Ixalan is the Fall Set!

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

In a premiere play announcement, Helene Bergeot announced that the fall set will be named Ixalan. Whether this is a new name for Atlazan or something completely different is up to speculation. My thoughts is that this is an odd time for an announcement of this type and it still seems to be Mesoamerican based.

Thoughts?

I only see the set name, not what the set is based on. What were you basing that on?

pskinn01 -- There were some leaks of "Speculative Packaging" for both Amonkhet/Hour of Devastation and a set called Atlazan and a second set for ATZ called Conquest of Power. Ixalan has that same meso/aztec/mayan feel, that's where people are coming from about it.

Since the new commander product was announced today as well to be Tribal based, I think the next set will have a heavy tribal focus -- That plays into those mesoamerican civilisations really well, and I'd love it if we got human figures who are a different creature type based upon a tribe:

Cats (Jaguars)

Viashino (Dragons)

Snakes

Hound?

Merfolk? (Fish)

Like a creature would be "Snake Warrior" but be a human with a snake skin/look like hybrids or mutations. Easily could have the real creatures as well.

Looking also at the basis of the plane, sacrificial mechanics could also be in.

Bigger question is, if the leaked packs are accurate, will Vraska be a big player on Ixalan?

I am very interested in this, and wondering why WotC revealed only the name of the set and nothing else about it; why would they not wait until the next announcement day?

Does this mean that the images of Atlazan are now confirmed to be fake or inaccurate? I definitely am very eager to learn more about this set.

I think it might be a Return to , or Theros Underworld maybe? Has a very Theros-like name, especially with the "x" in the title (Xenagos, Nyx, etc.) Plus Mark Rosewater insists that we are returning to a plane with the next set, so it's pretty likely. The only flaw I can see with this is having a Theros block with no Gideon. But hey, we got 2 Nissas between 2 blocks, so anything is possible.

Anyone recall the spoiled booster packs for amonkhet and the block after it?

The theme seemed Aztec.

Googled.

It's worth noting that both of those pieces of art of Amonkhet did end up being in the set and therefore weren't mockups. While it is unlikely that that is true all the way through, the Atlazan packaging may still hold some amount of an idea of key artwork for Ixalan.

If this is true then it would appear Vraska and Ajani will be key players; which makes sense given Ajani just joined the gatewatch and is not playing a role in Amonkhet, as well as Mark Rosewater announcing that the Gatewatch planeswalkers will be getting fewer cards in the future.

Could this name be another part of the plane? Maybe similar to the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor aspect, but with Atlanzan being the secret, underwater paradise part of it and this being the general land area?

Skulloelegy, not to sound mean or anything, but we already have snake humans; their called naga(if that's what they're called on the plane). Be great to see them in 2 consecutive sets, maybe with actual synergies, like lords? Really hope this is a new plane based on Central American tribes, not just an add on to another plane.
