What cards in Journey to Nyx have good Modern potential?

Just curious as to what everyone's thoughts are on this set's cards that have Modern potential and what sort of decks they contribute to...

Athreos, God of Passage I think can see play in many decks. I don't know if we will see him in tier 1 decks though.

i'd think that eidolon of great revel (wouldnt let me link the card) would have some modern potential, except it works as a double edged sword against yourself

bolting everytime opponents cast small spells is always nice

Maybe Eidolon of Blossoms will finally allow modern to support an enchantress deck?

zandl says... #6

Meh. Modern already has City of Brass , which is essentially Mana Confluence . And most Modern decks don't use City of Brass .

Maybe Scryfish (Sigiled Starfish )? May be a stretch, but Scry 1 for free each turn that can block 2/X's seems good.

Maybe Worst Fears in that Primeval Titan / Amulet of Vigor deck? But probably not. At that point, they could just kill you instead of screwing with you.

Honestly, there's not much for the eternal formats in Journey. It's largely a Standard-support set, which Standard will greatly appreciate.

Wrong card. I meant Eidolon of the Great Revel

zandl says... #9

Oh. Yeah.

That card's pretty good, though I'd expect to so it more sideboard than anything.

April 18, 2014 3:32 p.m.

Aegis of the Gods kicks major ass and will probably be either side board or main board in some decks I'd wager. Even though its a shameless lightning rod

April 18, 2014 3:35 p.m.

zandl says... #11

@AnagonLordofSnakes: Not really. If nobody's playing True Believer in Modern, then nobody's going to play Aegis of the Gods .

If you need to protect yourself, Leyline of Sanctity is really the only option.

Athreos, God of Passage I think would be a nice addition to W/B midrange lists

APPLE01DOJ says... #13

Eidolon of the Great Revel I agree upon.

Athreos, God of Passage I'm not so sure. Unless Sisters or Knights splash for it. I can't possible imagine W/B tokens, the deck thats set up for it really needing it considering their creature base is tokens. Not to mention, 7 devotion is asking ALOT in modern.

If it was G/W it would fit in nicely with Haterbears

April 18, 2014 4:02 p.m.

I'd argue that the new card is much better than True Believer since hexproof>shroud always. We'll see if people run it or not. But as mentioned atheros is easily going into a deck.

Triton Shorestalker seems like an almost no-brainer for a fish deck.

@APPLE01DOJ that is true, 7 is a lot for modern lol

I could see Athreos, God of Passage as a 1 of in Melira Pod, and before you ask, no it doesnt stop the combo, its your trigger and you stack it.

Arvail says... #18

I don't see Aegis of the Gods becoming a big thing but having a casting cost of 1CW instead of WW makes him much easier to play than True Believer .

April 18, 2014 6:33 p.m.

Blakkhand says... #19

Atheros seems pretty overhyped to me. Sure, its a nice value card, but the value is pretty small and it's controlled by your opponent.

Athreos is NOT good in Pod. It's very rarely going to be active, it doesn't directly interact with the board, you can't pod out of it, it's a dead draw when you have an empty board and you just don't have the mana to spend on recasting creatures, when you already have so much to spend it on (townships, pod and largish creatures). As a pod player, I can assure you that I am certainly not taking out a finks for one.

An article on CFB actually mentioned that Ajani might have a home in the sideboards of Pod, as it's a reliable source of advantage against the more grindy matchups, like control. It's probably a bit debatable whether it's better than lark or thrun, but I can certainly envision it being a possibility in the future. I'm probably going to wait on getting any for the time being though.

April 18, 2014 6:41 p.m.

Eidolon of the Great Revel is like Pyrostatic Pillar on a stick. If Modern ever has a Storm deck, it's great sideboard tech.

April 18, 2014 7:35 p.m.

sylvannos says... #22

Bassara Tower Archer could potentially find a home in Bogle, but I doubt it since they don't even play Silhana Ledgewalker most of the time.

Reprisal has been reprinted, which is nice since it hasn't been printed for Modern yet. It'll be a healthy sideboard option for white decks.

Eidolon of Rhetoric isn't bad. The extra toughness over Ethersworn Canonist is relevant in a format with Lightning Bolt . However, that extra mana is the difference from stopping a Storm player from comboing off.

Mana Confluence won't be seeing any play except for budget/low-tier builds. Modern's mana fixing is convenient enough that it doesn't need the ping every turn.

Eidolon of the Great Revel could see play. At the very least I assume it will be sideboard against storm and mainboard in proper burn.

Aegis of the Gods I can safely say will not see play. The amount of archtypes it helps to counter are limited, and it's exposed to both creature removal and burn, unlike Leyline of Sanctity , which is only hit by enchantment removal and can possibly come in free.

I'm glad they're reprinting Reprisal . I knew they would do it in Theros block, and Journey into Nyx was the last chance to prove myself right. It will most likely see modern play, I'd say. Not much reason not to.

sylvannos says... #24

I think Mana Confluence could see some fringe play. Part of the reason you don't see City of Brass is because it doesn't work with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and other land changers. That fringe play is still fringe beyond fringe, but the odd Mana Confluence will show up more than City of Brass currently does. For example, this Affinity deck ran a singleton City of Brass and this burn deck ran a full playset (granted, that was before Deathrite Shaman was banned, so an updated list probably wouldn't play four colors).

It's still not as good as the Ice Age and Apocalypse pain lands in Modern, though. I think most three color decks will play those cycles before they even think about Mana Confluence .

zandl Mana Confluence is actually better then City of Brass . If some other effect would tap City of Brass you would still lose life. I for 1 plan on running it in modern but I am going to wait until it costs less then 20$. Like you said most of the time City of Brass and Gemstone Mine will work just fine.

April 20, 2014 6:51 p.m.

sylvannos says... #27

@ninjaking92: I'm going to be amazed if it stays above $8.

April 21, 2014 4:55 a.m.

KrosanTusker says... #28

ninjaking92 City of Brass is better. The 1 damage is a triggered ability so you can respond to it, eg.

Tap City of Brass for red mana. Damage trigger goes on stack.
With the trigger on the stack, cast Lightning Bolt to the opponents face.
Opponent loses as a state-based action for having less than 0 life (presuming they do).
You win, taking no damage from City of Brass .

I reckon this comes up a lot more than other effects tapping your lands.

April 21, 2014 5:53 a.m.

Sov92 says... #29

@sylvannos I think its gonna sit at 10 for quite some time honestly.

April 21, 2014 9:01 a.m.

sylvannos says... #30

@ninjaking92: I could see that if it picks up in Standard. It definitely opens up more 3 color decks. At the same time, shocks are still better and are sitting around $10 on average. The number of decks that can use four Mana Confluence on top of shocks and scry lands is rather narrow. But this is a small set, the last in the block, so that could keep its price above $10.

@KrosanTusker: lol no. That's a really narrow situation and one far less likely to come up than the interactions with Chromatic Lantern , Tamiyo, the Moon Sage , Pestermite , Deceiver Exarch , Mistbind Clique , Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth , etc. Even in that situation you named, that's still only preventing one damage (the one point where the game would end), whereas the other situations will often prevent more damage had you used Mana Confluence .

City of Brass using the stack is a point to consider, though. It is also possible to prevent the damage, which can't be done with Mana Confluence . Then again...

City of Brass works in a deck based around Platinum Emperion while mana confluence works nicely in aggro and lifegain decks

The new city of brass is better than actual City of Brass so it will probably see play over it maybe
