What to play at upcoming PPTQ'S

Modern forum

I'm going to be heading to a PPTQ in Minneapolis this weekend, and a few others in the future, but can't decide on what to play.

These are my two choices:

Sacrifice to the Moon!

Both have their advantages, just not sure how they are on this meta/Minneapolis meta.

Thanks in advance!

I found there were a lot of fair decks at the last big Modern event I attended, so I'd go with Goblins personally. The ability to go under/wide of Delver and B/G/X decks seems important. They're pretty close though.

Do like the goblins I'd run it.

The more aggressive the deck is the better itll shake out in tournaments I would imagine. Just gotta hope they arent packing any really good board wipes like Pyroclasm in their sideboard xD

Thanks guys!

Is it more that Blue Moon is bad now, or is it the fact of aggro decks being easier in the mind/a better choice against smaller metas? I'm more than adept with both decks, so it doesn't matter either way. Kinda hoping to play control, but can understand Goblins being a better choice.

If you feel like you want to play control, then by all means go for it. I think it may be a little slow, but there shouldn't be too much difference. Play what you love, but I think that the aggro deck is better in the meta if you want results.

Definitely the Gobbos. They've been doing decently of late. I like the concept of Blue Moon, but decks that are slow and relying on Red removal spells are pretty poorly positioned right now, thanks to Shadow and Eldrazi Tron.

Gobs. Moon is too slow and Lightning Bolt is bad right now. Shivers Never thought I'd say that.

I will probably go with Goblins then! Thanks everyone! Does the list seem fine?

Just an aside, @rothgar13 and @filthyc4sual, not quite as bad as you think. At least for Blue Moon, I'm currently 10-0 against Death's Shadow and 2-0 against Eldrazi Tron (not much E-Tron near me). I've found Bolt to be good now, but then again that's my personal meta. Also, previously I've been using Cryptic Serpent as a finisher with Thought Scour, and it's been good. I am also of the opinion Bolt is still good, but again, personal experience.

As Dredge4Life said, if you prefer Blue Moon, go for it! This is just me personally. (Then again, me personally would go with Elves in every meta. I might not be the best person to ask.)

Well, as it is obvious I have a clear bias, thanks everyone for the help, I will hopefully choose something by the PPTQ, or maybe learn from my mistakes from this one. Who knows!

As for the lists themselves, particularily the Goblins list, does it seem fine to you all?

In the goblins list, I would replace Bomat Courier and Pyretic Ritual with Krenko's Command and Dragon Fodder. I don't really know much about Blue Moon, but I would try to add the fourth moon and increase consistency a little. Maybe cut the 2 Spell Snare for more Mana Leak.

@filthyc4sual not as good as you might think. It would add too many two drops. You want as many one drops to power up the Whackers. Bomat adds card advantage, which is sorely needed, and Pyretic adds mana acceleration, which is also needed to power stuff out. Though I might want Simian Spirit Guide instead.

Simian Spirit Guide is about a billion times better than Pyretic Ritual. Looking at your list again, why no Aether Vial?

@ filthyc4sual I'll have to try it. Might pick up a playset soon. I do agree, it is better, but Pyretic is on hand, and triggers Reckless, so it has some merit.

And it's terrible in modern Goblins. The advantage it gains is through a longer game. Goblins wants to be aggro, and taking a turn off to play it slows you down too much (not to mention doesn't trigger the Whackers). It does have it's own sub-archetype though.

It's the best card in goblins. It more than makes up for taking turn 1 off by casting extra spells on every turn after that. You can't get mana screwed with vial in play.

SoggyGecko says... #17

That's for Legacy. Goblins want to win by turn 3-5, which is when Aether Vial finally starts to help. I'd rather have mana acceleration. Also, lists are decently tight, so it's hard to fit it in. It seems good, but in actuality it's not that great, from experience.

August 16, 2017 12:46 a.m.

Goblins is very consistent, and you'd be surprised how well generic aggro decks can do against 'meta' midrange decks. Just try to dodge the UW control, Sun & Moon, and Living End matchups and you'll be fine :)

Vial doesn't belong in Modern Goblins. This is a go-wide hyper-aggro deck, not the "infinite font of card advantage" engine deck Legacy Goblins is. Vial is at its best when it lets you cheat on significant amounts of mana, which is really not a relevant concern in a Goblin deck that curves out at 3. It also benefits greatly from having ways to generate card advantage, and Modern Goblins have none of those.

Looks like the consensus is Goblins! I will have to go for it. Might make a few changes (Vexing Devil seems good, for once). Might add Claim / Fame, and make it R/b, but we will see.
