Embalm Standard

Hey guys,

Anybody got any advice on this deck? First standard deck in a long time and I have no idea about the meta, but i had a bunch of these guys from draft dregs so I cobbled something together to have a standard deck. Not looking to compete beyond the LGS level.

whole premise of the deck is simple. get one of the two drops out, preferably the wayward servant on turn 2, turn 3 lord, turn 4 anointed procession, turn 5 lili/lili's mastery, and get a mini rhino swing (or 2 life if u got the anointer priest and not the servant) every turn while making ur board state bigger and bigger. If the game drags on or ur Lili mills get lucky, get a Noosegraf Mob out to really force the numbers, swing for win eventually or life drain them eventually.

The Angel removes scary things, becomes ridiculously strong with embalm + procession, anointers make good chump blockers because you can embalm them back in large numbers if you have anointed procession out later in the game, the trueheart duelist makes a good blocker if they go for liliana, and can come back as tokens. deck's all about value and going wide.

EDIT: I don't own any of the sideboard, using the sideboard as a want list right now.

If you don't mind a light blue splash, Aven Wind Guide would work well for your deck, giving all your tokens (including embalmed creatures) flying and vigilance. Cryptbreaker is also a meta defining card right now. It allows you to dicard embalm creatures to generate more tokens, and tap zombies for card draw.

Evolving Wilds is very potent right now as well. It gets you into your colors early game and thins out lands from your deck late game.

the deck had a bit of blue in it in an earlier version, with Aven Wind Guide, Vizier of Many Faces, and Invocation of St. Traft, but in testing on mtgo i felt like i wasn't hitting blue lands enough and forces me to run alot of tapped lands, and the payoff was often minimal, so I'm gonna stick with Orzhov unless I'm finding myself really really needing the evasion/flying. if thats the case i'll go back to esper.

Cryptbreaker is a must tho omg! embalm for days with that guy!

ahh but I dont think i'm gonna invest in money for Cryptbreaker though. Eldritch is gonna rotate in a few months, no point dropping 40 bucks on a few months with it.

bakedntired that is fair. Thanks to the protour Cryptbreaker jumped in price. If you do go back to Esper, keep the Evolving Wilds in mind they can definitly help you reach that blue.

should i run 4 evolving wilds rather than the 4 tapped lands? i guess i gotta make that choice between multicolor versatility vs the filtering huh.

Personally, I would run 4 Evolving Wilds, replacing 4 basic lands (2 each, unless you find one color you need more of than another). You may also want to consider replacing the tapped lands with Concealed Courtyard (If you can swing ~ $6 a pop). They are untapped in the early game, when it is most vital (late game, tapped lands are much less painful), and still give you 2 colors.

I have an embalm type deck that I've had a blast playing that might give you some suggestions.

I'm thinking about messing around with making it Abzan with like 2 or 3 cryptolith rites so that i can use created tokens and zombies to ramp. does that sound like a good idea?

That could work. If you did add green I would keep it down to a very small splash. Other than the mana ramp, green has very little to offer a zombie/embalm deck, so anything you add will be pulling away from the original deck design. Keep this in mind about the Cryptolith Rite, however: The more zombies you have the better the Cryptolith Rite works, but the more zombies you have the less you need it. (and Vise Versa, the less zombies you have the more you need it, but the less zombies you have the less it works.) This should not be a deal breaker by any means, but just keep that in mind while balancing the pros and cons of the Cryptolith Rite in this deck. When you need it most, it is at its least effective.
