Should Wizards Make Paper Cards Reedeemable as Online Cards?

Online Redeeming

I was just thinking to myself the other day that it would be really great if Wizards of the Coast (WoC) would include redemption codes in their products so that whatever paper cards we buy, we could use online. Pokemon does this and they are still profitable, why not do the same for MTG? The paper game is expensive enough as it is, nobody wants to spend even more money buying the same cards twice for online tournament play. WoC is basically asking players to choose paper or online. I would think that if players knew the $100.00+ booster box they bought would be playable online, they would be pretty happy about that. Wouldn't the players that mostly play online be more enticed to purchase the paper cards? Alright, enough rambling from me. Please post your thoughts on this subject and provide valid pros and cons. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from our community!

I think the biggest issue is that these tagged products are all essentially intro decks- stuff that's been built pre-packaging and has contents that're known quantities. So if MTG did this, they'd just be doing it for pre-made products like Planeswalker decks, Commander products, Duel Decks, etc. I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure Pokemon has a much bigger selection of these type of products.

GoldGhost012 That is true for Pokemon, they are all pre-made packages. I know that WWC is probably against making products like booster boxes and fat packs pre-made. I think that even if they just did it for the pre-made products, that would help save some money for players. Also, I could be wrong, but I think MTG pre-made products usually sell less than the fat packs and booster boxes. This could actually be an incentive for players to purchase them. Thanks for your feedback!

EmblemMan you are correct. I guess I had West Coast stuck in my head since they are HQ in California. Thanks.

In general, I think that something to encourage more paper players to give MTGO a try would be a good thing but at the same time I'm not really sure how you would execute this idea in a way that wouldn't seriously damage the online economy.

It's also worth mentioning that the pre-built products generally sell really poorly on MTGO, to the point that they no longer bother offering things like Commander decks or the Duel Decks at all.

@Fiochv2: They are HQ in Renton, Washington, not Cali.

I prefer paper magic because i like having things in reality. But since my lcg closed down I am probably going to switch over to online.
