Why is Eidolon of the Great Revel in modern burn?

Modern forum

It says PLAYER not OPPONENT. Every card in a burn deck is cmc 3 or less.... so why punish yourself with a playset for S27, 2 mana and a spot in your deck? This card probably locked some people out of playing spells. Explain why this sees play in modern burn and Young Pyromancer doesnt as much.

Because Modern Burn doesn't care about its life total; it only cares about its opponents' life totals.

In Modern, most spells are 3CMC or less - Eidolon of the Great Revel can therefore do a lot of damage to an opponent - it also means that if your opponent counters your burn, they're probably taking damage to the face regardless.

It's a race. One you intend to win.

Sure, you take 2 when you cast a burn spell, but it's a spell ideally dealing them 3. Plus you get a blocker to prevent them attacking through to you. You get a red permanent to convoke Stoke the Flames (which will deal 4 and NOT burn you), and you make it so they'll do a bunch of damage to themselves.

When somebody's line of play wants to be Land/Elvish Mystic, Land Elvish Mystic/Sylvan Caryatid, the idea that you could have had that already deal them 4-6 damage to play things they aren't even planning to attack with? And then you've swung for 2 into their 1/1 mystic which they didn't block, and burned them for 4 or 6, and they're already at 6 or 8 life before they can try to play their big thing? It's not shabby at all.

ditto for so many kinds of deck.

Devonin this is for Modern burn, where you won't see many of those cards - maybe Caryatid - but at the same time you're punishing counter spells, removal, Birds, Goyfs, Lilis, Exarchs...

If you win at one life, you've still won.

Every Lightning Bolt might do 2 damage to you - but it does 3 to them. Equally any card they play to threaten you such as Scavenging Ooze makes things worse by ALSO hurting them. Therefore, whilst you take damage from your own Eidolon of the Great Revel you dish out more than you take.

Having to play against it multiple times I'd vouch for what's said. The card is absolutely crippling in modern because to do anything you basically shock yourself and he demands you remove him ASAP.

Ya this card is insane in burn. The only lines of play that I would take instead of this on turn two is swiftspear into another burn spell, as that deal 5-7 damage that turn. I would then drop this turn 3 maybe after playing a lava spike or somthing. The opponent is then often at like 10 life and I am at 20. If you lose the race because of taking damage from Eidolon you were not going to win the game in the first place.

i love Eidolon, the life you lost is nothing to win the game.

look it this way, if you against jund/junk, normally they will do, fetch, shock, thoughtseize, there, they start in 15 lifes.

Then you put your Eidolon in play, they MUST spend a removal in it, and it will cost 2 life , if not, they couldn't play anyhting else if they dont get hurt, and you just keep burning him/attacking him.

Young piromancer in ohter hand, dis to removal, and you have to spend resources to make him useful.

The eidolon just came in play and you have "deal with it"

DemonZer0: you're right, but I think it's worth mentioning that if you get Thoughtseize'd on turn 1 with an Eidolon in hand, there's a 500% chance it'll be the card they take away from you. Which is another proof of how freaking good the card is.

See Legacy Burn, where Flame Rift is a staple. Yes the card deals 4 damage to us but the point is it is 4 damage for 2. 4 damage for 2 is also why RW/x Burn has become the most popular type of burn, Boros Charm. The guy will always see 2-6 damage, and only 2 if he forces removal. He is a staple for sure. Young Pyromancer on the otherhand is relatively slow and can have 0 impact on the game.

You ever get two Eidolons out? Bolts deal 3 to them and 4 to you. It's fucking awesome.

In several matchups, with 2 eidolons on the board you can just wait for your opponent to concede.

You are storm? Sweet

You are infect? You simply don't care about my life total, why should I? 80% of what you'll cast is also a pair of shocks, You also need to go through the combat phase to do something decent, which is unlikely.

Affinity? Yup, you drop fatties, but in order to do this you MUST drop a lot of cmc0-1, you can find a way around, but you'll buy me time doing this.

It also make lifegain less efficent against burn. And after all: A good card is better if it's also a 2/2 creature, and this one is a Pyrostatic Pillar (which is good) with legs (which is super good).

I see lot of plays also in legacy. It's is my burn list for both modern(4x) and legacy(3x main + 1x sb)

If you have two dropped you can just start swinging with it too. They either let it through and it deals 2, or they block it and kill it. Then you let loose with the burn you have accumulated while the board was stalled.

Yes, Shill, I wanted to say something like that, too much enthusiasm for the card, I assume... Sorry :P

haha at the 500% chance of gettng Thoughtseized. So true unless they have M.Bison in hand also. Swifty is the bigger threat IMO.

Damnation & Treetop Village love to deal with Eidolon of the Great Revel ...honestly though I'll AD, Pulse, -2 that bitch on sight. Don't care about the life loss.

Eidolon is like bob in that the longer it stays in play, the more damage it will do. However, unlike bob, eidolon has an effect the moment it resolves, meaning that even bolting it still deals damage one way or another.

At its worst, eidolon is a Duress that also deals 2 damage to your opponent. At its best, eidolon will likely end up making your opponent feel something like this.

March 2, 2015 2:52 a.m.

As mentioned, in an absolute worst case scenario once this thing hits play, it does 2 damage and baits a killspell.

I play against elves a lot at locals. Dropping an eidolon turn 2 and watching them squirm is just delicious.
