Seems good

Here's a source

This seems good I think. Very good in limited, with potential in the U/W heroic deck.

Fingers still crossed that this isn't another BoTG :P

That's the second modal spell of the three spoilers we've seen. And the third spoiler had hybrid mana - also a very "the choice is yours" kind of mechanic. You think modal spells are gonna be a big thing in this set?

As for how good the card is, I don't know. I don't play Standard. Might be a decent Sunforger target in EDH?

dbpunk says... #5

Here's the thing: the second set is about time travel.

And what's one huge sci-fi rule of time travel? The things you do while time traveling change things. Especially the choices you make. So yeah, I see choice spells being a thing.

Seems like a good replacement for Suspension Field in the decks that run it. Permanently solves the issue and goes to the graveyard immediately to fuel a Dig or Cruise later on. I'm "digging" it....haha, you all see what I did there?

It hits Siege Rhino, Wingmate Roc, Prognostic Sphinx, Courser of Kruphix, all of mono green's threats. Temur will hate this, too. Takes care of Goblin Rabblemaster when he is bigger. I think this will see a bunch of standard play in control and aggro sideboards.

December 16, 2014 9:19 p.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #7

Unless you're making Goblin Rabblemaster bigger with some other spell, it can't hit him at all - the Rabblemaster's third ability only affects power.

Meanwhile, Black is still waiting for good two mana removal.

Arvail says... #9

This is quite stellar for draft. I could see this being played constructed as well. Not outside standard though.

I can really behind this is we get a lot of cards that have multiple modes. Like baby versions of the various charm cycles. Flexibility is a great thing in a card. Also for the same reason man-lands are good, they don't take up a creatures slot. This is removal that doesn't take up a protection slot (I'm thinking of / heroic in particular). Already shaping up to not be like BoTG :p

December 16, 2014 10:50 p.m.

This is the Reprisal that I would LOVE to mainboard in a threat-light (meaning only Seeker of the Way and Mantis Rider) Jeskai Tempo deck. I am very happy to see this card!

-Axion- says... #13

Where was this spolier from? I'm dying to know wha this set is going to look like. =)

December 16, 2014 10:53 p.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #14

Apparently it's supposed to be Reid Duke's spoiler on the 29th, but was put up early accidentally.

December 16, 2014 10:54 p.m.

Also, I love modal spells. Print a bunch of them, WotC! (maybe Cryptic Command? =D)

December 16, 2014 11:02 p.m.

jr92_2000 says... #16

Is this really that good in heroic? Holding up 2 mana rather than 1 isn't ideal and big blockers aren't that problematic for the deck (since it builds its own large creature easily).

This seems better suited for midrange strategies that can take advantage of the flexibility.

December 16, 2014 11:02 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #17

hmmm, this might be an ok replacement for Reprisal...? it definitely hits quite a lot of stuff that needs to be hit, INCLUDING Courser which Reprisal doesnt.

December 16, 2014 11:06 p.m.

Hickorysbane says... #18

jr92_2000, I think of it like a possible replacement for Feat of Resistance that can take out something on the other side of the board without lowering the number of protection spells you can have.

December 16, 2014 11:09 p.m.

The original article (now locked, unfortunately) was titled "Linear Strategies" by Reid Duke. Also, just in case they take down the link or something, picture proof (it's the first link at the top):

December 16, 2014 11:11 p.m.

jr92_2000 says... #20

@PrecintSix6Six Possibly, but protection is so much better than indestructible with the amount of exile around. If it finds its way into the deck, I'm guessing it'd be at the expense of Ajani's Presence.

Jeskai Tokens seems like a decent place for it.

December 16, 2014 11:25 p.m.

JA14732 says... #21

Hm. It's a strictly-better Reprisal, which is an excellent card itself.

December 16, 2014 11:33 p.m.

Hickorysbane says... #22

All the links!! W

No really though, that's basically all of the ones that didn't give me error 403 or 404

December 16, 2014 11:57 p.m.

@PrecintSix6Six
Thanks! I was able to recover the full article from a link in the reddit page. For anyone wishing to read it, this is the link.

For those who don't read, it basically draws parallels between the efficients creature and synergies in "linear" decks (meaning creature-based synergy decks) and UW Heroic. Reid then describes how the spoiled card would empower the UW Heroic strategy.

Hickorysbane says... #26

The Annihilator, I couldn't get to that link for whatever reason. Gracias :p

esper control here I come!

December 17, 2014 1:53 a.m.

shinobigarth says... #29

this can fit nicely into a lot of decks, I'm putting this in my Mardu control-ish that I'm still working on as i was already considering Reprisal

December 17, 2014 2:43 a.m.

The_Raven says... #30

So good in heroic. Need that protection? Here you go! Need to exile a Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker? Here you go!

December 17, 2014 6:31 a.m.

The_Raven says... #31

Eh, derp... Thought it did exile....

JakeHarlow says... #32

Nice modal spell. I agree, could be a major theme, which I find cool.

December 17, 2014 6:47 a.m.

JakeHarlow says... #33

Ad for those who think it's a strictly-better Reprisal, look once more -- the destroy mode is contingent on toughness, not power. So not strictly better. Strictly different. Also, Reprisal denies regeneration.

December 17, 2014 6:50 a.m.

tooTimid says... #34

Upon further evaluation I think this is a very Craig Wesoce card.

4 Soldier of the Pantheon

4 Seeker of the Way

4 Valorous Stance

I can see Craig jamming this shell until kingdom come.

December 17, 2014 9:35 a.m.

Either protect your guy or remove a threat. Seems good.

December 17, 2014 10:38 a.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #36

I think it's dope and versatile but it's what black needs not white. White has Ajani's Presence & Suspension Field already.

FatherLiir says... #37

In limited drafts and I predict at the pre-release this thing will be the bomb shelter to whatever other bombs that will come

December 17, 2014 11:31 a.m.

jr92_2000 says... #38

Yeah, this thing looks extremely powerful in limited.

I'm interested to see how they set up the prerelease for this set. Are clans still a thing?

December 17, 2014 12:38 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #39

jr92_2000 - The clans were around 1000 years ago, but they were not as well formed as they are in KTK. Which is why they are using Hybrid mana to bridge the gap between a Wedge set (KTK) and a non-Wedge set (DTK), so like Yasova is with a / ability there is likely a cycle of old Khans which are the color of the center of the clan with an activated/triggered ability using hybrid of the other two.

shinobigarth says... #40

JakeHarlow i don't know if anyone said its strictly better than Reprisal, but the only played things it doesnt hit that Reprisal does is Fanatic of Mogis (still in red aggro?), Boon Satyr (not played as much as before in green to my knowledge), Ashcloud Phoenix and Indulgent Tormentor which might not be that played. and Rakshasa Deathdealer I'm pretty sure is the only dude with regenerate that's played right now (which can be killed with either card if they activate the +2/+2, and then if they wanna save it then they have to pay another ). though i haven't been to FNM in quite a while so i might be wrong. anyway being able to kill a lot of the same stuff and Courser as well i think makes it more useful in white IMO.

December 17, 2014 3:42 p.m.

jr92_2000 says... #41

@shinobigarth Goblin Rabblemaster is the big one. You generally see power pumped more often than toughness, say with a Titan's Strength, so Reprisal would help there.

They predominantly hit the same targets but each answers a few specific targets that the other will miss.

December 17, 2014 4:15 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #42

Yeah Rabblemaster is like the only main one you'd need to worry about but mono white has other things to take care of that, and more if you add other colors.

December 17, 2014 7:35 p.m.

I'm starting to temper my initial hype upon seeing this card but it still seems like awesome sideboard tech against a boardwipe-heavy control decks (given that orzhov has three with Perilous Vault, End Hostilities and the upcoming Crux of Fate I wouldn't be surprised) and midrange strategies and other strategies with monsters like Polukranos, World Eater, Brimaz, King of Oreskos, Siege Rhino and Wingmate Roc

While I really prefer to play red decks this card gives makes me more interested to take another look at the Orzhov Aggro list I've been toying with.

December 17, 2014 10:12 p.m.

Seems effective alongside Rabblemaster to protect it or clear the way. This is the mana efficient removal for Courser of Kruphix and Brimaz, King of Oreskos that has been missing in Standard. Good when ahead or behind as well, pretty sure this will see play.

that too

December 17, 2014 11:28 p.m.

I'll take 4 please.

December 18, 2014 2:19 a.m.

name a real creature threat besides rabblemaster it dosnt kill though and deathdealers I guess if they get to be a thing. Its a solid probable constructed possible card and niiiice in limited.

December 18, 2014 2:26 a.m.

shinobigarth says... #50

ColdHeartedSith I'm kind of ok with it vs Deathdealer because it'll become relevant if they pump Deathdealer, and then they have to spend another 2 mana to save it vs our 2 mana only. mana might not be an issue for a deck running Deathdealer, but hey thats 2 less mana they get that turn.
