Want to play more magic. What to use?

I want to playtest my somewhat budget white deck (about $100 in paper) more and see people here play on both MTGO, Cockatrice and Untap.in.
What do you recommend the most, and why?
How much will it cost to acquire my standard-deck on MTGO?

Cockatrice. It's got a better user interface than MTGO and it's free. You can build and play whatever you want. You have to pay money for cards you can't use in real-life with MTGO.

I like LackeyCCG the most. They have been having trouble with card images recently so not sure how appealing that is but here is the plugin if you decide to go that route.

Cockatrice! :D Why use money on MTGO, when you can have any card for free on Cockatrice?

I've read that a problem with Untap.in is that it's possible to make illegal plays. Is it the same with Cockatrice?

Yeah, cockatrice is user judged, so it's very similar to playing in real life without an official judge.

You do get a lot of trolls and a lot of decks aren't exactly tier-one on Cockatrice, but it's better than paying any amount of money and it's really simple for playing against friends and brewing/testing ideas without having to buy cards.

Thanks :) For my other question, will it cost about $100 to build my $100 paper standard deck on MTGO?

Keys to doing well on Cockatrice:

  1. Make a huge buddy list of people you enjoy playing with, then only play with buddies. However, this takes some time, so...

  2. Don't join "rooms", make your own. Then you kick the trolls, as opposed to them kicking you.

  3. Have a very clear description for room. If you want competitive, say it. Having no description means you will be playing against what is possibly the jankiest 85-card pile ever created.

  4. Be chill. You don't want to become that troll that everyone hates. Thus, don't be a sore loser, sore winner, someone who blames the shuffler, etc.

With just these things, Cockatrice becomes a great experience. Untap is fine, but the community is smaller/worse, the decks are worse, and it can be pretty buggy at times. I remain hopeful for it, but it is not yet satisfactory for me. For MTGO, it costs money (stupid, right?) and I hear it's pretty buggy.

Indigoindigo it depends. In my experience about 95% of the cards on MTGO are cheaper than paper, but sometimes you have a couple that are the opposite. Check out www.mtggoldfish.com it provides prices for both mtgo and paper.

Are people seriously NOT using google video chat and tappedout? I play against my friends almost every night for free and it works perfectly. Just share your window and have your opponent do the same. Slide their window low enough so you can't see their hand. Voila!

blockfort Why not just use Cockatrice to play against friends?

Why change to cockatrice?

Google Video Hat is good if you already have someone to play with you every time you want to play. Cockatrice lets you play Magic whenever you want without needing to call your friend first.

http://www.woogerworks.com/

Go to "Downloads", which is on the right side. Then go to either "Cockatrice Win Client" or "Cockatrice Mac Client" :D

Then download.

I think that the cards can be downloaded here :D

My Norton 360 won't let me download it. Is there a reason?

zandl says... #19

The problem is that you're using Norton 360; just turn it off and download it, then uninstall it and getting a real firewall.

zandl: The advice you just gave regarding Norton 360 is the best advice I have heard today. I couldn't agree more.
