M16

No, it hasn't been spoiled. I wanna discuss what we think or hope we'll see in the last Core set in the history of Magic.

Will they reprint Lightning Bolt ? Birds of Paradise ? Day of Judgment ? Will we see a full set of dual lands? Will there be loads of dragons in the wake of Khans block? Will it even be called Magic 2016? Will they reprint Grizzly Bears ???

miracleHat says... #2

I thought that m15 was the last core set. For m16, i hope that wizards will reprint the most influential and awesome cards in all of the core sets. Lightning Bolt , Primeval Titan and so on...

We will likely see Giant Growth , Giant Spider , Disenchant , and some cool new Basic Lands like Mountain and Island .

Fingers crossed for Naturalize

Nah, Grizzly Bears is too OP for limited formats, and Wizards knows it. They've toned it down a bit with Runeclaw Bear to balance the color pie a little. Something something also Storm Crow blah blah I'm really tired sorry

October 17, 2014 1:14 a.m.

Birds of Paradise would be powerful following a wedge and would likely replace Sylvan Caryatid . But it may be too good, same with Lightning Bolt (which would see a rarity change perhaps if re-printed). I am all for dragons, personally. I think it may be more of a bridge between blocks than previous sets though. My personal wish? Bring back samurai.

October 17, 2014 1:16 a.m.

VampireArmy says... #8

I remember them saying along the lines that they were pretty much done with "3 for 1's" being printed in standard. Bolt is an oppressive burn spell in a vacuum as it kills literally all things you're playing t1-3 and that makes drafting hell or something.

October 17, 2014 1:23 a.m.

CrazyLittleGuy says... #9

Aw come on Samurai are just so bad mechanically though. I don't think Birds would replace Caryatid, they'd likely be run side-by-side. The downside of a Birds reprint is that it makes the Jeskai Ascendancy Standard combo deck a little too good. Speaking of which, it might break the format a little, but if Exalted returns as a mechanic it might include the Noble Hierarch reprint people have been clamoring for, make Modern a little more accessible. Seems to be the theme lately anyway. I guess having Prowess and Exalted in a format together is a little awkward as well, so it's doubtful from multiple fronts.

Titans would be pretty sweet tho. BOP is probably a no-go, considering temples will still be around alongside caryatid. I'm really hoping for bolt, even at uncommon. M11 was a long time ago.

We saw the Souls in M15, which are sort of like toned down Titans. I don't think souls will get reprints, nobody really liked them too much. Titans would guarantee that the set sells a lot.

Checklands might be back, even though it's only been one core set break. I'm hoping they do some iconic creature types - dragons, angels, demons, leviathans, beasts.

October 17, 2014 1:29 a.m.

Bushido wasn't that bad. Birds would replace Caryatids because of rotation, otherwise Birds would replace Mystic instead. Turns one and two instant mana fixing? That's not likely to happen.

Goody says... #12

Exalted and prowess... could be a crazy enough thing for wizards to do. Probably not in core set though, but maybe in the block after m16. I'd love a hierarch reprint, my hope that it'll happen is the main reason I didn't trade my Tarmogoyf for 3 of them.

Cards I want to see...

Storm Crow

Willow Faerie

Chimney Imp

Charging Badger

Grizzly Bears

Lightning Bolt

... However, I'd like to see all of these as mythic rares with foil full-art.

October 17, 2014 1:33 a.m.

Goody says... #14

Willow Faerie is really good, early green flier that can benefit fromall of green's pump? It would break limited, mono green would definitely be a good deck. Take all the faeries and any efficient green creature, attack for days

its been way to long I need a Shock reprint so badly like you have no idea, there is no other good one drop burn spell i can use in standard.

It would be cool to see all the classics reprinted, shivan dragon, BoP, Wrath of God, full set of pain lands or check lands, but some of this stuff is too powerful IMO, IE Bop and WoG, but it could still happen. I really can't see Noble Hierarch ever seeing a standard set again, especially if BoP is already a no go. Might be a last hurrah though, who knows!

October 17, 2014 2:48 a.m.

Death_The_Kid says... #18

I hope they get outsiders to design cards again. I want creative flavor cards. Mmm the flavor from M15 was great with Hot Soup tasted so good.

-Fulcrum says... #19

Still hoping they name is Omega or something like that, as the last core set. Alpha was technically a core set, so it's justifiable to name the final core set Omega.

I would love a Disenchant reprint. Could also be an optimal time for more full art basics. I kinda wanna see Standard come close to the power level of Modern, with cards like Lightning Bolt and Mana Leak , but still in check with the rotation.

October 17, 2014 3:58 a.m.

Since M16 will the final core set, I can see them going out with a bang. I'd love to see them reprint some of the biggest cards we have had in core sets. Hell even some modern staples would be great.

pookypuppy6 says... #21

I'd like the returning mechanic to be a bit bonkers, though they tend to go with pretty basic ones like Bloodthirst and Exalted. How would people like to see Proliferate? Proliferate was a pretty popular mechanic, fits with some Heroic and Abzan themes decently enough and is just all-round cool. It might have been a year too recent though.

Maybe seeing as they brought back Exalted from Alara block they might look into Zendikar block for a mechanic. Kicker/multikicker? Rebound? Plenty to choose from.

I wonder if this will really be the last Core Set. I know the decision's been made and all, but some fair distance down the road, they may decide that it's worth printing them again. I doubt it, but it's possible, I suppose.

Anyhow. I wanna see Titans. I wanna see Bolt. I wanna see Jace Beleren . I wanna see Damnation again for crying out loud.

But seriously. Giant Spider .

Named_Tawyny says... #23

I've got my money on it being a 'Standard Masters' type set. The best/most loved/interestingest cards from the past 22 years - probably with a strong focus on some that we haven't seen since Unlimited.

Healing Salve here we come!

Eff it. Last Core Set in a long while because Wizards don't see the point of them anymore? Let's make this into a Homelands-style disaster!

Reprint crap by the truckton like Spell Snip , Cradle to Grave and have Lizard Warrior be 1st pickable. Up the complexity unnecessarily with cards like Force of Savagery and Spinal Parasite . Reprint Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded instead of any Chandra reiterations Just go balls-to-the-wall power suckage Kamigawa-style except for some carelessly thrown in power cards like Skullclamp and Bloodbraid Elf .

October 17, 2014 7:36 a.m.

Lhurgyof says... #27

Disenchant in the new frame would be nice. I'm hoping to see some cards that have been out of core sets for a while. Maybe even wrath of god.

I know! Lets bring back banding!

October 17, 2014 8:52 a.m.

JakeHarlow says... #29

Banding was so OP. I almost always build around that awesome mechanic. It's especially amazing in Standard right now.

October 17, 2014 8:54 a.m.

jr92_2000 says... #30

It would be really nice to see the classic spells/creatures return in M16. I'm guessing they'll do that to some extent, but things that don't jive with the new slower Standard decree will be kept out (Lightning Bolt for example seems very unlikely).

October 17, 2014 9:34 a.m.

Panda213 says... #31

Just do a reprint of Alpha and call it good, I'm sure nobody would mind

October 17, 2014 9:40 a.m.

capriom85 says... #32

Power 9 and Duals...new, full arts on all of them...and then I wake up and what I really expect from M16 is a farewell with reprints that give a throwback to all the other core sets before it. We will probably see something like Titans to commemorate M12, or possibly even Thundermaw Hellkite to make M13 be remembered a bit. Who knows....it may just be another core set that no one opens much of. Or maybe we get the other 5 Fetches in the Core?

October 17, 2014 9:52 a.m.

DarkHero says... #33

All those cards you suggested would be too good to be in standard again. Not even to mention being in standard AT THE SAME TIME. Standard would instantly become modern and at the point why even bother. You might see one of them. They would never do all of them at once. Standard would be completely broken for a really long time.

October 17, 2014 10:08 a.m.

What if, follow me here...we get a new Tibalt? Or a new Planeswalker altogether? I'd like a Walker themed outro.

October 17, 2014 10:14 a.m.

@pookypuppy6Samurai didn't suck. Kamigawa had powerful cards, cards that were swiftly banned. Kamigawa biggest hang up was Wizards wanting to make everything Legendary.

October 17, 2014 10:19 a.m.

pookypuppy6 says... #36

@Jonathannoob: Though you're probably right to correct me on the actuality of the sets in Kamigawa block, it is a common conception that Kamigawa was a generally underpowered set (partly because of the lgendaryness, partly due to insular mechanics, and also because of percieved overcostedness) Of course that doesn't mean all of it was so, such as said banned cards. I never mentioned Samurai as being bad; they are pretty good and I enjoyed the Samurai deck in DotP 2014.

Also, a new Tibalt would be kickass. I don;t see him being made Black-Red in a core set, though the last three core sets have seen two multicolour planeswalkers in it. Black Red would suit Tibalt, like his Duel Deck.

Now excuse me while I make a Modern-legal list for a Crap Cube. I just really want to draft crap like Cradle to Grave .

October 17, 2014 11:04 a.m.

I agree with you mostly. It was insular and did have overcosted cards as well. But it's unfortunate that it overshadows the good of the block so much. People tend to forget Magic was a slower game at the time as well. Naturally its not as "strong" as it once was.

October 17, 2014 11:11 a.m.

Alara Tri Lands and Progenitus would be fun.

PreZchoICE1 says... #39

There are two cards I dont understand people 'clamoring' for. Damnation and Noble Hierarch. they werent printed THAT long ago. I can see people clamoring for things like dual lands but GD wait another 7 years ppl. Look at the length of time between the old fetches and their reprint in Khans. In 5 years ppl will be clamoring for a Dig Through Time reprint. Being a player who started right around the time The Dark was released I cant help but feel that younger players are spoiled with the cards that wizards releases now. GD I played through Fallen Empires, Ice Age, Homelands! Quit ur bitchin, lol!

I can see wizards making 2016 a 'timeshifted' type set, commemorating some of the best cards from Magic's history. I think a cool idea would be to have it released like Conspiracy in that it wouldnt be standard legal, thus freeing wizards from the constraints of being able to print things they normally wouldnt want in the standard environment.

October 17, 2014 11:29 a.m.

pookypuppy6 says... #40

@Jonathannoob: tt IS a shame! I for one really like a lot of the cards in Kamigawa block, especially the art and themes (which is also a reason why we may never see Kamigawa again, due to the fact the Eastern themes didn't resonate with the Western audience).

@PreZchoICE1: IA Timeshifted-esque set would be wicked. Something like that would rival the awesomeness of M13 and M15 if it can pull it off. I WANT REPRINTS OF Rewind AND Deadly Recluse !!

I'd love to see landfall in M16 to squeeze goodness out of the fetchlands. Maybe bring back the allies for a hurrah instead of slivers.

Maybe get some Squadron Hawk s back into circulation...

PreZchoICE1 says... #42

I dont think I've ever had as much fun playing a boardwipe against anything other than Allies. I absolutely despise Allies. I despise them more than I despise Slivers, and thats really saying something.

maybe itll be something to commemorate all the core sets, because itll be the last one. Storm Crow Titans and whatever else will let core sets go out with a bang

October 17, 2014 3:53 p.m.

I'm guessing Birds of Paradise could be reprinted since they need a 5 color mana dork after the wedge set and where caryatid will disappear.

October 17, 2014 5:43 p.m.

nayrash5 says... #49

I hope that all 4 of the Player Made cards and all of the Worlds Winner Cards make a return... and no, this isnt me hoping for a Bob reprint, I think all of these cards would be cool to have as a last hurrah for a Core Set.

October 18, 2014 1:26 a.m.

Ultimaodin says... #50

I honestly would love a new Tibalt. Like a new one that is Good, similar to how new Nissa is wicked. The should also do a new Nico Bolas. then for the other 4 walkers we could get Tezzeret as blue, white a new Gideon and black and green we can have... Vraska because eff it.

Also Contraptions and Fortifications.
