What's your opinion of Kytheon/Gideon

Modern forum

i was thinking of trying him in an affinity shell flip turn 2 and combined with Steel Overseer you got a nice little synergy that also pseudo protects your Lord

I'm wanting to try him out in death and taxes. The one drop slot in that deck is a flex slot, and a one drop that has the potential to be a 4/4 indestructible beater seems pretty good.

I think he'll be fine in standard, t1 kytheon t2 double Monastery Swiftspear/dash Lightning Berserker to flip him is a strong play. I don't think he's going to make any mentionable impact beyond that though.

What format of death and taxes are you talking about? D&T isn't really a thing in modern bc there's no good mana denial and legacy D&T your 1 drop is Mother of Runes & AEther Vial or you're just flat out doing it wrong.

This is the modern section of the forum right? Or did I post in the wrong section again?

d&t is a thing in modern. it's a variation of hatebears that plays vials, flickerwisps, usually blade splicers and other mildly annoying Wx creatures to focus more on disruption. some builds play Akroma, Angel of Fury as a cute monster to flip with flickerwisp/resto angel. i personally play 2 mangara in the board as a catch-all o-ring type answer that has synergy with flickering. it's not as obviously tier 1 as the legacy version, but with some tuning it has done well in the few tournaments i've played with it.here's my build as an example

with all that said, i could see gideon more in a hatebear build than d&t. hatebears are more about getting big things down faster and slightly disrupting their opponent (like brimaz or loxodon smiter) whereas d&t i think would prefer vial, mana dorks, or disruptive stuff like Dryad Militant or Judge's Familiar.

also, to the OP, would affinity need to adjust their manabase to play this? do they play enough white sources as is? i could see playing a reactive spell like Dispatch off of mox opals and glimmervoids, but dropping this t1 might be more difficult. it also doesn't have evasion like most of the other threats in the deck, or help turn on metalcraft. those are the negatives i see, and i'm not sure they outweigh the positives of being a 2 power 1-drop that maybe turns into a 4/4 indestructible beater on offense.

4 Glimmervoid 4 Mox Opal 4 Springleaf Drum some drop inkmoths in favour of Mana Confluence or pain lands and while you could use him as a stick to hit your opponent you can also use him to say "Tarmogoyf gtf out my way"

Well, K/Gideon is the most playable out of all. However, I do not think there is a home for him. Affinity does not any more non-artifact weenies. He does not hate enough (or tbh, at all) to be in hate bears. I could see him as a solid 1 drop in zoo though.

BTW, SCG preorders for this guy are at 25 bucks. Magic finance is out of whack these days...

I don't see why $25 is so ridiculous. Planeswalkers that were just spoiled are always overpriced. See Narset Transcendent, or Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker.

Affinity is taking it a little deep.

  • It isn't an artifact, so it doesn't fuel any of the rest of the deck. The whole reason to play affinity is for stuff like fast mana and to break cards like Cranial Plating.
  • It doesn't carry a Cranial Plating well, since you both need to keep reequipping it and it doesn't have evasion. Steel Overseer and Memnite get a pass, but there's a reason affinity plays so many flyers.
  • Doesn't really synergize with other deck aspects. Affinity doesn't need to clear blockers since most of their guys fly or have another evasion, and other than untapping Steel Overseer everything else is just a blocker.

You're welcome to try it, but I straight up think it makes the deck worse, unless you really overhaul the deck to be more a Tempered Steel deck - and even then I'm not sure that's better than just normal affinity.

Yea, the $25 tag won't hold for long. 10-15 I'm guessing is more likely.

Also, the mtg finance world has no control over what vendors charge presale. There will always be the Jace tax on walkers, vendors don't want to get burnt for under pricing a walker in case they're nuts. Just wait, unless one of them finds an auto3-4 of in a deck they're probably going to get cheaper.

I don't see Gideon in Modern. Craig Wescoe thinks that Gideon could see play in BW Tokens, but I feel like Gideon is meant for White Weenie. And WW isn't a great deck in Modern, with Death & Taxes being the closest in theme. I'd gladly eat my hat should Gideon become huge in Modern, but I just don't see it.

Kytheon/Gideon will make his way into Soul Sisters lists, but not the good ones. He doesn't do enough for the deck to be better than another Soul Warden.

Why no mention of Naya Zoo yet? Do you guys think he isn't good enough to be side by side with Wild Nacatl, Kird Ape, and Loam Lion?

I really don't see any of these Walkers in Modern. Especially Gideon. They simply don't do enough. They're cheap, but ineffective in Modern. Gideon is no exception.
