What deck do you really wanna play but your wallet says no?

Modern forum

As a unemployed 19 year old I have a hard time getting money therefore getting cards is hard. The reason why I am posting this here by the way is because I wanna play modern and well I have a modern deck but not the deck I REALLY wanna play. If this should be moved I am sorry Epochalyptik So the modern deck I would love to play is actually 4 color burn R/W/U/G (or black instead of green) So what decks do you wanna play in modern but cant because of limited money? is there something that is really holding you back? for me its lands Shock and Fetches are pretty pricey lol and I need em for a 4 color deck.

Cruel Control for sure. It's such an expensive deck for a tier 2, possible worse archtype, but nothing is more fun that using Cruel Ultimatum in a deck.

I am, however, slowly collecting the Snapcasters and Cryptics required for the deck. All in due time.

I'd play UWR Control, or B/G/x, because I just love the strategies of those sort of things.

I absolutely love the playstyle of control, and want to become better at it, but that's really hard without practicing with it.

Attrition is probably the 'best' playstyle for me, but it's insanely expensive, often costing more than legacy.

Probably some legacy deck including a playset of Chains of Mephistopheles . Such a cool fucking card.

Right now I am playing Cruel Control because I happened to have most of the cards. Plus I love Cruel Ultimatum . But I would love to play Dredgevine in modern.

Jund.

Probably a decent 5 colour commander deck. Because you know, all 10 ABUR duals, 10 shocklands, 10 fetchlands, access to all the black tutors, Survival of the Fittest etc.

October 29, 2014 7:42 a.m.

Haha, damn Chief! Need some deep pockets for that mana base.

BUG or RUG Delver. I absolutely love Delver Tempo based strategies, but beyond U/R It's a bit out of my price range. Especially once you start adding up Tarmogoyf s, fetch lands, Abrupt Decay s...

To answer the question asked in the OP, I would love to foil out a Rock deck. Foil lilianas, daym.

To answer the question that everyone else in this thread seems to have thought was asked, I would buy RUG Delver for EDH, and foil out my Maelstrom Wanderer deck for EDH (Also adding in all necessary duals and fetches).

October 29, 2014 8:23 a.m.

Well MUD in vintage, RUG in legacy and Jund in modern is all decks I want but can't afford.

I'm another fan of the Rock. I'm not really interested in spending 500+ dollars in a deck though and it's well into that 2k range

My wallet says no to splinter twin I like goofy decks... But it's also because I have fish and 8rack built. (The latter was a no from my wallet but I did it anyways. Hahahaha)

I would like to play ascendancy until its banned, but fetches and Noble Hierarch make it impossible for my paycheck. I'm currently working on burn and hatebears decks, but it is hard to get fetches and Goblin Guide s to make burn viable and the Aether Vials and various swords for hatebears.

October 29, 2014 11:03 a.m.

I build $200 decks out of necessity of budget. So much so I'm not sure what I would do with a big budget. I guess I would like to build a viable Dragon deck. Brimaz is pretty cool. Rabblemaster is a card I'd like to try out.

4 color burn in modern isn't expensive at all. 4 color aggro is worth my tuition. Since fetchlands were just reprinted, the only expensive card for a burn deck right now is Goblin Guide . You could build a legitimate 4 or 3 color burn deck for less than $200 right now. Here's the one I run with great success: CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O

Sorry, this is the one, that's the old deck: Rakdos Burn

5 color burn isn't even expensive by modern standards. It is around $400, but still.

Unless you add Tarmogoyf .

October 30, 2014 1:14 a.m.

vishnarg says... #31

@Femme_Fatale, exactly. Good burn decks go from around $150 to $400, whereas when you start adding Tarmogoyf , it becomes an aggro deck, and your wallet will never recover.

As I stated Unemployed so getting fetches and shocks for a kinda color specific deck can be pretty tasking. I understand it isnt "expensive" by most modern players budgets but for me it is lol

October 30, 2014 9:07 a.m.

vishnarg says... #33

If you can't make 4 color burn, make a mono RDW. Still a really good deck, and only about $150 if you do it right.

October 30, 2014 9:21 a.m.

derKochXXL says... #34

There might be times when 150$ is expensive for a person...

October 30, 2014 11:10 a.m.

JRaynor says... #35

If you don't have $150 to spend on magic then you shouldn't bother with competitive play. Stick to the kitchen table. There's no shame in that.

October 30, 2014 1:41 p.m.

vishnarg says... #36

@derKochXXL If that's the case and you still want to play competitively, you would need to trade your way to building the deck. If you don't have a good card collection or that much cash, modern is not for you.

October 30, 2014 2:18 p.m.

derKochXXL says... #37

Guys, I was just stating what deck I wanted to build, that my wallet doesn't allow at the time. I do own a perfectly fine modern deck, but Burn is the next thing I wanna build, and I am at the moment trading for it. I just answered the question to my best knowledge and stated that at the time I can't spend the money to build the deck instantly, which would be the dream. Does that make sense?

I am working on a Rg Land D deck. Needs playsets of Blood Moon (not TOO bad) and Fulminator Mage (ouch). Runs ok without them, but with them almost assures a turn two land nuke. One day...
