EDH banned cards help

Online Magic forum

So, I mostly play 1v1 commander on MTGO and with Sol Ring and Mana Crypt being banned on MTGO... I am at a loss as to what I should replace them with. Being that these are cards that are usually in every EDH deck and they are not banned in paper... it gets really irritating. I am looking for staple cards for replacing them... I'd rather not get into each of my deck lists. lol.

Help... please.

If you are playing 1v1 Commander then they technically are banned in paper. You're playing a different form of EDH. Duel Commander (or French Commander) which uses a different ban list than the traditional multiplayer FFA EDH. As for suggestions, I would be no help.

Thought I'd just point out the difference if you were unaware.

Thank you for the info.

Unfortunately, nothing else in the format can give you the same boost out of the gate that Sol Ring and Mana Crypt can for the cost. The closest colorless option that isn't banned is Worn Powerstone, but that probably isn't what you're looking to do in most of your decks.

I know you said you didn't want to retool all of your lists, but if you no longer have access to colorless fast mana then that's likely what you're going to have to do.

Or start playing multiplayer EDH ;).

I've found Pyramid of the Pantheon not a wholly unreasonable replacement, if you want that slot to absolutely be a mana rock. Its slow to turn on but it can still provide some degree of early advantage.

Alternatively, use the slot for more power/value rather than mama rocks.

You can play 1 vs 1 using regular commander rules. Dual commander is actually a different set of rules/deck construction.

Mtgo has made it so both are under one umbrella, and made their own ban list for the new combined format - ie they can get more $ if they control the list and both formats share same ban list. This is an idea made from a more profit perspective, instead of what is healthy for each format. So you can't make most edh decks on mtgo, unless you overhaul the mana base.

pskinn01 - That's some serious crap right there. I didn't know about that. I use XMage.

For the record, they've just updated such that "Commander" will now use the multiplayer banlist of the Rules Committee and be Multiplayer only, and "Commander 1v1" will be 1v1 only and use their 1v1-oriented banlist.

It's still dumb, but now people who want to use their paper decks online can return to doing so.

TMBRLZ I've just downloaded xmage, is there a 1 vs 1 option with the normal commander banlist?

Since we're on the subject here, does xmage have the full card-pool available? As in every card in Magic? And how does it compare to Cockatrice?

Basically Xmage is Cockatrice with rules enforcement. It's more like a mtgo than anything else I've seen.

You could just make a commander FFA and restrict it to two players @Winterblast

And XMage has about 90-95% in its pool. There were only a few cards I ever came across that weren't yet loaded. One was Thrumming Stone. I put in a suggestion and it showed up a few months later.

So every card that matters will be there.
