So it begins. Apparently someone pulled a Portuguese Amonkhet card in a MM3 pack. Here it is. Amonkhet spoiler

Dusk 2WW

Sorcery

Destroy all creatures with power 3 or greater

Dawn 3WW

Sorcery

Consequence - cast this spell only from your graveyard. Then exile it.

Return all creatures with power less than or equal to 2 from your graveyard to your hand.

Finally! A Standard version of Wrath of God, just not nearly as good.

this formatting looks like there is very little room for card text, so the halves of all the cards like this are probaly all going to be pretty simple. Wonder how this will interact with the expertise cycle.

March 17, 2017 10:51 p.m. Edited.

Linkdude74 says... #4

Lol. I'm curious how consequence cards work with the Expertise cycle. Like, what if a consequence costs 2 cmc while the top half costs 3? Can we cast the top half with Kari Zev's Expertise?

DarkMagician says... #5

Looks terrible

March 17, 2017 10:52 p.m.

wait, this says 210/269, but on http://magic.wizards.com/en/products/amonkhet/products it says "Number ofCards: 264". how does that work? Were there 5 cards randomly added, or is this bad printing?

March 17, 2017 10:59 p.m.

Linkdude74 says... #7

Good catch. Well this is still fun to discuss Yeah?

March 17, 2017 11:01 p.m.

Linkdude74 says... #8

Wait the full art basic lands also say 2xx/269

March 17, 2017 11:04 p.m.

maybe they decided to add in the 5 fullarts to the number

March 17, 2017 11:05 p.m.

Linkdude74 says... #10

I think that's the case. The full arts are 250-254, giving 3 arts for each basic from 255-269.

March 17, 2017 11:13 p.m.

seems like Wotc hasn't been updating their Amonkhet page especially with all the spoilers flying around, too bad the bottom half of the card doesn't "Return all creatures with power less than or equal to 2 from your graveyard to the battlefield", because after destroying everything big, returning everything small makes more sense.

Servo_Token says... #12

You can't cast this with an expertise, considering that it says "Cast this only from your graveyard". It's basically flashback but with a different ability instead of the same ability as the first one.

Makes for some interesting scenarios with the actual flashback mechanic, ala Snapcaster Mage because it's just a split card in your graveyard. Don't know yet if you'll be able to cast this for 4 if you give it actual flashback.

Still neat tho.

MagicalHacker says... #13

While I think the frame is horrid, the design is very cool, and I'm excited to see what WotC has done with it.

That is, if this is real, because 210 seems really high for a white card with a name starting with a D...

March 18, 2017 1:09 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #14

Why is this card not using the normal frame style for split cards? Is there some special reason for one spell on the card being horizontally-aligned and the other being vertically-aligned?

March 18, 2017 1:26 a.m.

Linkdude74 says... #15

All of the split cards in previous sets were in the back of the set @MagicalHacker

@DemonDragonJ probably for 2 reasons. 1. To see it in your graveyard better. 2. To differentiate it from fuse cards

March 18, 2017 1:29 a.m.

MagicalHacker says... #16

Linkdude74, ohhhhhhh okay, I didn't know that. That makes sense!

DemonDragonJ, I think it's more because one side is cast as normal, and the other side only from the graveyard. I get that this is the first time that casting a card from a graveyard has a totally different effect, but I still think the weird split frame looks ugly.

March 18, 2017 1:36 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #17

Linkdude74, MagicalHacker, that makes sense, as long as WotC uses the normal style for split cards if they ever revisit them after this block.

On that subject, with this card revealed, does anyone think that the Amonkhet block may have a strong emphasis on the graveyard or creatures dying, since death and the afterlife were hugely important to the ancient Egyptians, or is it too early to predict that from only one card?

March 18, 2017 1:44 a.m.

Linkdude74 just wondering, but would artifacts be after split cards or before? because if this white split card is 210, and the basic lands start at 250 (because of full art lands), there could be a bunch of split cards, or not that much and some artifacts after.

March 18, 2017 1:44 a.m.

Linkdude74 says... #19

Artifacts would be after, as well as lands

March 18, 2017 1:53 a.m.

wow, then that means that we have like 40 cards for the rest of the split cards and all the artifacts after this card (since "d" is pretty early in the alphabet, and we probably wont have another "consequence" card before this)

March 18, 2017 2 a.m.

TavinM says... #21

The reason that it is formatted like that is a callback to the Flashback tombstone. You turn is sideways in your graveyard with the "Dawn" side hanging out, as a reminder of your ability to cast it

March 18, 2017 3:20 a.m.

CChaos says... #22

Interesting new design, a bit awkward.

I'd like to see this card in foil.

SchismReport says... #23

youtube.com/mosbergswerve this guy has been right about MM17 being huge hit or miss per box, Khans of Tarkir jumping in price, and now saying Amonket will be HUGE, doubling in price after 1 year.

MagicalHacker says... #24

Nice try, but I wasted 30 seconds checking out the channel, and I want them back.

Phaetion says... #25

Weird formatting, awesome card. I'll surely pick this up for my latest creation.

Fugl says... #26

I could see this in my planeswalker build. Use Thraben Inspector, Selfless Spirit, Gonti, Lord of Luxury or Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim as chumb blockers. Also seems like a card that destroys snek decks

APPLE01DOJ says... #27

Looks atrocious from a design standpoint.

March 18, 2017 3:33 p.m.

Linkdude74 says... #28

I think it's greatr from a design standpoint. especially since it's designed so you ca turn it sideways in graveyard to see that you have it in there.

March 18, 2017 5:28 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #29

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that by "design standpoint", Apple was referring to the appearance of the card design.

While I typically enjoy outside-the-box designs and appearances, I also think this appearance looks messy/disorganized. However, I am anticipating learning to appreciate it as I become more accustomed to it.

K34 says... #31

This looks horrible. I really hope this is just a fake. The previous double cards looked much better as parallel rather than perpendicular!

March 18, 2017 9:30 p.m.

Hardhitta7 says... #32

Damn that is ugly. Seems like a cool card otherwise.

March 18, 2017 10:20 p.m.

Canadion says... #33

Yeah I'm not really feeling this card layout. I guess it'll have to grow on me.

Side Note: The condition of the card itself is saddening considering if the person just opened it from a MM17 pack.

March 18, 2017 10:34 p.m.

Zaueski says... #34

Epochalyptik, feature this? Its a little early but its still the first spoiler.

The card and design space I love... Still not sold on the aesthetics but I think I can get used to this... Just wonder how many problems itll cause when people turn it sideways in the graveyard and having it confused for exile...

March 19, 2017 1:37 p.m.

Linkdude74 says... #35

Zaueski I wasn't sure who to tag about that so thank you.

As to the second part, considering exile is supposed to be its own zone anyway, hopefully it won't get too confusing. I know some people are in the habit of turning cards sideways in graveyard to represent exile, but Eternal Scourge got me out of that habit. Perhaps this card style will do that for other .

March 19, 2017 4:24 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #36

This is not the first time that a card from an upcoming set has appeared in a booster pack for an existing set; does WotC do this deliberately to raise hype and anticipation for the upcoming set?

March 19, 2017 6:12 p.m.

Hardhitta7 says... #37

Canadion that bent corner almost made me shed a tear.

March 19, 2017 7:07 p.m.

Linkdude74 says... #38

Interesting thing to note. Depending on how these cards are defined, we could do crazy things with them and the Expertise cards. If they count as 1 card with 2 converted mana costs, then this possibility opens up to us. A consequence card has a top half with 6 cmc and a bottom half with 2 cmc. Cast Kari Zev's Expertise, cast top half with Kari Zev's, as it's a card with 2 cmc. Or we could even have a scenario where top half costs 3, bottom half costs 6 and we can cast bottom half off of Goblin Dark-Dwellers

March 19, 2017 7:38 p.m.

Linkdude74 says... #39

That said, we could never cast the consequence half off of an expertise.

March 19, 2017 7:41 p.m.

You'll know someone's holding one when they tilt their head sideways while looking at their hand lol

March 20, 2017 11 a.m.

AgentGreen says... #41

Interesting card, hard to say if it's legit.

That being said I can see some use in a deck like mine

March 20, 2017 7:21 p.m.

Ceondoc says... #42

I could see it going well in a small creatures deck. The design is very, very bad, but the card itself seems pretty good.

March 21, 2017 1:03 p.m.

Boza says... #43

Couldn't this be worded:

Dusk and Dawn

Sorcery - Rare

Destroy all creatures with power 3 or more. If this card was cast from a graveyard, return all creatures with power 2 or less to your hand instead.

Flashback

You know, just borrow design from Increasing Confusion, but make it so you do not have to rotate the card.

March 22, 2017 6:29 a.m.

MagicalHacker says... #44

Actually, I think the split card is the only way to design such an effect that still allows the two sides to be of different card types.

Like enchantment -> instant or creature -> sorcery, etc.

March 22, 2017 8:44 a.m.

Boza says... #45

Yes, but is it so important to do that? Both halves are sorceries on this card.

Additionally, Maro himself stated that if the tech was there to do DFCs at the time of Kamigawa, they would have never done Kamigawa split cards that way. So, why do it now?

What is the reason?

March 22, 2017 8:49 a.m.

Phaetion says... #46

I have a theory: What if the design is like this because of the holofoil stamp?

On a regular split card, if a rare, it would mean that there would need to be 2 stamps. By designing "split" cards this way, it saves Wizards from the problem of having to do it twice on one card. Thoughts?

March 22, 2017 8:59 a.m.

Boza says... #47

That sounds plausible, but if that is really the reason, it is stupid. And still can be easily done via flashback.

March 22, 2017 9:07 a.m.

MagicalHacker says... #48

I suppose they're just experimenting with the possibilities. I don't think flashback would have been sufficient for this design, because flashback is specifically a way to cast spells out of the graveyard, whereas this is a new spell that can be cast if it's in the graveyard.
