Pre ordered a box and got to open it today.

Started off lousy, then I crack a Mana Crypt then I get a Wasteland then a top, then a few more lousy Rares, and as I am feeling hopeless crypt foil. Oh lawdy

Bought a box. Pulled a foil Jace. Don't even care about the rest cuz that paid for the box, BUT I also got a foil Enlightened Tutor and Ashnod's Altar and then lots o' decent rares & mythics. Basically everything I wanted except Wasteland, Vampiric Tutor, Natural Order, and Force of Will.

From 9 packs, notable pulls were Force of Will, Regal Force and Toxic Deluge. I mean, the Deluge and the Force are worth more than the packs (all at MSRP), so that's fine by me. The LGS I got them at is also doing an EMA league. That'll be fun.

Oh, and I did one draft and got an Enlightened Tutor and a Cabal Therapy. Also, JC Tao was in my pod.

I didn't do so great in my draft (tried to force esper reanimator, but it didn't work so well). But notable pulls from my buddy's box were Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Wasteland, Toxic Deluge, Sylvan Library, Sneak Attack, Vindicate, Enlightened Tutor, and a bunch of the good commons/uncommons like Chain Lightning and Cabal Therapy. Overall I don't think he made back the MSRP since there wasn't much value in the foils (Invigorate was the only one that stood out to me). It makes me glad I didn't buy a box, even though he opened most of the cards I personally am looking for.

I personally do not like the greedy price gouging, because I cannot now buy packs to get a reasonable card value anymore. What if there was a way to just simmply purchase packs from WotC for MSRP, like MTGO. You do not see price-gouging on magic online.

I ended up getting my box for 280 Canadian and cracked 350 US in mythics and rares... Highlights for me were

Pack 2 - Foil BrainstormFirst pack, middle row - Force of Will with Foil Sneak AttackSecond pack, middle row - Wasteland

Overall - great box.. my buddies got ripped on theirs... nowhere near 250 Canadian in theirs..

Draft was 40 bucks - cracked a vampiric tutor, gamble, isochron scepter and a foil innocent blood... not bad at all.. I had to drop so I didn't build or play

Buddy bought a box for $380 and the highlight was a Mother of Runes foil.

Normally that would suck but with price gouging is getting out of hand this set needs a reprint!

price gouging will always be present because there are too many people with too much money and not enough brains.. If we stopped buying at these outrageous prices, stores would have to do something.. Price fixing is highly illegal and although there's no "proof"... if every store within 100kms of each other is charging basically the same price (which they are), it's still price fixing.. Wizards should cut their supply or something... it's waaaaay out of hand and this set proves it!

You can't actually apply the concept of price gouging or fixing to Magic cards since it's very hard to make a case for them being a necessity. The secondary Magic market follows very simple laws of economics - namely supply, demand and (the big one) speculation.

Anywho - Wizards is very dependent on local games shops since this is where a major percentage of the Magic community gets together to play the game, and WOTC can't make money if nobody plays their game. LGS's also need money to stay in business, and a bunch of people playing Magic in your shop does not make you a wealthy person. Therefore, WOTC releases product that will keep the LGS's in business. This is ALSO part of the reason why WOTC does not sell their product directly. I know it hurts a lot of players to hear that these sets are released for the game shops to make money and not for us to get the reprints we want, but that's how it works.

All this being said, people probably shouldn't be paying $25 for a shiny MoR. Come on folks, donate to a food bank or something if you've got that kind of extra scratch lying around.

But how would I get cool magic cards if I donate my disposable income?

You are mistaken in that there is any speculation for this set. If you buy above MSRP, you are OK with increased prices. In the world of online shopping, you could get boosters delivered to your door at MSRP prices. Do not condone people who would charge more.

Really, sets are released for gameshops to make money? That is no way true - if it were true, WOTC would not set quotas to the shops for the amounts they are getting, plus if an LGS decides to sell an EM pack for 30 bucks, instead of MSRP, Wizards will not see that extra revenue from that shop, nor can they control what their products are sold by independent retailers.WOTC does not engage in price gouging and once more, do not buy packs over MSRP.

Well wizards already participated in their own form of price gouging by making the packs $10 at msrp

That's not price gouging, though. Price gouging is a specific term - what WOTC (and any LGS) is involved in is more accurately named "charging more for a product than I feel like paying."

If WOTC did not set limits on print runs the secondary market would be destroyed, game stores would go out of business, and WOTC would suffer financial damage as they need the LGS's to provide their player base. Sets are designed to keep WOTC in business, they need the LGS's, thus sets are designed to keep LGS's in business.

Speculation is a HUGE part of the secondary market, this set included. People are buying up cards with the hope that they will retain or bring increased value in the future. This is the definition of speculation. Nobody has 300 Chain Lightnings because they have enough decks to warrant them.

If someone is charging above MSRP then by all means do not buy from them. But often someone else will - demand, meet supply.

Sorry for going off-topic. If anyone wants to make a "How the Secondary Market Works" thread I'd be happy to argue about it there! I'll leave this one alone...

F.R.F thanks for breaking it down like that.

The LGS in question has two other large game stores in the area to compete with so now I see the price fixing/gouging for what it really is - survival in a tough economic market.
