Griselbrand! Dormi Rade? STOIC ANGEL?!?
wtf
Anybody else think the art for the new Serum Visions was supposed to be Gitaxian Probe...?
March 6, 2017 9:20 p.m.
Not at all.
There's serum injections poking into that creature and its eyes are glowing. It's having Serum Visions.
A Gitaxian Probe is more of a small spy, or even more appropriate, a periscope. (new headcanon: Gitaxian probes are based on/are Memnarch's repurposed loci.)

So does anyone think anything will change for the B&R announcement when this set comes out?
March 7, 2017 7:57 a.m.
Sooooooooooooooooooooooo glad we will finally have a new Snapcaster.

Just for the reprint or do you like what I would consider to be the boring, generic art?

Why? I understand that the card is good, and that the deck can be problematic, but a creature that only gets good as your life total gets low probably isn't the culprit. Especially a creature that has been around for so long, and who hasn't suddenly gained a new form of interaction. It's not like Death's Shadow is working any differently today than is was yesterday, so I don't think there are sufficient enough grounds for a ban.

If you are worried about deaths shadow you should probably run any of the plethora of removal spells that get rid of it.
If there is a deck I'm tired of seeing it's bant eldrazi. Or mono blue tron.
March 7, 2017 5:39 p.m.
Honestly yeah. It dies to fatal push and and path. It dies to the removal that handles the other big threat in that deck as in Goyf.

BlueMageBrandon, yes, I did completely forget about that card, because it is a common and because it is the only card in the set that cares about gates. Why would WotC include all ten guildgates to support only that creature (unless there are more about which I am forgetting)?
On a different subject, this set seems to have been very well-received, thus far, so I believe that it is safe to presume that there shall be a fourth Modern Masters, but how likely is it that there shall be a second Eternal Masters? I know that many players, including myself, would be very pleased if that set became a recurring product.
March 7, 2017 8:41 p.m.
I wonder why they didn't for fun add in Maze's End for the set, it could have been just downgraded to a rare. Seems almost a shame after they do all the guildgates and not it.
March 7, 2017 9:06 p.m.
Because the gates are for mana fixing, not the gimmick. Honestly, they could have just had the tapped life lands, but either way, maze's end is a junk card that you can not reliably draft nor win with in a draft setting.

Just like to point out that the third row of cards on mythic spoilers (Terminus, Cyclonic Rift, Damnation, Blood Moon, and Scavenging Ooze) could be a cycle of destructive circles. Terminus is a circular beam coming from a circular hole in the sky and everything else has a big, destructive circular something right in the center of the art, even Scavenging Ooze.
March 9, 2017 11:10 a.m.
demonicgrizzly says... #16
that may or may not be a coincidence.
i wouldn't call scooze a circle of destruction, though.

I just realized how similar the art on Damnation/Wrath of God is to Blood Moon.
March 9, 2017 2:24 p.m.
demonicgrizzly says... #18
damnation and wrath of god make sense, as i believe that they are time-shifted version of the same card (someone correct me if i am wrong)
blood moon is kind of a wrath for lands (kind of), so it makes sense. at least in my head.
March 9, 2017 2:29 p.m.
RazortoothMtg says... #19
Damnation is the colorshifted Wrath of God, so they are supposed to looks similar, I was just saying I never noticed their similarity to Blood Moon, which I don't think has any actual reason to look so similar.

So are they going to print this to demand or are they going to keep this run very limited like the other Modern Masters sets?
March 13, 2017 10:18 a.m.
chaosumbreon87 says... #26
MM has always been limited print run so I'm just going to pick up the things I need instead of buying boxes. (playset of each fetch, playset of snappy, etc) Still ends up cheaper than the Expected return from buying boxes and playing the pack lottery (not to say I wont spin this lottery a couple of times but i'm more focused on getting the wants first).
March 13, 2017 10:29 a.m.
GeminiSpartanX says... #27
I hear it will be the largest run yet of a MM product, but still limited in it's print run.
March 13, 2017 11:23 a.m.
I can still buy MM2, so if MM3 is gonna have a even larger print its gonna be easy to get a hold of :)
March 13, 2017 12:53 p.m.
GeminiSpartanX says... #30
smackjack- MM2 wasn't as well received as a set though, with most of its value being in the mythic slots. MM3 seems much better received, and there's plenty of valuable rares along with a few nice uncommons. Buying boxes of MM2 was more of a lottery, whereas more stores will likely crack open boxes of MM3 since it's a safer investment. It's tough to tell if you'll be able to find as many MM3 boxes 2 years down the road from now compared to MM2 since I think most people recognize it as a better set.

chaosumbreon87 says... #31
Lets see if I can put this in simpler terms. With any set theres going to be a limit of quantity that WotC can print. This holds even more true for limited print run sets such as MM sets. This sets an upper limit to stock, and why boxes tend to hold value after years of being out of print.
Now to the calculations:
generally, buying boxes will give a lesser return value than buying singles.
The economics that players care about is how much money you expect to gain or lose from buying a box. Without going into specifics, the expected value of a box of MM3 is $119.90. use whatever conversion to other currency if applicable. Generally you want to pay less than or equal to this price, otherwise its not as likely to make back profit.
for a somewhat more in depth look into the numbers:

GeminiSpartanX says... #32
I think you meant to type $219.90 if you're referring to the goldfish article. ;)

Yep. Thank ramen, xenagos or whatever god you may, that i posted the link with the math. Point still stands with the different cost applied
March 13, 2017 3:57 p.m.
I got my 8 boxes at 200 each with no tax or shipping cost to me. So I think I'll at least break even. I need a linvala, multiple copies of damnation, multiples of each fetch, and a lot of the uncommons for ed purposes (like signets, paths, etc) so I thought why not blow my tax return.
March 13, 2017 4:03 p.m.
March 22, 2017 9:04 a.m.
Lucky you Argeaux, now that's a mythic I had actually wanted, instead I get a Past in Flames, Sphinx's Revelation, Domri Rade and Craterhoof Behemoth.

I drafted on Saturday and my rares were Cavern of Souls, Marsh Flats, got past an Abrupt Decay, and then in my last pack opened a Tarmogoyf. My prize packs also had a Scalding Tarn, Basilisk Collar, and 2 Inquisition of Kozilek. Needless to say I was very satisfied, especially because I never get lucky like that in any type of limited event.
The funniest thing was that my buddy had just bought a box of Japanese Eternal Masters and he had me open up his first pack due to my hot streak...It was a Force of Will.
March 22, 2017 9:43 a.m.
I drafted this past Monday and went on to pull: Tarmogoyf, followed by Verdant Catacombs and finally a foil Craterhoof Behemoth. I only came 4th though, out of 6, but that's the best I've ever done in a draft so feeling pretty proud considering what I was up against. Oh and my prize pack had Damnation.
Hell, I got more value out of that draft than my entire box XD
March 22, 2017 6:56 p.m.
I came 5th out of 19 players at the one draft I went too. All I got was a Craterhoof Behemoth from that though (Could have been worse for sure but I was hoping for a bit better). Probably going to go to another one though soon possibly.
March 22, 2017 7:20 p.m.
I went 1-2, but got Marsh Flats and Cavern of Souls not bad at all
March 23, 2017 8:56 a.m.
Went 2-0-1 (Intentional draw) with esper control splashing for Bonfire of the Damned. Pulled Marsh Flats for the draft and got nothing of note in the prize packs

I went 2-1 with my draft deck here, which I thought was the bomb. Only lost out to a nut-drafted esper blink deck with resto-angel and Mistmeadow Witch eternally blinking Dinrova Horror and the white splicer.
I bought only one pack afterwards and it happened to have Blood Moon and foil Scalding Tarn. It made my day ;)
March 23, 2017 9:55 a.m.
Split a box with my friend.
The best I get in my half is Marsh Flats and Damnation. Meh.
He pulls a Craterhoof Behemoth, Verdant Catacombs, Linvala, Keeper of Silence, and a FOIL Cavern of Souls.
I picked the wrong half of that box.

More good news! I went to my 2nd MM3 draft yesterday, and proceeded to open another Snapcaster Mage in pack 1, then in pack 3 I see a foil Tarmogoyf AND an Arid Mesa!!! I immediately drop from the draft to keep the goyf and fetch, and declare myself winner of the draft by default. :)
Notable pulls from all 7 packs of MM3 that I've opened so far (no other packs opened as of yet): Scalding Tarn, Tarmogoyf, 2x Snapcaster Mage, Arid Mesa, Blood Moon.
March 26, 2017 9:08 p.m. Edited.

Gratz. I love the feeling when you see a good rare and then you move to the Foil and you see such a bomb. (Happened to me with Eternal Masters. Opened a random booster and got a Karakas, already lost my shit. then got to the foil and it was a Force of Will).
At the beginning of next month ill buy 6 more boosters of MM3 to booster battle with a friend. I hope I can break at least even.
March 27, 2017 3:38 a.m.
Wow GeminiSpartanX, I have opened up 16 packs so far and what I have is terrible. From splitting a box all I got was a Verdant Catacombs, 1x Path to Exile a foil Serum Visions and a Domri Rade...
The other half of the box was simply an Arid Mesa, Death's Shadow, Grafdigger's Cage, Past in Flames yeah you should get the idea.
Then from a draft a Craterhoof Behemoth and that was it. My individual pack I bought was simply a Restoration Angel.
March 27, 2017 1:34 p.m.
Ok so this is my haul from Modern Masters after 3 drafts, and a box... how'd I do? I spent 165gbp on my box, then 30gbp on each draft, so 255gbp in total
- Basilisk Collar
- Scalding Tarn
- Phantasmal Image
- Might of Old Krosa x3
- Inquisition of Kozilek x2
- Verdant Catacombs x2
- Abrupt Decay
- Serum Visions x3
- Craterhoof Behemoth
- Tarmogoyf
- Misty Rainforest
- Sphinx's Revelation
- Damnation
- Entreat the Angels
- Temporal Mastery
- Path to Exile
- Spell Pierce
- a bunch of signets that I've been after
