Hey all,

I'm leaving again for college tomorrow and I'm considering getting into MTGO. My friends and I are GP grinding in 2015 so I want to play as much modern as possible this year,

  • How does the singles market operate on mtgo?

  • do people trade digital cards for real cards?

I have a fairly extensive paper modern collection. But I am not very excited about spending 700 dollars to recreate my birthing pod deck online.

Money issues aside,

  • is the modern action online pretty interesting?

  • can you play at any time of the day?

Thanks to anyone who bothers reading all of that, and hopefully has some advice for an mtgo newbie!

I don't personally play MODO but I know some people abd have some experience so I'll attempt to answer your questions.

  1. The singles market operates very similiarly on MTGO with people opening packs and then trading/selling them. On MTGO "stores" are bots who will will have a collection and can hold credit for you. Not all are trustworthy so make sure they are from a reputable site. People don't crack packs on MTGO instead they draft with them. Drafting is the way most packs get opened.

  2. Some people do, some don't. You have to talk to specific people and figure it out.

  3. Modern is a very popular format on MTGO. The online metagame is a bit different from the paper, more Tempo decks, Delver/RUG Twin and less burn and RDW.

  4. Yep. As long as it isn't broken you can.

Some useful sites:

Online card Store

Metagame and Rough online prices

Use sites like mtgotraders.com for singles. the prices for most mtgo singles are less than irl. I strictly play modern on mtgo so I think I can help you out here. You can get a game of modern anytime you feel like on modo, there is a tournament practice room and you can play in this room for free. There are matches going on there at all times of the day. Besides that, people play in modern dailies and modern premiere events. these events cost 6 tickets, which is equal to 6 dollars. You win packs for placing, and can sell these packs for more tickets or open them for the cards. Dailies run 4 times a day I think, so you can find time for those most of the time. They are 4 match tournaments with a max of 64 players I think.

The investment in mtgo may seem big at first, but it is totally worth it. It's great fun, you can get matches anytime, and the level of the players is top notch.

I hope you decide to invest in mtgo and wish you good luck when doing so :)
