is Ixalan a return set?

I thought I read that in general there would be a return block about as often as a block with a new plane.
The last two blocks were new (Kaladesh and Amonkhet). So the next one should be a return. I'm thinking a return to Dominaria. I think that would also tie in to the 25th anniversary. Thoughts?
It's absolutely possible, and you're right in saying that in general, MaRo said that there would be about 50% new blocks and 50% old blocks, but I feel like Wizards would want to make a return to Dominaria a relatively big deal, and not something that they'd release the set name for before the official announcement. (Wow, that was a long sentence.) Maybe the Spring 2018 block?

What I'm trying to say is, don't they always release the set name before the official announcement of the set?

I think they might of released the name of the set hoping people wouldn't figure it out. Like people thinking they renamed the Atlantis themed set. Or it could be the Atlantis themed set is on dominaria. Cause last I heard it was a post destruction wasteland. Maybe the most dominate species is now the menfolk due to the destruction the war with phyrexians had on the plane, and other calamities.

iAzire you may be right, but I don't think so. The only reason they announced Ixalan's name early was because they had to make changes to the tournament rules and couldn't wait until the official Announcement Day which was originally planned for March 31st, but got pushed back to May or June. I remember that they released the key art for Kaladesh (the art that's on the Bundle, Deck Builder's Toolkit and Gift Box) at the same time as they announced that we were going to Kaladesh.

Alright, I have a theory on Ixalan. It is actually a return to... Theros. There are a couple of things that hint at it. Firstly, the name. It clearly has an "x" in it, with is used A TON in Theros. Secondly, the name sounds pretty Greek/Roman. (Just sound it out. Ix-ah-lahn.) Third, Atlantis, in Greek Mythos, was a city that was punished by the Gods for the resident's hubris, and sent underwater. And we have a version of Atlantis in canon on Theros. Here is a quote from the FTV:Annihalation Wrath of God flavor text that describes the events. Legend speaks of the lost coastal polis of Olantin, whose inhabitants hubris enraged the sun god Heliod. Sound a bit familiar? The last thing that sets it off, however, is that in the Atlazan/Conquest of Power booster packs "spoiler" there is a picture of Ajani clearly upset about something, as well as a gorgon who looks similar to Vraska. It would make sense to have those two on Theros, as Gorgons are another staple from Greek Mythology, and Ajani definitely has some unfinished business on Theros.

Ixalan is an entirely new plane. We just had back to back return sets in zendikar and innistrad, we can calm down with the hopeful returns. When something is a return set, you'll know that it is from the title.

New New Phyrexia? Ixalan reminds me of Atraxa, name wise.

Ixalan is NOT A return set. A short while ago the pack art for a couple of upcoming sets was spoiled from a survey put up by wotc. The pack art accurately predicted Amonkhet and also included Hour of Devastation and the next two sets in a block called "Atlazan". If it isn't EXTREMELY OBVIOUS, Ixalan is a renamed version of Atlazan, with nearly the same pronunciation. From the pack art spoilers we can see that the set is MAYAN themed and includes Ajani, Vraska, and a random merfolk.

While they might have just changed the name. The points you make are speculation. It said upcoming sets, not the next two blocks. And if Ixalan is a return set, and the packs had art of plane specific characters, it would make sense not to show them if it was supposed to be a hype thing they planned on doing.

Wotc didn't plan to show the packs arts in the first place. They said as much in a response on twitter.

I think it's a whole new plane, but still I LOVE your idea.
The Olantin-to-Ixalan piece may be a bit of a stretch, but Kytheon-to-Gideon was too, and that worked out :-)
It also fits well into the existing story ... Ajani's appearance and then popping right out again (presumably to prep for rescuing Elspeth) and Gideon getting religious again could lead to a return to There's sooner rather than later.
It also gives me hope that we can shelve Gids for a while and get Elspeth back!
Fun speculation, for sure!

Ceondoc, clayperce, I do not believe that Ixalan has any connection to Theros, but is isntead a renamed version of Atlazan from the leaked images, akin to how WotC registered a trademark for "Warlords of Khanar," but then abandoned it because that name was too similar to Warlords of Draenor by Blizzard Entertainment.
