Commander 2018

What should the theme of Commander 2018 be?

I would like to see one of two options.

1) dual colored decks led by legendary versions of characters that have only usually been planeswalkers like the Gatewatch and others.

OR

2) three colored decks that focus on groups with lots of flavor. The weatherlight's crew, phyrexia, someone else idk.

WUBRG87 says... #2

Like have each deck be themed to a certain plane in the multiverse. Or make more partner commanders.

I would love to see some 2 or 3 color planneswalker commanders since we only have the mono color ones, I'd love to see a tri colored ajani in naya or maybe a jund or temur walker

We've gotten every color combination but allied guilds currently (aside from cats, which were ). I would be up for allied pair decks just for completion, even if it's another set of 4 and they ignore Selesnya.

MagicalHacker says... #6

I'd like them to do monocolored decks using cards that answers the question "Why would I ever play a deck with only one color in it?" successfully for the majority of players (other than budget of course).

We do have cards that answer that question, but Blood Moon, Crypt Ghast, and Emeria, The Sky Ruin aren't fun/playable/extensive enough to really push players to want to build them.

Cards that reward players for playing monocolored decks and cards that punish players based on the number of colors they are playing are both suuuuper interesting to me, and I'd love to see them tackle this!

Deck 1) Zendikar's Defenders: rainbow ally deck running lots of mana ramp and creatures.

Deck 2) Phyrexian Conquerors: non-white -1 counter deck with some proliferate subthemes.

Deck 3) Survivors of Innistrad: a human tribal deck in GW, with several non-human cards that support humans (hunting dogs, angels, and such), and a small equipment package a la og Innistrad.

Deck 4) Monsters of the Night: a death-centric deck, focused on stocking your and opponents' graveyards and casting demons, sacrificing creatures, and other monsterly stuff.

Deck 5) Arcane Spirits: a mashup of Innistradian and Kamigawan spirits (could be any number of colors but UW are musts) with an arcane spell package, as well.

We're missing a colorless commander deck. It's obviusly possible to build it, but it's more pricey than anyone else, so that's why I hope WOTC will do something with the precons

DrukenReaps says... #10

More partner options, more planewalkers that can be commanders, and some of the color combinations generally the 3 color are really lacking in commanders so I'd love to see some of those combinations filled out.

ZendikariWol says... #11

Good point pony.

I stand by decks 2 and 4, but instead of 1, 3, and 5:

1) Fighters in Filigree: W/G/maybe R revolt deck (imagine a revolt commander!! better yet, a partner).

3) Interplanar Barbarians: red/white and centered in opponents losing life every turn. Imagine lots of bloodlust, a little dethrone, and some boros/mardu attacking themes tossed in. not actual barbarian tribal

5) I just can't think of another thing to do...

I wouldn't mind a smorgasbord of mechanics we've seen up till now. Lieutenant, Myriad, Partner, Tempting Offer, etc.

December 20, 2017 10:38 a.m.

ZendikariWol says... #15

1) A group hug featuring all the vows from c11, all the join forces from c11, and the c13 tempting offers. Excluding black and maybe red.

2) An aggro deck showcasing lieutenant, the vows again, myriad, 4 more partners, and some more aggressive tempting offers (dealing damage, creating tokens, creature sacrifice if black, etc). This deck could be any combination of non-blue colors. Also maybe a join forces that deals damage to each creature.

3) A control deck with the vows and myriad, as well as some manipulative tempting offers (card draw, resurrection, copying dudes, destroying creatures, etc)

4) A tribal deck with myriad, lieutenant, and tempting offers? I know tribal was just done but this is a really cool spin.

5) Perhaps a group hate-ish deck, with vows and mean tempting offers and abusive join forces, lots of the curses, and myriad everywhere?

Also if this, clearly a multiplayer-oriented commander set comes out... can we have the return of the melee mechanic?

Oh yeah, they all have 4 partner commanders too.

I would like to see a five-colored deck that has a theme other than tribal, as well as a colorless deck, since that idea has not yet been explored.

Also, a deck that encourages its opponents to attack each other, while its controller builds their forces, would be very nice. The deck with Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis did have that theme, but I would like to see that theme taken even further.

I want more join forces! Collective Voyage is my favorite card in magic, and I'd like to see some more ideas for the mechanic. That and Tempting Offer, like on Tempt with Discovery would be cool.

As for the decks, I believe somewhere they said they liked the 4-decks idea and were gonna stick with that, at least for a little while, when C17 released. Could be wrong though, but if it's true that means the decks won't be based on color, but instead theme.

I like the plane decks idea. A phyrexian one in non-white, or possibly Sultai although I'd like to be able to put The Scorpion God in it if they made it. Other than that, I'm not sure what other planes they'd pick, since tribal would probably be a definite no, but maybe a Zendikar lands deck in Naya.

As far as I know, each commander set brings something new i.e. Lieutenant, Planeswalker commanders, Eminence, Partner. I want to see decks focused around the major antagonists in the series with "Master plans"- cards that the entire deck was built around.

At the risk of voicing an unpopular idea, I would love to see a deck which utilizes Banding. Currently, there are only two possible commanders with Banding--Soraya the Falconer, who is limited to a mediocre tribe, and Ayesha Tanaka, whose ability is quite substandard.

The mechanic itself provides some interesting possibilities, but is from an era where cards tend to be under-powered and vastly over-costed. Banding does some cool things on the defense, including providing immunity from trample damage. On offense, it would be really fun to band a card like Breaker of Armies with Stuffy Doll.

Since the mechanic is a bit of a wordy mess, we are never going to see it released in a standard-legal set. However, given Commander's more laid-back environment, it seems the perfect place for a limited re-release of the mechanic.

What I like to see for MTG 2018 would be another flavorful commander set being introduced like this:

1, maybe a mono white or multicolor life gain theme deck with with Serra herself as a plainswalker or legendary creature as the commander for one of the decks I would love this!

2, Urza commander which I could see being a muiltcolor deck having a few brand new cards that are flavor based around Urza and his brother mishra? ( hope I spelled that right) I could defenitly see Urza being a plainswalker commander aswell. Also Mishra should totally be one of the lieutenants of the deck as another commander of the deck and yes I know there is already a card of him but I want them to make a better one.

3, Yawgmoth commander deck? absolutely! I could see this deck being mono-black I could see this deck being graveyard focused and also lifedrain. I could also see Yawgmoth being the commander himself being just a legendary creature also they should unband yawgmoth's will for this deck which I know wont happen. (or is it unbanded I don't remember).

4, Next one I'm kinda in the air about which I could see a deck either being a Colorless Karn commander deck with which they could make him into another plainswalker commander.

5,My next idea would be for them to make a commander deck based off the weatherlight crew and everyone. As for the for the actual commander of the deck itself they should make the weatherlight ship a legendary artifact creature vehicle with the "Crew" mechcanic with something like crew 5 or something to that effect.

but those are my ideas for commander 2018

Whatever the decks turn out to be one thing is for sure...they will all be broken - thanks to Powercreep.

Wizards only cares about higher sales than the last set so expect some new busted ability like eminence...on the upside this does allow new players to step up to older EDH decks ;)

February 14, 2018 7:37 p.m.

Caerwyn says... #27

Rabid_Wombat

Couple slight problems with your theory:

(1) Eminence is not a busted new ability--it is a codification of an older ability--Oloro, Ageless Ascetic effectively has eminence, as its healing ability triggers regardless of whether it is in the command zone or on the battlefield.

(2) Arahbo, Roar of the World is tier 4. Edgar Markov and The Ur-Dragon is tier 3. Inalla, Archmage Ritualist is tier 2.5. The stats do not really support your position that eminence is a "busted ability".

February 14, 2018 10:44 p.m.

Rabid_Wombat says... #29

cdkime slight problem with your theory is that the tier ranking has nothing to do with how competitive a deck is....lolz :D

And many people complained that Oloro was OP and broken back in the day...just sayin'

February 15, 2018 8:45 p.m.

DrukenReaps says... #30

I wouldn't say eminence is anymore broken than untapping all lands on a successful cast... You can do some nutty things with quite a few commanders. That said MTG has always had power creep. Grizzly Bears was a solid card, now most players won't look twice at it...

I did just want to say that some leaked information came out suggesting we will get 4 decks with 3 commanders in each. I haven't seen any leaks prove completely false as of yet, some misreadings of fuzzy text, but nothing false.

Thomasin4413 says... #32

If you look at the art on the "Coming Soon" page on the c18 page there are only 4 decks again this year

February 17, 2018 2:23 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #33

Thomasin4413, obviously, WotC wishes to save themselves money when printing the cards by having fewer decks in each product, but are we, the customers, still getting the same number of new cards with each Commander product? Are will still getting a good deal from WotC?

February 18, 2018 3:54 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #34

User:DemonDragonJ I believe that we still got the same number of new cards in C17, which had 4 decks, and they still have fairly large print runs. Although I like having even color distribution among five decks, having 4 does and building around themes instead of colors does make sense.

February 18, 2018 8:57 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #35

RazortoothMtg, I am sorry that I need to ask this, but how does it make sense? The decks that had even color distribution had their own themes, so building decks around themes is not a new practice.

February 18, 2018 10:39 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #36

User:DemonDragonJ I mean, it lets it be a little more creative. If we had to have an even color distribution among last years tribal decks, we wouldn't have gotten Dragons (They wouldn't do 5 5-color decks), and they would have had to choose between Wedges (with Vamps), Shards (with Wizards), or Ally-color pairs (with Cats).

February 19, 2018 11:05 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #37

RazortoothMtg, that does make sense, and I hope that WotC will eventually print a five-colored EDH deck with a theme other than tribal (although that may be difficult to do), as well as a colorless EDH deck.

So does Tezzeret, Ajani, Sarkhan and Lilliana appearing in Core 2019 take them out of the running as Commanders this year? Does Vivien Reid just making her introduction now make her more likely? for C18.

With the next three blocks in a row being on Ravnica does that give us anything to speculate with as to how the company will want to spotlight different characters?

I'm dying to at least know who the Planeswalkers involved are.

June 16, 2018 1:23 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #41

Could we speculate about what characters from the storyline who have not yet had cards in the game may appear in this set? If so, there are numerous characters whom I wish to see, including Ashnod, Tawnos, Xantcha, Gix, and the black/white legendary angel from Innistrad. To eb fair, four of those characters have had Vanguard avatars, but none of them have been depicted as creatures, thus far.

man1ac and mr_lag the design team announced on Reddit or Twitter the other day that spoilers would start on July 12th, where they will give us a bunch of new art as well as all the themes & colors for the 4 decks.

June 29, 2018 4:01 p.m.

I've read almost the entire post.

My ideas: 1) A colorless deck. May be not a tribal one. 2) Mono-colored, Two or up to three colored decks. 3) God cards into the decks that you can use as Commander. 4) Give a twist to some oldie abilities combined with new ones: Banding, Rampage (despite there's a "new rampage"), Phasing, Buyback, Horsemanship, flashback (Just imagine, for e.g., a deck with Buyback, Flasback), Hellbent, Threshold, Fading (Creatures with Fading & Undying), Ingest X (Why not?) 5) In case of Tribal, What do you like to see?

July 1, 2018 8:09 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #46

ClubToDeath_Unsummon_Legend: I strongly doubt it'll be tribal since that was last year's theme. However, Ingest X gave me an idea. I would really like a Legend that would allow us to almost make a Processor tribal deck with cards like Blight Herder and Oblivion Sower, and since those are really the only good processors, some new ones as well. Maybe some other exile matters cards.

July 1, 2018 8:34 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #47

EJogadordeMagicmas they have already said that 2018 will be 4 decks like last year, not 5. Also, Selesnya was printed last year with the cat deck. However, for color balance, they probably won't be the other 4 2-color pairs. In addition to this, the Dominaria art book has brand new unused art for Lord Windgrace (the Panther Warrior PW who ruled Urborg) that is likely to be used for this year's set considering the decks are likely led by PW commanders. There have also been a few other new pieces of art for returning Planeswalkers that we've seen recently, mostly from that PW poster someone found (Link if you haven't seen it). This included Daretti and Saheeli on Kaladesh and Elspeth holding her returned mask in the Theros Underworld. (The other new arts all look to be from Ravnica). I would guess that it's most likely that we get Windgrace and Elspeth, as the Daretti and Saheeli both look like they are in a return to Kaladesh rather than a supplemental set.

July 10, 2018 10:37 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #49

User:DemonDragonJ I mean idk about Ulgrotha, but in past sets we have had Kaseto, Orochi Archmage and O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami as well as a few more.

July 11, 2018 9:57 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #50

RazortoothMtg, yes that is very true, so WotC has not forgotten about Kamigawa, although I would like to see a new incarnation of Baron Sengir, since the newest core set had new incarnations of the original elder dragons.
