New format: Spell Mastery

  1. You have 1 spell that remains in the command zone, you may cast that spell at any time after the first 2 turns
  2. Each time you cast that spell, it will cost 2 generic mana more for each time it was cast previously
  3. A library will consist of 74 cards and 1 spell mastery card
  4. There can not be duplicates of any spell within a players library
  5. 2-4 player game
  6. All cards in the library cannot contain any colour out of the colour identity of your spell mastery card

Banlist = Commander banlist

Idea behind the format: basically a variant of commander but widening the spectrum a bit and allowing any spell to be the centerpiece of the decks. Constructive criticism welcome and the banlist is likely gonna increase when some spells end up being problematic

Isn't this basically the same as the Sorcerer format?

It could seem to look like the sorcerer format and I can see why that's been said however sorcerer is limiting you primarily to non-creature spells, whereas I never specified the library had any limit on number of creatures. Nor did I say that the mastery spell had to be non-creature either. You could effectively use the mastery slot as a placeholder for a spell you feel you must use, like just now I realised tutors could easily be put into that slot, but that's what the - can't use till turn 3 minimum is there for

I mean... mono black with Dark Petition as the commander seems kinda broken...

Ban any card that nets you two plus mana when cast. Seething Song is a t3 infinite combo with say Grapeshot.

Boza, Seething Song isn't turn 3 infinite combo. on third cast it already costs more mana than it produces.

Sounds fun format. It seems like there's some really interesting decks in format. So many interesting options. Hypergenesis with Shardless Agent or Violent Outburst. Mono-black has many powerful options: Yawgmoth's Will, Demonic Tutor and Ad Nauseam. Mono-blue turns with Sage of Hours or Capture of Jingzhou. Elves with Natural Order or Glimpse of Nature. I think Lim-Dul's Vault also has some potential.
