Possibility of Another Snow Set?

What do you guys think about the possibility of another Snow Set? I know that a good deal of people think that Coldsnap was pretty dumb/lame and didn't have great mechanics. However, I think nowadays Wizards could really do something neat with snow, and that could possibly add another level of depth to the game. I would just like to hear some opinions for the fun of it.

If so, it could be a story/background around Marit Lage??? Maybe a Dark Depths reprint? A Marit Lage planeswalker??? MORE LORE = MORE FUN!!!

I loved coldsnap. Some of the mechanics were mediocre, but they really did a good overall job.

Snow duals are fine for edh :-). I actually really like Coldsnap, alot of the cards are unique and some are extremely powerful, especially some of the commanders. Its a bit like future sight in my opinion for unique cards and mechanics. I would love another snow set personally.

Fetch able snow duals would make snow commander decks a viable possibility outside monocolored decks.

Coldsnap was a pretty delicious set. It might be a while until another snow set comes out since we already have the next block starting with BFZ and so the lore would have to match, but it does seem like a fun idea. Maybe a second Ice Age?

Sort of related question: Why is Dark Depths $50? Was Coldsnap a really unopened set? It sees no play in Modern for obvious reasons. It can see play as part of a combo in Legacy, but it is not a legacy staple. It is at half the price of Force of Will!

bigguy99 says... #12

Besides just being cool and hard to find, it's the main win condition of a rather strong Legacy deck, which you touched on. That's more than enough of a reason to keep it high. Also, people just don't want to drop the price of it - partly why JTMS is still $90.

Philliam Well I mean, they say they can't reprint Volcanic Islands and friends, they didn't say anything about Snowy Volcanic Islands :D

Dark Depths + Thespian's Stage is a potent Legacy combo. Also Depths + Vampire Hexmage. I run the former in 12 Post.

I think that, overall, MTG has improved since Coldsnap, and would hope that if a return or a new themed set were to occur, it would also be an improvement. I have nostalgia over Ice Age, which was much better than Homelands and Forgotten Empires. And Force of Will was from Alliances, where Balduvian Horde was the chase rare at the time. FoW was worth like a buck or two, if that.

MaRo recently said that if he had to pick one coldsnap mechanic to bring back it would be snow.

TehCoopeh, the reserved list also means no functional reprints.

May 20, 2015 10:56 p.m.

SimicPower says... #18

Femme_Fatale: If it's snow, it is not technically "functional".

May 20, 2015 11:02 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #19

It's a functional reprint. If it can do the same things as the previous cards, then it is a functional reprint. Snow basic lands can be replaced for the originals at any point in time, those are functional reprints.

SimicPower says... #20

"A card is considered functionally identical to another card if it has the same card type, subtypes, abilities, mana cost, power, and toughness." - Official Reprint Policy

I suppose you could be right, though the wording is a little unclear.

It's not like Wizards would ever want to bring those lands into Modern, even if they could. If dual lands weren't on the reserve list, I doubt we would have seen any more printings anyway, maybe besides Judge Promos.

TehCoopeh says... #21

They have to reprint them someday, or legacy is going to up and die.

May 20, 2015 11:29 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #22

They won't TehCoopeh. Vintage and legacy will go on through MTGO. That's how WotC will keep MTGO alive. They only time they'll reprint reserved list material is when MTG starts to be on the verge of dying.

TehCoopeh says... #23

But MTGO is stupid :(

I'd imagine that the closest you'll ever get to a semi-functional ABUR dual reprint would be dual-lands with basic land types and entering untapped, but being legendary.

And I don't even think that that's likely. EDH would go apeshit for it though.

May 23, 2015 2:07 a.m.

Legacy is alive and well in larger cities. Star City Games hosts competitive events IRL. Vintage has a smaller following.

And the closest we have to a ABUR dual reprint was the RTR block shock land reprint. I don't foresee the duals getting reprinted ever.

You forget that ice age pioneered snow covered lands, and was a redemptive set. WOTC nearly lost the franchise with FE and Ice Age really caught people's imagination.

I'd like a snow covered mechanic explored in greater detail. Maybe frost covered mana symbols could only be played with snow covered lands. And there was so much of the story left untold... but now that Dominiara has been trashed maybe it's time we take a sneak peak back into olden times

Sleazebag says... #27

I don't understand all the people asking for snow duals.

It will NEVER happen in a standard set. If only because it would destroy modern.

There's a microscopic chance of it happening in a non-standard/modern legal supplemental product (Maybe even an un set), but not a chance of it happening in a block.

Battle for Zen should be a snow set. Full art snow lands, Shazam! Snowfall mechanic, Boom! And railguns, Shapow!
