Today is the start of preview season for the set.

A lot of the set has already been spoiled.

Crucible and scapeshift are nice reprints.. i like the dragon queen and nicol bolas flipwalker for my Scion EDH deck as well :) 11 mana planeswalker might be a bit too much tho.

Friendly reminder that any cards posted in text or pictures should only be for cards spoiled through official channels. It’ll save you grief in the future trust me haha.

Phaetion says... #5

My word, Wizards have been hitting it out of the ballpark with these reprints. I hope they continue this trend.

New cards-wise, the only ones I have to pick up are Meteor Golem and (maybe) Dark-Dweller Oracle for my Anthology project. Otherwise I'd be onto that Bolas pretty sharp. Oh my poor wallet...

Respledent angel is standard playable I think. And if there is a little more support lifegain could be a viable strategy against red decks since we also have Ajani's Pridemate back.

I am beyond excited that we are getting a new cycle of elder dragons. Bolas is interesting to me since its in colors that normally like to control the board but is more of an aggressive threat. I really want to build a brawl deck with him but I have a feeling I will be hated out just for using it.

Vaevictus Asmadi is also a fun commander/brawl candidate in a group slug style deck. however a 6/6 flier for 6 in three colors that does nothing when it hits the board doesn't seem fast enough in standard where we have red aggro decks running rampant.

Palladia Mors is a rather interesting design space. While her ability ensures that she will deal combat damage to either a player of creature once before potentially being targeted you could argue you are still paying 6 mana for 6 damage. Where I am curious is if there are enough effects in the game to maybe build a commander deck where all I need is to get her in play then benefit from effects like Triumph of Ferocity. Or perhaps using Sandskin or Ghostly Possession somehow? I don't know... I feel like there might be something there is I can find a payoff.

Can't wait to see the rest.

Phaetion says... #7

LittleBlueHero: I just had a little spark of inspiration for Palladia-Mors.

...what if that deck was a flicker deck? Sure, you lose , but you could flicker Palladia to reset the Hexproof after she smashes someone in the face. From there, go full CIP/ETB and go from there.

LittleBlueHero says... #8

Phaetion, This is why I am on this site... throw out an idea and someone will almost always have a way to take it further or tell you, nope not gonna work lol.

Flicker is a great way to keep her kicking. I know there are a few repeatable effects in white like Angel of Condemnation (which is still in standard for a bit for what its worth). I think you are on to something. Wether its something worth building... well thats something brewing will help us figure out. If you concept anything up let me know I will do the same, but I probably won't be messing with decks till after all the spoilers hit.

Five Planeswalker decks for core! I want to know the 'walkers and their abilities. Might just need to go through the full list of cards spoiled this time.

Has Esper finally got a reanimator general for EDH?

Hmmmm.. Chromium will fit in nicely in my Esper Control Standard deck

June 19, 2018 11:19 a.m.

Chromium is such a flavor win. For any who aren't in the know, Chromium turned into a human after imprisoning Palladia Mors and Turning Vaevictus Asmadi into a lizard.

Just all like "K thats done peace out."

June 19, 2018 11:26 a.m.

Phaetion says... #13

I was wondering what happened to Asmadi. Thanks for refreshing my memory.

June 19, 2018 11:33 a.m.

I would love to see a legendary lizard version of Asmadi in a future set...

June 19, 2018 11:35 a.m.

AgentGreen says... #15

The only thing that makes Chromium great and not OP is the exploit in the 2nd ability.

Opponent swings with 7/7, chump with a 1/1 flyer, before damage is applied, hit Chromium with removal. The creature dies to removal; or trades with the 1/1

June 19, 2018 11:44 a.m.

Chromium looks very interesting indeed and gives me Dragonlord Ojutai (though not as good) vibes. Looks like a solid control finisher as well as a rather unique Esper commander.

When I first saw Goreclaw I became really excited for my Mayael deck, but the more I think about it, the less certain I am about adding it to the 99. If it have 5 power it would be a home run, but the slots for creatures that can't be hit by Mayael are extremely competitive. On a side note, Ghalta, Primal Hunger approves of this card.

Also, I hope that is Surrak finally getting his comeuppance :)

June 19, 2018 2:45 p.m.

I understand why its not but she would have been perfect if she was a 4/4. As it is she is still a fun timmy card that I will thoroughly enjoy playing with. She may even take over as my mono green brawl commander.

Playing Rhonas the Indomitable for 1 or Thorn Elemental for 5 just seems like so much fun.

However, the Crucible of Worlds reprint has me thinking I'll be sticking with Nissa, Vital Force at least for now.

June 19, 2018 3:17 p.m.

Phaetion says... #18

Now that has the right to bear arms!

...I'll show myself out.

June 19, 2018 3:39 p.m. Edited.

Phaetion: she doesn't need the right to. She'll still bear arms. On the end of her bear arms. And she got her name because surrak barely stood a chance against her with his bear hands.

Bear with me a little longer.

Legendary. Bear.

Gonna order this and gonna play this. I can barely wait any longer.

Guys, just imagine:

T1: llanowar elves

T2: steel leaf champion

T3: goreclaw

T4: ghalta. And we still have 3 mana open to cast a four-powered fivedrop.

June 19, 2018 4:31 p.m.

I have been playing mono green at FNM and Standard Showdowns lately. The honest to god truth is this. Elves die immediately. Players will remove them even before they cast Goblin Chainwhirler because they know how much mono green wants em to stick.

Thats why I was sad the bear wasn't a 4/4 I still see a lot of Abrades in the red and red/black decks im playing against. I don't know that I want to risk my turn 3 or 4 playing a single creature to get me to another creature. Casting Steel Leaf Champion into Rhonas the Indomitable has been working for me pretty well though. Not saying I wont try the ole girl out cuz I totally will, I just think id rather have another 2 drop or 3 drop because its become very important for my deck to be able to play out 2 or more creatures in a turn for fear of just losing the one creature I play each time. :(

YES! a legend bear!

How many bears have 4+ power? Just asking for a friend...

For the love of everything I have wanted to make a Heartless Summoning Modern Deck Work. Bah God Goreclaw May let me finally be able to do it.

Reddit has spoiled our final elder dragon

enter image description here

Its a nice nod to his original card and perfectly buildable as a commander. I can't think of too many standard defenders that make me want to build defender.dec at the moment but you never know!

June 20, 2018 3:14 p.m.

Oh I forgot Ugin is getting a card... our second to last Elder Dragon.

June 20, 2018 3:15 p.m.

Snake_Oil says... #27

This just means there's going to be a good few Defenders in M19 to justify running Arcades.

This is my dream commander -- I've made custom Bant Defender Lords, dreaming of this day.

Although, in terms of reprints, Stalwart Shield-Bearers or something as innocent as Pride Guardian might not be a bad shout.

So stoked.

June 20, 2018 3:34 p.m.

Sees Arcades...sighs...opens up wallet

June 20, 2018 4:11 p.m.

Phaetion says... #29

Arcades would be right up my alley, but I already got the Anthology to mess around with, so I'm not really motivated to build anything new for now (plus sleeving everything up plus the Anthology itself destroyed my wallet, but hey, it was $150+ well spent).

June 20, 2018 4:22 p.m.

AgentGreen says... #30

The new Mystic Archeologist is a nice card for a Control mirror

June 21, 2018 11:59 a.m.

I find it kind of interesting that we are getting all 10 common dual tapped lands in a set that really isn't focused on multi-color. That being said, splashing colors will be much easier so I ain't complaining.

June 21, 2018 7:04 p.m.

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor: we're heading to ravnica next sets. Might be the reason for that ;)

June 22, 2018 12:18 a.m.

That is a very good point!

FINALLY a set with cards that I can build some new stuff with.

And not one focused around Tribes.

June 27, 2018 10:18 a.m.

Argy says... #36

Here's one to shut down decks for the remainder of their time.

I got the image from the Wizards' spoiler page.

June 27, 2018 10:56 a.m.

HARDsofty says... #37

I would get Resplendent Angel for my Modern Angel deck, but I'm already using Intangible Virtue to pump my angel tokens while giving them vigilance.

June 27, 2018 11:47 a.m.

Eh, this set is just as tribal as Dominaria was. Energy is already pretty much dead at this point and I don't see this set shaking things up much in Standard. I think this set will likely impact other formats more.

I love that new angel and it seems like a fun addition to a modern angels deck!

June 27, 2018 11:59 a.m.

Argy says... #39

There are tribes you CAN build around, but there are also lots of Creature cards that work well outside their tribe.

That's the difference.

June 28, 2018 10:03 a.m.

True, which is the same as how Dominaria was. The key cards to saprolings and knights were strong on their own and didn't really need any support. Wizards was the only tribe that really needed a critical mass to be good, and even then, most of their top cards were still decent on their own.

What is everyone hoping to pull/play come pre-release?

July 2, 2018 12:22 p.m.

ERoss8 says... #42

Nicol Bolas, the Ravager  Flip seems sweet in limited, and a decent commander creature (maybe not the commander tho). Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma and Runic Armasaur are sweet as well. I’m pretty much happy with anything aside from the hate cards or Pelakka Wurm at rare.

July 2, 2018 3:20 p.m.

Arcades, the Strategist or Scapeshift would be dream pulls for me, but getting to play with either Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma or Sai, Master Thopterist would be pretty fun.

Came home from playing midnight prerelease.

Some decks had themes like Mill, Control, and one in particular used Creatures with high toughness, then the Dragon that makes their toughness deal damage.

Dragons were basically used whenever they were cracked. All of them seemed quite strong.

Although some people had wanted to play Zombies before opening their packs, no one ended up doing so.

In fact there were no Tribal decks at all.

Set has very good removal.

The only cards I cracked that I cared about were a foil Guttersnipe, and a Demanding Dragon.

July 6, 2018 3:04 p.m.

Demanding Dragon is a great limited pull.

In general sealed is a lot harder to build focused decks around than draft, since you have no say in what you get.

I was out of town and unable to attend but my friend that went said he was underwhelmed with Core19 sealed. There is so much stuff in the set it makes pulling together a plan that much harder.

The themes between the colors are definitely there, but they are hard to support with a sealed pool he said. He still had fun its just the deck he made and the decks he played were almost entirely random goodstuff (which is kinda what it should be in sealed I think)

Playing tribal or focusing on a two color combination will hopefully be easier on Draft weekend when I can pick and choose them a little easier. Im hoping for a good pack 1... my biggest problem is I never get a good idea of what I should be doing early enough :/

How was everyone else event? Any fun happenings? Did anyone get to cast an elder dragon? Which cards were unexpectedly good/huge let downs?

July 9, 2018 1:16 p.m.

HARDsofty says... #46

I got the White 'walker deck during Prerelease. Gonna trade towards packs and singles come Friday. I just love opening packs, so don't dawg on me for not only getting singles!

July 10, 2018 1:59 a.m.

HARDsofty I can't dawg on you at all... there is something special about cracking packs.

I have tried to only crack packs to play limited now, however having a whole booster box unopened is soooo hard to look at... its like a drug.

July 10, 2018 9:33 a.m.

HARDsofty says... #48

Went and got a bundle from a LGS since they didn't have any singles out yet. Cracked Resplendent Angel and Tezzeret, Artifice Master! I'll be using both in decks!

July 13, 2018 2:34 p.m.

Went to supersized draft yesterday. Pack 2 Pick one was Palladia-Mors, the Ruiner and from then on I was drafting more with my heart than my head. Pack 4 pick one was Lathliss, Dragon Queen and I was passed Chromium, the Mutable by the shop owner who laughed and said "I'm handing you money". I admittedly scooped that up even though it wasn't in my colors. Things seemed like they would work out.

Having the two big dragons you'd think I would have found a way to make things work but it was REALLY hard to fix for three colors, I only ever saw/got one relevant dual and one Manalith. I lost most games because I was stuck on 2 colors. Next draft I will not try and force 3 color. Ended up going 1-2.

Turns out though one of the guys a the table drafted almost all the fixers and played some weird 4 color deck to a 2-1 record. So it might not be that fixing is light, we just had this strange strategy to contend with.

Prize pack had Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire, so even though I did terrible I consider ending up with 3 elder dragons a good day for this limited player.

July 16, 2018 8:55 a.m.

Nice pulls, and yeah I think you had a unique draft. 3 (even 4) color decks are SUPER easy (like easier than during Khans) to build in this format with the amount of dual lands and low rarity fixing floating around. Especially if you are base green.

I did a draft yesterday and P1-P1 Chromium, the Mutable. I proceeded to build basically a voltron commander deck. It was all card draw and control with multiple Marauder's Axe's and Reassembling Skeleton's. I only dropped 2 games the entire draft to the eventual winner who was playing mono-red with Sarkhan's Unsealing and ample Thud targets (I watched him do 18 dmg on turn 5 in the final match with a combo of Sarkhan's Unsealing, Goblin Motivator, Inferno Hellion, and Thud).
