PTQ Portland worth attending as a spectator?

Long story short: I don't play competitive, I don't have much spare cash right now . . . but I'm interested in attending as a spectator (it's about 5 minutes from my apartment).

So, are there incentives/promos and other intangibles that will make my attendance fee worth it, or should I just youtube the top eight and get on with my life?

Posting in social b/c I think that's the right place . . .

There shouldn't be an attendance fee. In my experience, events have always been free to attend.

Ahhhhh. It's just that I've been to the Portland Expo Center website before and there was an $8ish fee. Must have been specific to that event (an RV show I think).

On to topic, worth a stroll for my wife and I? Any specific booths/people I should look out for?

You might as well go if there's no fee. There are usually artists (check the event info for a list), and the stores bring some interesting stuff they'd never sell online (e.g. signed cards).

Although, quite a few PTQs have no booths or artists show up at all, they're just straight up tournaments. It kind of depends on the size of the city I think, but I wouldn't expect any special shops or activities unless they've been announced somewhere on the event's web page.

Yeah; a Pro Tour Qualifier (not an actual Pro Tour tournament itself) is typically just like a big FNM. You won't find any artists or booths or side-events (unless the store does an "0-2 drop" draft).

But yeah. Just imagine an FNM with lots more people. That's basically it. Unless you're bored and live close to the shop, you're just going to be watching people play Magic at a normal table all day long.

is it better to go to the modern ptq or side events on another day? And what is the requirment for joining the ptq

I think you guys are grossly overestimating what a PTQ is. It's not like a SCG Open or anything like that.

PTQs are usually put on by standalone shops and simply host a single tournament. The stakes are bigger and there will likely be more players than normal, but these definitely aren't on the same scale as a SCG Open. You'd probably be hard-pressed to even find a booster draft going on or any other sort of side event.

Hm. I guess I tend to associate anything above FNM with the 200-700 size. Carry on.

I'm guessing OP is actually referring to the Pro Tour this weekend. In which case yeah there will be vendors and I think side events, but if you look up the event it should say what's going on.

I'd say it's worth a stroll.

Could be; A PTQ is just like a big FNM.

A PT tournament, though, is definitely something to go to. There are side-events, pros playing against other pros, and tons of extras for visitors.

Yeah . . . title probably misleading. I re-read the event center sign as I biked past today and it is the pro tour. Meh, I should just gfgi.
