Jace Colour Change

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

Posted on Feb. 2, 2015, 11:08 a.m. by Maltanis

I remember reading about Tamiyo being the go to blue walker for WotC in future, so this means Jace is going to fall out of the lime light.

I had a thought that due to his involvement with the guildpact and thus the Azorious, would we potentially see Jace turning into a BW walker? We are missing one at the moment, and would be a natural progression in my mind.

Thoughts?

That's meant to be UW walker......

I would LOVE to see a non-Venser planeswalker. Jace or not. Venser just isn't controlley enough for me.

VampireArmy says... #4

There was some sort of lore during DOTP 2012 that he might choose to either incorporate black or white into his magic sometime down the road

February 2, 2015 11:12 a.m.

Maltanis says... #5

I hope we get one. Sorely lacking a good UW walker, Venser has never been a threat for me in any of the games I've faced against him.

TheAnnihilator says... #6

Please don't make Jace a mage. Then he would have to be a mill planeswalker. I can't use that!

SpartanCEL says... #7

If I want any kind of walker I want a that isn't suicidal dragon tribal:p. But white sounds more his thing in my opinion

Bro he's already the mill walker what are you smoking

February 2, 2015 11:19 a.m.

Maltanis says... #9

We've just had Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver in Theros, so I doubt they will release another walker so soon, especially a mill one, as that's basically what Ashiok was.

Any thoughts on what kind of abilities a Jace would have?

jace already is a mill planes walker... TheAnnihilator

It would be cool to see a Jace. Maybe something like Jace, Something Azorius 2 uncoloured a blue and a white. Starting loyality 3

+1: Tap upto 1 target creature it doesnt untap during its controller's next up tap step.

-2: Draw a card and you gain two life

-6: Tap each permanent target player control. They skip their next two untap steps.

February 2, 2015 11:30 a.m.

square711 says... #12

Probably lifegain? A Venser's Journal-like ability would fit the theme, though I don't see it being particularly useful, even in a lifegain deck.

As for his ultimate... "target opponent draws four cards, then reveals his or her hand. You choose up to four nonland cards from it. The chosen cards cannot be cast for the rest of the game". I know, not a chance in hell this is happening.

Jace at Blue-White could be cool, but I think that pushing in a white mechanic to him will be tricky to make fit flavourfully withoiut seeming glaringly out of place with previous iterations. Jace has alwaysn decisively being a memory-manipulating mind mage even with his hints of "ooh, will be go good, or will he go baaad".. Milling and card draw and stuff is just his jam flavourfully.

Mabe a restriction on your opponent casting spells? Like soe sort of Chancellor of the Annex style ability. It could work in blue and white and is pretty controll-y, but would have to be very carefully worked.

I too, would love to see a new Black-Red walker. I think a Black-Red Tibalt with a torture thee (like his Duel Deck) would be awesome.

February 2, 2015 11:33 a.m.

Maltanis says... #14

LioAME3 - I don't see the +1 being a thing as that's what Ajani Vengeant has on him, although it DOES fit into more of what blue can do these days.

February 2, 2015 11:34 a.m.

square711 says... #15

And I do think a UB Jace could be done, and still be completely different from Ashiok. Just imagine:

-8: You get an emblem with "whenever an opponent casts a spell, you may discard a card. If you do, counter that spell".

Alright, I'll stop.

February 2, 2015 11:36 a.m.

LioAME3 says... #16

Maltanis shit I totally forgot about that. I was thinking about controlling stuff and thought Frost Breath is always fun. Maybe he's plus could be more like a detain ability?? assuming this incarnation appears in ravnica

February 2, 2015 11:40 a.m.

Maltanis says... #17

That -8 would be freaking amazing! I don't even think it's that overpowered, maybe make it discard a non-land card, knock the cost up to say -10 to really make it a challenge. But once you get it, bam, game changer BUT not unbeatable (until I play Consecrated Sphinx :P )

ppledger says... #18

If anything, the precedent is there for a UW Jace. Unfortunately. Not that I don't like the idea of a UW Jace, it's just that the precedent sucks: Jace's completely crap UW mill deck from the first DOTP. D:

jr92_2000 says... #19

Would love to see a good Jace, but I'm guessing he'll stay mono blue.

February 2, 2015 11:47 a.m.

slovakattack says... #20

UW Jace:

(would probably cost something like 5-6 CMC)

+X ability: Draw a card and gain 2 life.

-X ability: put any number of cards from your hand into your library, shuffle, then draw that many cards

Ultimate -X ability: You get an emblem that says "Whenever you cast a spell, you may draw a card. If you do, gain 2 life."

Kinda boring, but there it is.

February 2, 2015 11:48 a.m.

square711 says... #21

Yeah, it's powerful as heck, but still beatable, especially with a few tweaks to make it harder to activate.

In fact, at first I was going to say "counter that spell unless its controller discards a card", but I guess that's too much. I mean, if you're in topdeck mode when this hits, the game is literally over. Easiest ban of all time.

Hjaltrohir says... #22

The Annihilator UB isn't only about mill! If he was UB he might not be mill, maybe control?

February 2, 2015 1:29 p.m.

pookypuppy6 says... #23

@awesomeguy37: Again, Jace is more the memory-mage fellow, so if he goes UB it's hard to ignore that he's the mill guy. But not only have we had Ashiok, but Jace, Memory Adept was really the definitive mill-Jace, so I guess

It'd make more sense to go WU than BU to me. We haven't had a WU walker that wasn't a build-around like Venser, the Sojourner, and we know Wizards appreciate the completionist-ness of its player=base. They won't just throw one out willy-nilly though, they took their time with Ral Zarek and Kiora.

February 2, 2015 1:34 p.m.

Hjaltrohir says... #24

pookypuppy6 im not saying he wouldnt be mill imm saying that everyone instantly associates dimir with milling, think Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas!

February 2, 2015 1:36 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #25

from what I read, there was apparently talk of having Jace, Architect of Thought be . But they decided against it to have Jace feel separate from the guilds. But feels like the best logical extension of Jace's color pie. I wouldn't bet on it anytime soon, but it could happen.

February 2, 2015 2:01 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #26

UW Jace ultimate:

-7: you get an emblem with "whenever an opponent casts a spell, you may tap a nonland permanent you control. if you do, counter the spell unless the opponent pays one mana of the tapped permanent's color."

February 2, 2015 2:57 p.m.

@awesomeguy37
Don't get me wrong, I played Esper control in RTR, and I realize that UB isn't all about mill. However, I am certain that a UB Jace would 100% involve mill. Image the backlash from mill players if he didn't: "You mean mono- Jace, Memory Adept involves mill more than the Dimir version?!" I just want a more playable control planeswalker for modern, preferably mono-blue so I can use it in Jeskai control too.

As of right now, my favorite modern planeswalker is Ajani Vengeant, but my favorite color to play is blue. That's just stupidly messed up.

February 2, 2015 3:03 p.m.

@shinobigarth
Please don't make me more run non-land permanents =D I'd rather be turning Vendilion Clique sideways to put my opponent on a clock than holding it up to counter something unless they pay .

February 2, 2015 3:08 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #29

TheAnnihilator being able to counter anything they play is a biiiig deal.

February 2, 2015 3:44 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #30

plus: vigilance, untapping....

February 2, 2015 3:45 p.m.

@shinobigarth
Yeah, but having a vast amount of untapped non-land permanents in a control style deck is fairly uncommon. Even then, simply Force Spikeing your opponent's card will likely not counter it, so you'd need multiple nonlands to counter something. I just don't really see it happening, tbh -- especially since it's the planeswalker's ult. There are far better options once you get to the stage of the game when you can ult a planeswalker.

Maybe Esper would run make use of the ability with Lingering Souls, but I doubt other styles really could. Not competitively at least.

February 2, 2015 4:57 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #32

then maybe tapping a land to counter instead.

either way UW Jace is by far the most likely scenario if be goes multicolor. UB Jace doesn't make sense and would never happen.

February 2, 2015 6:08 p.m.

@shinobigarth
Yeah, I think that something like that would be good. How about this:

" -6 : You get an emblem that says "Whenever an opponent casts a spell, you may tap any number of lands you control. If you do, counter that spell unless it's controller pays , where X is the number of lands you tapped in this way. (Tapping lands for this ability doesn't add mana to your mana pool.)"

February 2, 2015 6:49 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #34

It should cost more loyalty because of how powerful it is but yeah.

February 2, 2015 7:29 p.m.

jasz says... #35

jace seems to have the most interactions with other plaines walkers from what i can gather in the lore, uw makes sense because of his involvement with the azorious but i could also see ub because of his tryst with liliana which could corrupt him similar to what happened with garruk, ur because of his interactions with chandra and sarkhan in ugins tomb plus i feel like jade/chandra has something going on, or a combo oriented ug would be pretty dope.

but I'm still waiting for planes walkers that are more relevant in commander...

February 4, 2015 1:39 a.m.

Maltanis says... #36

I can't see Jace going UR, he's not got the personality for it. He's too serious for Izzet, he doesn't let his emotions overrule his logical side. UG seems pretty out there as well, I can't see it happening. The fact he has worked with so many different colour orientated walkers sort of pushes him into UW for me, it shows his ability to work with others for the greater good and to further his understanding. I also really doubt we're going to get another "conversion to the dark side" any time soon as we've seen with Liliana/Garruk.

This would be Suweeeet

February 4, 2015 8:29 a.m.

shinobigarth says... #38

white is the only color that makes sense. he wants to keep order and make sure everyone is safe and well at the end of the day especially since now he is tasked with overseeing the wellbeing of the guilds and Ravnica proper basically.

February 4, 2015 1:35 p.m.

Kozelek says... #39

Yea jace will likely go cause when he was dying on ravnica rather than reaching for (remember his girl friend liliana is a mage) he instead reached for to heal himself

February 5, 2015 4:59 p.m.

JohnnyBaggins says... #40

Well, that doesn't work anyways.
If I'm not mistaken, Planeswalkers can only be used in your turn, right?
A countering planeswalker would, therefore, make no sense.

February 8, 2015 8:54 a.m.

Kozelek says... #41

Well the new teferi gives you an emblem that lets you activate planeswalkers at the "speed" of an instant (yea yea I know magic has not had "speeds" sense the 6th ad rule changes where they added "the stack" but Evan now 9 years later I still say "at the speed of an instant")

February 8, 2015 10:18 a.m.

JohnnyBaggins says... #42

Right, I forgot that.
But it seems pretty far fetched to make a planeswalker whose ability only is really useful with a second planeswalker that isn't even in standard or modern.

February 8, 2015 10:33 a.m.

Maltanis says... #43

Oakenwind - We're talking about emblems from the Ultimate ability. So you'd have an emblem with "Counter the first spell an opponent casts each turn"

February 8, 2015 10:33 a.m.

JohnnyBaggins says... #44

Oh, I've been miss-reading stuff heavily. Really sorry.
It's really powerful, so just what you want from a planeswalker ultimate.
I can imagine that, even though I feel like that's a strictly blue emblem. So, generally, for a new mono- Jace all the way, for a or not so much.
For I could imagine 'If the first spell an opponent plays in his or her turn is a noncreature spell, counter that spell. If it is a creature spell, you gain life equal to that creature's toughness.
For I could imagine: "At the beginning of each opponent's unkeep, choose one: - Counter the first spell that this opponent plays this turn; or - This opponent sacrifices a creature
