So the next set, codenamed "archery" has been given an official name and what type of set it'll be.

It's going to be called Throne of Eldraine and will be a fairyland style plane. So any speculation on what night be there in the set.

legendofa says... #2

Some creature type guesses from most likely to least likely:

Faeries

Humans

Knights

Dragons

Ogres

Elves

I'm curious to see how similar to Lorwyn-Shadowmoor it's going to be. Probably relatively few Angels, Zombies, Hydras, and Sphinxes, as far as the marquee types go.

sergiodelrio says... #3

I guess it's gonna be a “fixed“ lorwyn/shadowmoor including red fairies (I think I recall MaRo saying there's where he'd put them next) and more throwbacks to these planes, but also with some humans, as MaRo also said not putting humans in lorwyn was a mistake. Basically “King Arthur Plane“

dbpunk says... #5

Honestly my guess is there's probably going to be Giants too. Maybe in black, since Giants are generally monsters in fairy tales.

July 18, 2019 4:17 p.m.

ZendikariWol says... #6

dbpunk, Giants aren’t usually black characters though, even in fairy tales. They’re not greedy, not power hungry, usually not particularly bright. Usually they’re just rampaging.

July 18, 2019 4:26 p.m.

dbpunk says... #7

Makes sense. I mean mostly I'm thinking of just pure hunger.

July 18, 2019 4:31 p.m.

MoonHollow124 says... #8

I liked the no humans vibe of Lorwyn. Gave something different to it. Also, didn't add more humans to modern. I personally think Throne of Eldraine is going to be like the Feywild of D&D with a creeping corruption and Fae courts arguing on how to resolve the issue.

July 18, 2019 4:57 p.m.

JANKYARD_DOG says... #9

We just had a return plane, so I'm doubtful of Lorwyn as much as a return would be nice. I will admit it was my first thought too "Faires = Lorwyn". A quick google search finds nothing about who/where/what Eldraine is either so no other hints.

July 18, 2019 8:55 p.m.

It was already announced that the fall set will take place on a new plane, although I don’t have a source. But I’m fairly certain that this has been confirmed.

July 18, 2019 9:13 p.m.

multimedia says... #11

Very exciting, it's a new plane, it's called Eldraine :)

Here's what's been spoiled so far about the set:

  1. The set name is Throne of Eldraine and it releases on October 4.
  2. Eldraine is the name of the new plane the set takes place on.
  3. There's a known Planeswalker native to Eldraine, but we don't know yet who it is.
  4. There are Faeries in the set.
  5. Eldraine has nothing to do with Eldrazi.

The panel to reveal Throne of Eldraine and Eldraine will be held July 20 at 6:30 PM US Pacific time. The panel will not be streamed. Wizards has said an article will be posted on their website immediately after the panel, presenting the information from the panel.

MoonHollow124 says... #13

I think I know that symbol from somewhere...

July 18, 2019 10:44 p.m.

There are speculations out there that Eldraine is where Bolas parked Garruk so he wouldn't kill the walkers on Ravnica.

July 19, 2019 2:42 a.m.

That would be kinda cool, maybe Garruk has completely lost his spark and is now stomping around Eldraine as some horrible monster that lives in the woods scaring locals, becoming a fairytale in his own right on the plane.

July 19, 2019 8:43 a.m.

Also they just brought back protection as a mechanic so I would not be surprised to see White Knight and Black Knight return in some form or another.

Fae courts would make sense and allow a faerie heavy set without it feeling too samey to lorwyn.

Horses. There will be horses.

Monarch would be an interesting ability to see in a standard set. However, it might be too strong in situations where you are already ahead in 1v1 games.

July 19, 2019 9:11 a.m.

Rzepkanut says... #17

I think fairies are not going to be a big part of the new set. People that are speculating on Faerie tribal being a big part of standard are probably going to be disappointed. I think the name and flavor points more at traditional fantasy tropes more like a PG version of Game of Thrones. Besides Maro even said on his blog that fairies are not the focus of the set or plane.

July 19, 2019 10:13 a.m.

legendofa says... #18

I suspect it's not even going to be a tribal-driven set in general, let alone for Faeries. "Throne" implies some measure of nobility, and if Eldraine is the plane, it's probably going to be more or less unified under a single ruler; otherwise, I think it would be more like "Thrones of Eldraine."

My big question right now is the nature of the conflict here. Noble knights slaying ravaging monsters? Intracourt politics and rival factions? Wicked hags that eat children and curse people until they find true love? Good-hearted peasants revolting against a cruel monarch? I guess I'm going to have to wait until tomorrow, but the WotC marketing crew has a lot of experience with giving out just enough information to keep people guessing.

War of the Spark was a fairly dark and heavy set. I don't think this one will be as bright and shiny and clean as Kaladesh, or as simple and pastoral as Lorwyn, but it's going to be a little lighter in tone and appearance. What themes, if any, would continue from WAR and M20? Commander 2019 might even have a hint.

July 19, 2019 12:23 p.m.

Phaetion says... #19

I suspect this is where Kaya will find Liliana.

The sequel to the War of the Spark novel comes out around the time this set does, and that focuses on the hunt for Liliana.

It would make sense for the set to tie with the book here.

July 19, 2019 12:37 p.m.

legendofa says... #20

Phaetion Interesting thought. If this set turns out to be Garruk's return, wouldn't that mean Kaya's chasing Liliana, Garruk's hunting both Kaya and Liliana, as well as anyone else around, and they're all in the same place at the same time?

July 19, 2019 12:47 p.m.

clentdc says... #21

Liliana controls the eternals and the God-eternals still- right?

Did Tezzeret start working for Liliana now too? If so can she transport them with or without the Planar Bridge?

July 19, 2019 1:46 p.m.

CrimsonChaos says... #22

So WAR spoilers obviously ahead, but I'm pretty sure that the God-Eternals are all perma-dead now: Oketra got roasted by Bolas, Bontu was destroyed after taking in his spark, Rhonas was absorbed by Blackblade iirc, and Kefnet was annihilated by Niv-Mizzet Reborn . Tezzeret went of to who knows where after he got whooped on Amonkhet, and the Planar Bridge is toast as far as I know.

Either way, I could see Liliana hiding out on Eldraine. Garruk being there too would be all the better. If both end up being true, Liliana's gonna have yet another reckoning to deal with, and the Raven Man better be involved.

witches & curses hopefully. I love curses!

Also... Flavor miss if we don't see Legendary equipment creature. Like a sentient singing sword, that has a licidlike mechanic... because licids rule. & I want my commander to be an equipment. & a mjolner-like hammer would be good with this mechanic too.

July 19, 2019 9:01 p.m.

Gleeock says... #25

Also, a cursed sword equipment creature that can behave like a crown of doom/vow plz :) ... You don't get much more fairytale than sentient equipment.

July 19, 2019 11:56 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #26

Given the name of the set and the image of fairies on the poster, I shall presume that this set is on a plane inspired by traditional Arthurian/Tolkienian lore, which would be nice, since this game has not had a straightforward high fantasy story since the Theros block (or since the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block, if Theros being modeled after ancient Greece disqualifies it from qualifying as "high fantasy").

July 20, 2019 12:51 a.m.

dbpunk says... #27

Hey y'all... Something we haven't considered.

Fairies were in Norse mythos as being part of the elves and disir.

Norse mythology plane is a plane Maro said he's wanted before.

Maro said that the set for the fall is a new plane and one he wanted for a while.

It might not be fairy tale themed, but Viking themed.

July 20, 2019 2:20 a.m.

Gleeock says... #28

In which case sentient equipment should still be a shoe-in ;)

July 20, 2019 1:02 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #29

dbpunk, I very much wish to see a set modeled after Norse mythology, but the name "Eldraine" evokes images of King Arthur and old England more than images of Norway/Scandinavia and vikings, and there are already two planes with vaguely Nordic names, Valla and Kladheim, so WotC would not need to create a third.

July 20, 2019 3:06 p.m.

multimedia says... #30

The panel at SDCC is over. Lots of information and images of Throne of Eldraine were shown.

Eldraine is a swords and sorcery Arthurian and Grimm Fairy Tales themed plane.

Although not confirmed yet we have a new image of Rowan Kenrith, from Battlebond meaning she could be the known Planeswalker of the set who's native to Eldraine. I presume if she is Will Kenrith will also make an appearance in this set or the next, no possible image of him was shown today...

Rowan Kenrith , the swords and magic coming out of her hand are the same.

A new card design format is being introduced in the set. Two different cards in one.

The Showcase frame of this same card is special, possibly a promo.

Here's lots more fantastic images of the artwork of the set. These are artworks from actual cards, but no actual cards have been spoiled.

July 20, 2019 11:57 p.m.

dbpunk says... #31

I really hope there are cards that create gingerbread man tokens.

July 21, 2019 12:36 a.m.

A fairytale set? Damn, I love this idea. These artworks are just beautiful.

The new frame looks like the inside of a book. It seems the cards will vary between permanent and non-permanent?

July 21, 2019 1:14 a.m.

multimedia says... #33

Grimms' Fairy Tales that take an even darker turn is great thematic vision. What a creative meshing of parts of the original tale with a Magic twist. Especially since Magic stories are very character driven with Planeswalkers; so are Fairy Tales. Lets hope this vision translates just as well to actual playable mechanics and cards.

My guess is all the Showcase cards with the new frame in the set are characters depicted in the Fairy Tales and the rest of the cards in the set are actually not based on Fairy Tales. So far we've seen Goldilocks, Rapunzel, Gingerbread Man, Gingerbread House, Wicked Witch, Wicked Stepmother, Frog Prince.

Here's Goldilocks. The bears should of just let her sleep :)

Don't mess with Cinderella's Wicked Stepmother.

So they announced that they're also going to do set specific Brawl sets from now on starting with Thrones of Eldraine too. And we got our first look at a card from them with this bad boy

And this infinitely better version of Command Sphere

July 22, 2019 1:47 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #35

We know that Rowan Kenrith is from this plane, and shall be in the set, but where is Will? Has WotC decided that they shall not always have both siblings together?

That new mana-generating artifact is amazing, and I wish that I had room in my EDH decks for it, but I shall definitely put it in every EDH deck that I build from this point forward.

Chulane is very awesome, but I am not certain if I can make room for him in my green/white/blue EDH deck; do you think that his name is pronounced "chu-lein" or "chu-lah-neh?"

July 22, 2019 10:24 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #36

multimedia, that girl looks like she is not even in double digits of age, which makes her rather disturbing, wielding those weapons; this is now the second time that WotC had had a creepy child in a card, with the first being Aminatou. Could they not at least have drawn her looking to be around eleven or twelve years of age?

July 22, 2019 10:27 p.m.

Gleeock says... #37

How is Aminatou not the planeswalker from this plane specifically?.. I mean, I know Rowan is pictured (& looking pretty cool), but this plane screams: Aminatou

July 22, 2019 11:03 p.m.

multimedia says... #38

DemonDragonJ, it's very disrupting and over the top, also too much, but I think that's the point. To show that after she ran away into the woods she returned with a weapon to the Three Bears house later that day since that's where the tale ends :) Another way to look at it is the tale says she runs away, but obviously the bears probably ate her therefore the Magic twist is she fought back and instead killed the bears. The context and composition of the card is very creepy reminds me of a Garbage Pail Kids card.

Gleeock, yeah a real missed opportunity to not have Aminatou, the Fateshifter be native to Eldraine. She's mysterious even her card artwork looks like a modern take on a Grimms' Fairy Tale... Rowan and her bro are cool, but pretty generic. Strong white woman and man with armor, swords and they create magic. While Aminatou is more diverse; a black girl with a wand, who commands moths and creates magic. In my opinion Aminatou is one of the more interesting Planeswalkers who we know nothing about.

It's been confirmed by Maro that the third Planeswalker in the set is a new character. Lets hope for a nonHuman more interesting Planeswalker.

July 23, 2019 12:06 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #39

multimedia, who is the second planeswalker from this plane: Will Kenrith or someone else?

July 23, 2019 10 p.m.

multimedia says... #40

Maro and Verhey confirmed that Rowan Kenrith and Will Kenrith are Planeswalkers in the set. Maro also confirmed that in the set there's a third Planeswalker who's new. Currently, that's all we know.

It makes sense for the fairy tale theme of the set that Rowan and Will be portrayed as Hansel and Gretel because they're siblings. We have also already seen the Gingerbread House in one of the artworks. This makes sense from a creative side to tie the main Planeswalkers to a theme of the set. However, if you look at the artwork already revealed of Rowan she looks like Little Red Riding Hood grown up in the forest. Maro also confirmed that's there's a Big Bad Wolf in the set which is even more speculation that Rowan is being portrayed as LRRH. If Rowan is LRRH then who is Will in the tale?

July 24, 2019 12:04 a.m. Edited.

dbpunk says... #41

Will got bitten by a werewolf and is obviously the big bad wolf.

July 24, 2019 10:30 a.m.

multimedia, could I get a source on that? Not doubting you, fam, just wanna give it a read.

July 24, 2019 7:21 p.m.

Gleeock says... #43

I mean, how literal of a fairytale spin are they taking? Is it a loose association of themes?? Or MTG's version of almost the same stories?

July 24, 2019 7:23 p.m.

ZendikariWol says... #44

To my understanding, Gleeock, Wizards is taking the feel of Grimm’s fairy tales and interpreting it in their own way. They did a similar thing with greek mythology on Theros and egyptian myth on Amonkhet.

July 24, 2019 8:06 p.m.

multimedia says... #45

ZendikariWol, source on what part? The images and the first bit of information about the set is sourced from Wizards Twitter from the actual SDCC panel. You can read Blogatog which is Maro's blog where he answers peoples questions about Magic. When I say Maro confirmed in my comments that's where I'm getting the source.

Gleeock, I doubt the fairy tale theme is going to be a literal interpretation of the original fairy tales. At least I hope not because that's lame and I doubt Wizards has permission to use original names and original themes. The main characters of the fairy tales so far appear to be the focus because really they're the easiest to convey with an actual card. It appears they aren't being conveyed as the literal characters of the original fairy tales though. Flaxen Intruder is the name of the Goldilocks card. The source for this info is from Reddit. Maro linked to the image from Blogatog.

There's more examples that Wizards appears to be switching up the story lines for the fairy tales; this can be shown in some artworks so far.

Is this inside the Gingerbread House of the Hanzel and Gretel tale? That's the Witch being put into the oven instead of Hanzel and Gretel? Hanzel and Gretel may of had help from Elves to capture/kill the Witch because that's an Elf putting the pie into the oven.

Could this be Snow White? It's a reversal of the tale if it is. She's kissing the Prince to wake him up, release him from a curse.

dbpunk suggested that Will Kenrith, who's in the set, may be the Big Bad Wolf and you know you may be right because that's a an out of the box twist of the tale. Rowan's own brother is hurting her, that's disturbing.

July 24, 2019 11:49 p.m.

Gleeock says... #46

I see. Well, on that same Aminatou vein from earlier... Estrid also would be an appropriate walker for this plane too... Reminds me of Bowie from 'Labrynth'. Speaking of The Goblin King, makes me wonder how goblins would be depicted in this set? MTG goblins are pretty different from the powerful, often subterranean Mab-brood depicted in fairy tales - their traits would usually be more in line with being insanely elusive, impervious to physical harm, and packing a bunch of parallel/double-edged sword types of powers. Should be fun to see what they do. Maybe we will see more access to leprechauns too!

July 25, 2019 12:04 a.m.

I mean, my comment on will becoming a werewolf was more joking but sure let's go with that.

DemonDragonJ says... #48

For three mana, jousting dummy’s ability should definitely increase its toughness as well as its power.

Why is faerie guidemother not called faerie godmother? Are there no gods on Eldraine?

I do like the flavor of wicked guardian, but 4 power is very high for a noble who does not appear to be a warrior; is she a magic user?

Once upon a time is a very nice card, and I think that its ability to be cast for free is an interesting idea that WotC could explore further in the future.

Kenrith, the returned king is very awesome, but will require a very specific deck to truly achieve his full potential. His title fascinates me; where did he go, from where did he return, and, most importantly, why did he leave and then return?

I am very pleased to see that there are dragons on Eldraine (and archons, as well), but will there be angels and demons, or do those creatures not fit within a world inspired by fairy tales and Arthurian legends?

Stolen by the fae could have been good if it either had been an instant or said “X or less,” as the fact that it does not allow the player to create a number of tokens greater than the targeted creature’s converted mana cost is a very unfortunate restriction.

Gleeock says... #49

I always feel like the duality type of morality to traditional angels and demons kindof craps on the fairy tale thing. It always seemed like Arthur & his monotheism brought a pretty hardstop to the world of fae. Probably the best part of Fae the seemingly nonsensical amoral nature behind most of them. They don't pluck the "wings off a butterfly" because innate badness so much as curiosity unbound by morality & some of them simply fill a specific programmed role without the ability to break the bounds of a story, which again could make a person argue as to the true evil behind a "malevolent" fairytale character. This is where I could see a fellow like Garruk just aimlessly filling out The Hunter/Mindless Beast role in some enchanted fairy realm... cursed to play a role & losing track of time.

September 11, 2019 9:29 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #50

Is anyone here surprised that epic downfall is black? Reave soul makes sense, because black punishes weaker creatures, whereas white punishes stronger creatures. That effect is usually white, unless WotC is deliberately giving it to black for greater versatility.

With the release of a portrait of the Kenrith family, it has been revealed that there are actually four Kenrith siblings, so I wonder if the others shall ever have a major role in the story. Will and Rowan are as fair-featured as their father, where as Erec and Hazel are between their parents in terms of coloration, which means that Will and Rowan are likely from a different mother, and I wonder if that shall be an important plot point?
