I was debating if it could actually work in pauper with a friend. The most viable strategy we could come up with is a g/b list, but couldn't come up with an endgame. I've even tried to work it in a u/r list with Jace's Erasure as the finisher, but it eventually falls behind and very quickly vs. aggro. Is it hopeless and just a casual t3 deck at best no matter how you spin it?

Not really tier 1 material, but lots of decks will fall behind easily with a couple of LDs.
Green/Black or green/red can easily do this or even just monogreen. Aurochs Herd is a great finisher, after ramping with things like Utopia Sprawl and Mwonvuli Acid-Moss. 2-3 Ulamog's Crusher can be your other finishers. You can also play Fierce Empath to find either of them.
