Speculation on new dinosaurs with Rivals of Ixalan

Hi,

I'm looking forward to spoilers on Rivals of Ixalan because I wish for some more dinosaurs that aren't basically vanillas (My Gishath EDH deck needs some more tools that also have the dinosaur creature type).

So what kind of dinosaurs do you expect or desire for Rivals of Ixalan? Will there even be dinosaurs in or ?

I will start with some ideas myself:

  • a white dinosaur with an etb-effect like Angel of Finality. Would this still be compatible with the flavor of dinosaurs?

  • a red dinosaur with an etb-effect like Mindclaw Shaman. Or would this be even more odd flavorwise?

  • a green dinosaur like Reclamation Sage. This seems to me more likely than the first two suggestions.

  • also some more dinosaurs with an efficient body and trample would be nice

I honestly expected Mindclaw Shaman would be errata'd to have the dino subtype.

I think a reclamation sage or even a Manic Vandal type dino would be very on flavor.

We already have Deathgorge Scavenger doing great things against graveyards so I don't know that wed see the angel ability. But thanks to that card its on flavor for sure.

Flavorwise I don't think Mindclaw fits at all. Love the card but it just can't see a dinosaur involved in spell casting.

In my head Dinosaurs are beasts. They aren't magic really in any way so most of the things they can and will do will be built around combat and buffs etc. I would love to see them go after the minor lifegain theme they have going bringing in something like Ravenous Baloth type effect. They also need a strong way to close out games. Gishath is great but I still think an etb Overrun esque effect would be awesome to have on a dino like Pathbreaker Ibex. Really just more faux Lords that grant abilities and such like Bellowing Tanglewurm.

My favorite green card has always been Eternal Witness and while i don't think it makes a ton of sense I would love that type of effect on a dino, even if it cost more for a bigger body like Greenwarden of Murasa.

Also a large flier that can hold its own against the usual suspects in commander like Steel Hellkite would be a great addition.

K34 nah, the Viashino are an already-established tribe, I don't think they changed anything to dinosaurs other than generic tribes like "Lizard" or "Beast" or stuff. As for the original question, I would like to see some more utility dinos as well, maybe a Tim or a decent token-producer.

It's clear to me that Dinos will continue to be pretty pushed. Obviously, not every Dino will be strong, since WotC needs to preserve balance in Limited, but I think we'll see some more top-end Dinos with aggressive/midrange utility. Your green artifact hate dino seems the most likely to me -- we've already got Deathgorge for grave hate, so it reduces the chances of another gy hate card. And the Mindclaw effect seems like a flavor fail.

If anything, I think we may see some stronger Enrage triggers and build-arounds. I highly doubt we'll see U and/or B Dinos, although it's possible there's a Zombie Dino in B, or a Leviathan Dinosaur in U...but likely just one of each.

Some RG aggro dinosaur with enrage: "whenever ~ is dealt damage, it deals 1 to target creature or player" seems plausible. Also, some enchantment with " whenever a creature etbs, ~ deals 1 damage to it" would be cool. Might also work as a creature.

@K34, that would have been hilarious!

@LittleBlueHero and landofMordor: You're probably right with another gy hate dino being unlikely :/

I would also really like a Gruul Ragebeast as a dinosaur. That would be a great synergy for enrage. Or a dinosaur with a decent enrage ability and an etb-fight built into it!

"Dinosaurs you control have deathtouch". Unlikely? Sure. Incredibly powerful? Definitely.

Dinosaur Egg - G

Creature - Dinosaur

Defender

At the beginning of each upkeep but an incubation counter on Dinosaur Egg.

When Dinosaur Egg dies search your library for a dinosaur card with converted mana cost equal to or less than the number of incubation counters on it and put it on to the battlefield.

0/3

I'm really hoping for Enrage in a big way, I liked Emerge a lot and I don't think there was enough of it so I'm keen to get more of another mechanic I like.

I wish if they were goig to do dinosaurs they would go with a primal theme with tribal riders and Shamman and not focus on pirates. The two themes are in my opinion kind of strange together and I am hoping to see an introduction of a thunder lizard worshiping people and a Sarkan Vol type planewalker for Dinosaur instead of Dragons.

Need a big red T Rex 7\7 with afflict 5 or something maybe with menace or trample. A big baddy

I don't know if we'll get any dinosaurs, I'm not sure what would make them unless they were zombies, but could have some of the aquatic dinosaurs in them. Another dino-lord is a possibility since after Ixalan block, we might not see dinos again for quite some time.

I definitely expect to see more human-dino combo creatures, such as Huatli on a 3/5 hasty body that either pings something as it enters or gains you life at either RRW1 or RWW1. I could also see there being a dino that buffs other humans, to turn around and make the Pridecallers and huntmasters legit threats.

Also, we need Compy's. Compsognathus are the little tiny dinos that travel in packs, so maybe...

Kinjali's Compy's 3GG 1/1 trample haste

whenever any # of Kinjali's Compy's dies, create a token thats a copy of it. That token enters with a # of +1/+1 counters on it equal to the number of Kinjali's Compy's that died this turn and has all abilities of Kinjali's Compy's.

@HeavyR they probably don't want to make a creature that goes infinite on its own with a sac outlet

HAHAHA shows you what i know about magic...idk make it Pack Rat but with dinosaurs.

What about Craterhoof Behemoth for dinosaurs? I would slam dunk that into my deck

October 24, 2017 6:03 p.m.

The legendary dinos we havent seen, Kinjalla, Ixalli, Tilonalli should be sick

October 24, 2017 11:53 p.m.

Ixalli's Keeper, Kinjalli's Caller have them in the art

@HeavyR For a swarm of dinos on a card I'd rather see something like:

Raptor Pack 2RR

2/1

haste

When Raptor Pack attacks, create a token that's a copy of it tapped and attacking

October 25, 2017 12:37 a.m.

Bxbx says... #23

@Jimmy_Chinchila: Cool, I didn't know that. Are they mentioned in the story?

@jchudz: I think, that card would be too strong, even stronger than pack rat because they already double on turn 4 and their number grows exponentially without a manacost to pay. The need to attack won't be that big of a drawback because there will be enough situations where the op does not have enough blockers. But maybe if it additionally costs 2-4 mana for a copy it would be okay

October 25, 2017 3:02 a.m.

Bxbx says... #24

A swarm of raptors could also simply be a Beetleback Chief style of card. Maybe a 2/2 body that brings 2x 2/2 token with it for 6 or mana

October 25, 2017 3:05 a.m.

Ranging Raptors is technically a swarm of raptors. Though I can't look at the art without thinking the dinosaur they are attacking is the main focus. Real missed opportunity art direction wise.

October 25, 2017 10:57 a.m.

LittleBlueHero: same here...it's hard to unsee if you ever have seen it.

More legendary dinosaurs? Hell, yeah! And i thought the three avatar would take the place of these.

Id like to see more white dinos, specifically more of a mid range. definitely more dinomagic. Those spells are fun and cool. If I was asking for more, Id say a way to flip more cards, kinda like Shore Keeper but for red or green dinos. Other than that, goblin and human tribes that run with the dinos, maybe a consume mechanic that lets the dinos power up by eating things like allies.
