Rhonas's Monument a combo which allows you to gain massive amounts of creatures. Instead of trying to win quickly I have shifted the focus to a loose combo and value engine. This is something only Green has the luxury of doing because of big butts like Greenbelt Rampager, in this deck Ixalli's Diviner and Wildgrowth Walker also work as powerful defence against agro creatures.
