Anti-Control Cards

Standard Deck Help forum

Hi,

Recently, I have been having a bit of trouble with my Standard deck against Control matchups. My deck is a deck that relies on the combo of Resplendent Angel and Lyra Dawnbringer to create almost infinite Angels, with some other helpers such as Aurelia and Shalai, Voice of Plenty. There are about 10 Control players out of the 40 people in my meta, so it's a pretty big worry for me. If you could help me out with this rising problem, it would be great.

Thanks,

Hexaflexagon

How are you creating "infinite angels"? Because it seems like you'd only get 1 4/4 a turn...?

Also, I recommend some number of Carnage Tyrants to assist in the Control match ups.

Hey UpperDeckerTaco,

Thanks for your comment. It's not exactly infinite Angels, but without anyone getting killed, I can get Angels with no drawback. One of the tokens die, another one replaces it. I do agree with you on Carnage Tyrant and have one, but I have no idea what card I should take out. Do I take out a Vivien Reid or Crushing Canopy?

Thanks,

Not a huge fan of Assure//Assemble...I think you could cut those, add 2 Carnage Tyrants minimum and would leave you a slot for something else (example: March of the Multitudes)...my thinking, the indestructible doesn't matter in this format all that much...due to the amount of exile effects: Seal Away, Settle the Wreckage, Vraska's Contempt, Ixalan's Binding, etc...

Hey UpperDeckerTaco,

Thanks for your third comment. I really appreciate the time you've put into my deck. I can see your reasoning on Assure / Assemble, but I'd like to keep it in there as a combat trick or if I need some extra blockers. I'd rathar take out Crushing Canopy as it doesn't really help with control decks in my opinion. So I'll add 1x Carnage Tyrant (I only have one due to the price) and take out 1x Crushing Canopy for now.

Thanks again,

Hey Hex, consider Carnage Tyrant, Vivien Reid and Find / Finality for Control matchups?

I think any deck playing green can benefit from Find / Finality for Control matchups. Angels are very vulnerable to counterspells especially Scatter. Find can recur two Angels for two mana this can include both Resplendent and Lyra. You're playing Branchwalker, as Golgari has shown us explore is great with Find.

Tyrant and Find is another powerful combination because your opponent is going to have to deal with Tyrant which is not easy. Opponent will most likely have to trade a Crackling or Whisperer for Tyrant or find a Cleansing Nova ASAP. When this happens being able to recur the Dino and another creature for two mana is very good. Finality is busted with Tyrant and you're playing Drover of the Mighty who can make black mana. Finality also seems pretty good with Lyra/Shalai/Aureila.

Vivien Reid can be repeatable creature draw or flying creature removal to kill Crackling/Niv-Mizzet/Whisperer/Bolas/Thief/Eater etc. the majority of the finishers control is playing are flying creatures.

Hey multimedia,

Thanks for your, again, extremely helpful comment.

I totally agree with you that Find / Finality is a good card for my deck, so that's going into the sideboard. I already have Vivien Reid and Carnage Tyrant in my sideboard, so they're staying in. I'll write a update abouyt my PTQ version once a get home.
