canterlotguardian - I can be wily at times :p

GoldGhost012 - It was all but confirmed that Liliana had a role to play in the block after BFZ, so this shouldn't be too big of a surprise.

I am dying. My queen returns. My starter plane with my favorite plansewalker up to no good. WITH A LOVECRAFT THEME?! I'm shaking!

JWiley129 says... #7

Yeah, it's hard to deny the Shadows over Innsmouth allegories anymore. Especially after mechanics named delirium, madness, investigate, and skulk. All things that are related to Lovecraftian lore. I am salivating at the flavor opportunities here.

I'm go ahead and insert the key art for Eldtrich Moon here for people to drool over.

February 8, 2016 11:41 a.m.

That's the actual spelling. Eldritch.

February 8, 2016 11:41 a.m.

JWiley129 says... #11

I think he means the font type, not the word.

logansullivan says... #16

So black Blood Moon maybe?

February 8, 2016 12:50 p.m.

Or just a Bad Moon reprint perhaps? Far less exciting but flavorful!

Eldritch Moon, sounds like the black brother of Blood Moon, 2B all nonbasic lands are swamps, man I would laugh so hard if they do that.

February 8, 2016 2:45 p.m.

C4rnif3X says... #21

Liliana, the Veil Sculptor

February 8, 2016 3:32 p.m.

Arvail says... #22

No man. WotC no longer likes placing powerful effects on noncreature permanents. Instead, they put those on overcosted creatures. It'll be something like this:

The Unplayable Magus-
Creature - Vampire Wizard
Flying
Nonbasic lands are Swamps.
3/3

Price on release: $1.20
Price after a month: $0.30

February 8, 2016 3:51 p.m. Edited.

JWiley129 says... #23

I highly doubt we'll see another Blood Moon type effect anytime soon.

February 8, 2016 4:03 p.m.

Depends... Wizards could overreact to the new Eldrazi deck in modern and print a variant of Blood Moon to try and nerf it without having to ban anything... Im sure its happened in the past.

JWiley129 says... #25

LittleBlueHero - By the time we hear about the set, it's too late for them to change the sets. Sets are finalized 6-9 months before they launch.

Caligula says... #26

LittleBlueHero it's been stated time and time again, Wizards doesn't give a rats ass about modern, They print for standard and then ban later

@ TheDevicer I laughed so hard at "The Unplayable Magus".

...That's no moon

But in all seriousness the first thought in my head was "Rise of the Zombies"

Wow, this set looks very awesome, indeed, and I am very excited for the entire block!

Why is Liliana in this block? She has defeated Griselbrand, so what reason does she have to be on Innistrad? Is it simply because its dark and creepy nature appeals to her?

I believe that it is safe to say that the moon of Innistrad shall somehow be important to the story in this block, so I hope that Tamiyo will appear in some capacity in this block, and hopefully play an actual role in the story, this time. As long as I am discussing that subject, what, exactly, was the significane of the name of Dark Ascension? Who or what was ascending into darkness?

Also, why have the two sets for this block not had catchy taglines? Many sets in the past had those, but they do not seem to be having them, any more.

Rayenous says... #30

I'm thinking something like Pale Moon.

Would fit the theme of the block, while working with the previous block's theme/mechanics.

February 9, 2016 8:16 a.m.

mpeach1 says... #31

Would be pretty nifty if it tapped for a B instead of colorless

Named_Tawyny says... #32

So, Lovecraftian horror. If this doesn't all but confirm a certain Ms Ema Krul in the SOI Block, I'm not sure what would.

February 10, 2016 10:25 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #33

There's more to Lovecraft than noodley appendages.

I still doubt Emrakul will appear, and I also still REALLY don't want her in this block.

February 10, 2016 10:39 p.m.

logansullivan says... #34

JWiley129 thank you, I have been building a Lovecraft themed edh deck and everyone thinks it's only sea monsters and eldrazi, it's not by the way I'm taking themes and objects from many of his stories to make a pretty sub par powered deck but is way up on the flavor scale.

February 10, 2016 11:12 p.m.

That's no moon...

February 11, 2016 4 a.m.

Rayenous says... #36

@logansullivan - Please tell me it's a Cromat deck.

February 11, 2016 7:45 a.m.

logansullivan says... #37

I'm actually debating the commander it's either going to be wrexial, for obvious reasons, or lazav because he matches up extremely well with the description of hastur the king in yellow.

February 11, 2016 9:44 a.m.

Atony1400 says... #38

Yeah JWiley129. We just had 2 Eldrazi sets, I don't think they will jump planes that quick.

February 11, 2016 10:22 a.m.

Disappointed no one got my "that's no moon" reference.

February 11, 2016 2:24 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #40

No, we got it, it's just not a top priority to recognize your puns :)

February 11, 2016 2:28 p.m.

logansullivan says... #41

If they did that I would hope it was dimir or sultai because I would want to use it for the commander because lazav only has a passing resemblance to hastur

Peeps are so hyped by the new discard mechanic. I'm choosing to remain skeptical.

There are only a few old cards worth playing as self discard enablers. Bassically Liliana of the Veil, Smallpox, and Faithless Looting.

Burning Inquiry and Dangerous Wager are almost playable but randomness really hurts the former and most decks in modern are hard pressed to use spells so fast that Dangerous Wager always ends up being draw 2 cards for .

The Lightning Axe is a very welcome reprint at a time where modern is going towards big 4/4 and 5/5 creatures. You might actually be able to use Madness with it in the right decks. I hope they do reprint Dangerous Wager though and give it the right support (cheap spells like Lightning Axe) because if you can quickly use all of the cards in your hand the spell has the potential to be good.

JWiley129 says... #43

kengiczar - New discard mechanic? You just made Fiery Temper, Basking Rootwalla, and Circular Logic cry!

February 11, 2016 9:51 p.m.

kengiczar says... #44

I couldn't remember the name if it was Madness or Hellbent so I just said discard mechanic.
